Book The Transformation of Urban Liberalism

Download or read book The Transformation of Urban Liberalism written by James Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Transformation of Urban Liberalism" re-evaluates the dramatic and turbulent political decade following the 'Third Reform Act', and questions whether the Liberal Party's political heartlands - the urban boroughs - really were in decline. In contrast to some recent studies, it does not see electoral reform, the Irish Home Rule crisis and the challenge of socialism as representing a fundamental threat to the integrity of the party. Instead this book illustrates, using parallel case studies, how the party gradually began to transform into a social democratic organisation through a re-evaluation of its role and policy direction. This process was not one directed from the centre - despite the important personalities of Gladstone and Rosebery - but rather one heavily influenced by 'grass roots politics'. Consequently, it suggests that late Victorian politics was more democratic and open than sometimes thought, with leading urban politicians forced to respond to the demands of party activists. Changes in the structure of urban rule produced new policy outcomes and brought new collectivist forms of New Liberalism onto the political agenda. Thus, it is argued that without the political transformations of the decade 1885-1895, the radical liberal governments of the Edwardian era would not have been possible.

Download or read book Rehabilitation Today written by S. Mattingly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIS book is based on a series of papers first published in Update during T 1974 and 1975. When they originally appeared they attracted attention from workers in many fields connected with rehabilitation, and it was clear that their appeal stretched far beyond the usual readership of Update. The papers present a unique collection of information on aspects of rehabilita tion, and their publication as a single volume has been requested by many. Since their original publication the papers have been revised. There have been many changes in the organisation of government and voluntary services, including, for example, changes in the law relating to the mobility allowance. These changes have been incorporated in the revision, and the book now presents an up-to-date account of the various aspects of rehabilitation including the services provided by government and voluntary organisations, relevant legislation, the provision of aids and appliances and problems affecting particular disability groups. If it is concerned principally with the physically disabled this is because they appear numerically to be the most important.

Book Understanding the Impacts of Deregulation in Planning

Download or read book Understanding the Impacts of Deregulation in Planning written by Ben Clifford and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In England, it has been possible since 2013 to convert an office building into residential use without needing planning permission (as has been required since 1948). This book explores the consequences of this central government driven deregulation on local communities. The policy decision was primarily about boosting the supply of housing, but reflects a broader neoliberal ideology which seeks to reform public planning in many countries to reduce perceived interference in free markets. Drawing on original research in the English local authorities of Camden, Croydon, Leeds, Leicester and Reading, the book provides a case study of the implementation of planning deregulation which demonstrates the lowering of standards in housing quality, the reduced ability of the local state to proactively steer development and plan for their places, and the transfer of wealth from the public to private spheres that has resulted. Comparative case studies from Glasgow and Rotterdam call into question the very need for the deregulation in the first place.
