Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Tales of the Harz Mountains It was during my first summer visit to the Harz Mountains that the idea occurred to me of making a collection of the most interesting of the legends of this charming district. This appeared to me all the more desirable, since no such collection peculiar to this mountain range exists in English. I wrote on the subject to the celebrated German author Gustav Freytag, unfolding my scheme, which he highly approved, and he very kindly rendered me valuable assistance by naming some of the books - and these were not a few - which it might be needful to study, and the libraries where they would be found. From a vast mass - up into the thousands - of Sagen, or legends and traditions, I chose the most interesting, giving them as I found them, when they were only pure translations. Some of the stories are, however, original, being founded on some legend. No mountainous district of Germany is, perhaps, so rich in legendary lore as this most northern chain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Huntsman: A Legend of the Hartz Hunter was long a blasting tradition to the poor who lived on the skirts of Windsor Forest. In the Ross of outer Scotland and the Hebrides, the simple herdsmen were often terrified by his hoarse-winded horn, the din of the wild race of deer and dogs, and the ghostly hoofs quick beating over the hollow, mist-wrapped hills. Everywhere in Germany the tale was told; from the bleak northern lowlands to the deepest re cesses of the Black Forest in the South, where he was a wandering and undying Jew, who de nied Christ a drink from a horse-trough, and bade him lap the water collected in a hoof print. These Stories are so captivating in their original form, that we almost regret, at first, that any attempt should be made to embellish them; and, indeed, nothing but the wit and cleverness of a Musaeus, or, on the other hand, the poetry and deep earnestness of a Tieck, could compensate for the loss of their simple beauty. However, we believe they may be relished in both ways and, without further preface, we commend the following specimens to the reader.same item.
