Book The Ballad of the Wind the Devil and Lincoln Minster

Download or read book The Ballad of the Wind the Devil and Lincoln Minster written by Arnold Frost and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ballad of the Wind, the Devil and Lincoln Minster: A Lincolnshire Legend When the Minster was nearing its completion, the devil, who had narrowly and jealously watched the good bishop's proceedings, at once took up his position as over-lord, saying with a grim smile, as he looked over Lincoln, Ah! My good friend, all this is mine! One other matter connected with the legend, perhaps calls for some attention: the notorious attempt made by Oxford men to appropriate one more good thing from the City of Lincoln, namely, the cult of the Lincoln Imp. No doubt at Oxford, as in Lincoln, many undesirable personages are to be met with, but the University authorities themselves would hasten to declare that if perchance but one imp should be found within the walls of Lincoln College, he must have been a contraband importation, and was not indigenous to Oxford. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln the Freethinker In order to be a Christian it is necessary to believe the Bible to be a divinely inspired book. To be a Freethinker it is essential that you reject the Bible as a revelation from God. To determine, then, whether a person is a Christian or a Freethinker should indeed be very simple. A person may believe in God and yet reject the Bible as a divine book. Such a person; cannot be a Christian believer, but may be a Freethinker. A person may believe in the Bible, and according to his particular interpretation be any one of the following divisional sects of Christianity: Catholic, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist. Episcopalian, Congregationalist, Seventh Day Adventist, Holy Roller or Holy Jumper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Blood Libel Legend

Download or read book The Blood Libel Legend written by Alan Dundes and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1991-10-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Dundes, in this casebook of an anti-Semitic legend, demonstrates the power of folklore to influence thought and history. According to the blood libel legend, Jews murdered Christian infants to obtain blood to make matzah. Dundes has gathered here the work of leading scholars who examine the varied sources and elaborations of the legend. Collectively, their essays constitute a forceful statement against this false accusation. The legend is traced from the murder of William of Norwich in 1144, one of the first reported cases of ritualized murder attributed to Jews, through nineteenth-century Egyptian reports, Spanish examples, Catholic periodicals, modern English instances, and twentieth-century American cases. The essays deal not only with historical cases and surveys of blood libel in different locales, but also with literary renditions of the legend, including the ballad “Sir Hugh, or, the Jew’s Daughter” and Chaucer’s “The Prioress’s Tale.” These case studies provide a comprehensive view of the complex nature of the blood libel legend. The concluding section of the volume includes an analysis of the legend that focuses on Christian misunderstanding of the Jewish feast of Purim and the child abuse component of the legend and that attempts to bring psychoanalytic theory to bear on the content of the blood libel legend. The final essay by Alan Dundes takes a distinctly folkloristic approach, examining the legend as part of the belief system that Christians developed about Jews. This study of the blood libel legend will interest folklorists, scholars of Catholicism and Judaism, and many general readers, for it is both the literature and the history of anti-Semitism.

Book The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Burke McCarty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln In all the history of the political assassination plots by the enemies of freedom, which for cold cal culation, malicious methods, relentless pursuit, subtle cunning, and cowardly execution, nothing can exceed the cruel murder of this greatest of all Americans, for President Lincoln was the living, breathing type in which was fulfilled the triumph of the New Con cept of Popular Government, the central postulate of which is, the consent of the governed. It was the life of Abraham Lincoln which placed this form of government forever outside an experiment where its enemies persisted in endeavoring to keep it. That a barefoot, nameless boy on poverty's path could, by his own efforts, reach the highest office in the gift of the American people, gave the lie to the Divine Right croakers, and merited their most unceasing hatred. Barring the martyrdoms of Jesus Christ and Joan D' Arc, the methods used in Abraham Lincoln's assassination will stand pre-eminent in point of malice and cruelty, and strange as it may seem, the same diabolical cunning which nerved the hand of the assassin has pursued Lincoln beyond the grave, and has been largely successful in hiding from the public all details of his physical destruction, a crime, in the eyes of the writer, which almost outstrips the first, for by this conspiracy of silence on his death, the youth of America are being deprived of the knowl edge of the details of the greatest tragedy in their country's history. Download or read book Blood Libel written by Magda Teter and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark history of the antisemitic blood libel myth—how it took root in Europe, spread with the invention of the printing press, and persists today. Accusations that Jews ritually killed Christian children emerged in the mid-twelfth century, following the death of twelve-year-old William of Norwich, England, in 1144. Later, continental Europeans added a destructive twist: Jews murdered Christian children to use their blood. While charges that Jews poisoned wells and desecrated the communion host waned over the years, the blood libel survived. Initially blood libel stories were confined to monastic chronicles and local lore. But the development of the printing press in the mid-fifteenth century expanded the audience and crystallized the vocabulary, images, and “facts” of the blood libel, providing a lasting template for hate. Tales of Jews killing Christians—notably Simon of Trent, a toddler whose body was found under a Jewish house in 1475—were widely disseminated using the new technology. Following the paper trail across Europe, from England to Italy to Poland, Magda Teter shows how the blood libel was internalized and how Jews and Christians dealt with the repercussions. The pattern established in early modern Europe still plays out today. In 2014 the Anti-Defamation League appealed to Facebook to take down a page titled “Jewish Ritual Murder.” The following year white supremacists gathered in England to honor Little Hugh of Lincoln as a sacrificial victim of the Jews. Based on sources in eight countries and ten languages, Blood Libel captures the long shadow of a pernicious myth.
