Download or read book Leicestershire and Rutland written by Nikolaus Pevsner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1985-03-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pevsner wrote that "Leicestershire is not a county of extremes" and agreed that "no other county in England surpasses Rutland for unspoiled quiet charm". The large and the small Midland counties possess a varied and rewarding range of buildings. Church architecture encompasses the classical Normanton, preserved in remote isolation from the flood of Rutland Water, to Market Harborough with its elegant medieval steeple, and a fine group of Victorian churches in Leicester. The major country houses include Belvoir Castle, Staunton Harold and Burley-on-the-Hill, while the more modest homes of the late nineteenth century include notable work by Ernest Gimson, Voysey and a garden city at Leicester by Parker & Unwin. Leicestershire also possesses fine modern buildings, from its architecturally progressive schools to the justly renowned buildings of Leicester University, dominated by Stirling & Gowan's Engineering Building.

The route includes many highlights of Leicestershire, Charnwood Forest, Bradgate Park, Burrough Hill Iron Age Fort, Foxton Locks, Burbage Common and Bosworth Battlefield Centre. It visits pretty villages, varied countryside and passes through a part of the National Forest. The guide offers a detailed description of the route alongside maps taken from the popular Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 maps. Photographs and text invite you to points of interest along the way. The book is spiral bound for ease of use in a protective map case. The walk was originally devised by members of the Leicestershire Footpath Association (LFA) to mark the centenary of their organisation in 1987, one hundred miles to mark one hundred years. This 2017 guide is a complete update including minor alterations to the route. The Round is on the doorstep of a large urban population including Leicester, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough, Hinckley and Coalville. The section from Barwell to Frisby on the Wreake (40 miles) is especially easy to access by public transport. The route has always had the support of Leicestershire County Council and is well maintained by them with the installation of gates, yellow topped posts and ditch crossings. The route is shown as a Recreational Route on Ordnance Survey maps. Distinctive waymarking is now carried out by wardens, coordinated by the LFA

Download or read book Farming with the Environment written by Chris Stoate and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines, discusses and shares over 30 years’ worth of research from the Allerton Project, a research and demonstration farm in the UK which has been carrying out applied interdisciplinary research to explore and explain the need to adapt the management of farmland for environmental protection and to provide public benefits. Designed to provide guidance, feedback and recommendations to farmers, practitioners and policymakers, the Allerton Project is an exceptionally well-documented case study of lowland agricultural land management which has the purpose of meeting multiple objectives. This book draws on the wealth of knowledge built over the past 30 years and unveils and clarifies the complexity of a number of topical debates about current land and wildlife management at a range of spatial scales, explores the underlying historical context and provides some important pointers to future directions of travel. Topics include soil health and management, farmland ecology, development of management practices to enhance biodiversity, natural flood management, water quality and aquatic ecology. Most importantly, the book demonstrates how the findings from this project relate to agricultural and conservation policy more broadly as well as how they are applicable to similar projects throughout Europe. This book will be of great interest to professionals working in agricultural land management and conservation, as well as researchers and students of agri-environmental studies and agricultural policy.
