Book Legendary Locals of Saginaw

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Saginaw written by Roberta M. Morey and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saginaw's river system was important to settlement in the area. The Shiawassee, Tittabawassee, and Saginaw Rivers converge at a place called Green Point. It was here that Native Americans lived long before the first white man came. Louis Campau was the first permanent white settler. Later, Gen. Louis Cass arrived and was commissioned to negotiate a treaty with the Indians for the purpose of acquiring a large portion of their lands. Settlers began to arrive, along with trappers and fur traders, but the city did not begin to grow until men from the East found that a fortune could be made in lumbering white pine trees. Men such as Curtis Emerson, Norman Little, Jesse Hoyt, Wellington R. Burt, and Little Jake Seligman prospered because of the lumber boom. When lumbering waned, many of the lumber barons remained in Saginaw and established new businesses. Saginaw has legendary leaders and heroes in the areas of medicine, education, agriculture, business, and industry. Many are highlighted throughout the chapters of this book.

Book Legendary Locals of Bay City

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Bay City written by Ron Bloomfield and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who would have thought a city would one day stand where there was nothing but swamp, with long grass--where there was scarcely an opening in the woods, and in which the wolves made plenty of howling. This observation was made by Leon Trombley, one of the first to try to settle in this part of the Michigan "frontier" in the early 1800s. His nephews, Mader and Joseph, would soon follow and ultimately become noted among the area's first permanent residents. The residents of Bay City have always aspired to be legendary, whether by design, accident, or sheer determination. Annie Edson Taylor, the area schoolteacher turned daredevil who would ride her Bay City-built barrel over Niagara Falls (and survive!), is only one among a large group of local legends that includes Olympic champions, community leaders, artists, musicians, scholars, philosophers, and historians.

Book Michigan s Lumbertowns

Download or read book Michigan s Lumbertowns written by Jeremy W. Kilar and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan's foremost lumbertowns, flourishing urban industrial centers in the late 19th century, faced economic calamity with the depletion of timber supplies by the end of the century. Turning to their own resources and reflecting individual cultural identities, Saginaw, Bay City, and Muskegon developed dissimilar strategies to sustain their urban industrial status. This study is a comprehensive history of these lumbertowns from their inception as frontier settlements to their emergence as reshaped industrial centers. Primarily an examination of the role of the entrepreneur in urban economic development, Michigan Lumbertowns considers the extent to which the entrepreneurial approach was influenced by each city's cultural-ethnic construct and its social history. More than a narrative history, it is a study of violence, business, and social change.

Book Saginaw

Download or read book Saginaw written by Robert Jackson Douglas and published by . This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special town called Saginaw remade itself many times as it grew from hunting ground and trading post into a lumbering, agriculture and manufacturing center. This book is about a Saginaw family and a neighborhood as we lived through the depression, two big wars and the postwar periods. For most of that time money and "things" were scarce, but we had each other and so we managed to have great fun. Despite differences in ethnicity and backgrounds we were very patriotic - not just about our country, but about our schools, town and state. It was a time that will probably never come back: When few people felt the need to lock their doors and there was virtually no violent crime. This book is about that time.

Book Legendary Locals of Detroit Michigan

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Detroit Michigan written by Paul Vachon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detroit sports a very uneven background. The city dates from 1701, when Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac planted the flag of New France, some 75 years before America became a nation. Almost two-thirds of Detroit's history was spent as little more than a frontier military outpost--home to French farmers and fur traders who shared the quarters with the soldiers. But as the 20th century arrived, the impact of the automobile roused the city from its slumber. Within a century's time, the industry set in motion by Henry Ford produced a skyrocketing population, a diverse mosaic of ethnic groups, and levels of culture and affluence rivaled by few other places. The literature of Joyce Carol Oates, the architecture of Albert Kahn, and the music fostered by Berry Gordy enriched life and created the "Paris of the Midwest." But growing pains were inevitable: growing racial instability culminated in the insurrection of 1967, inflicting deep wounds yet creating new opportunities for harmony and justice that were capitalized on by Rev. William Cunningham. Today, efforts continue to remove the tarnish from this corner of the "Rust Belt."

Book Legendary Locals of St Joseph and Benton Harbor

Download or read book Legendary Locals of St Joseph and Benton Harbor written by Elaine Cotsirilos Thomopoulos PhD and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cast of characters tumbles out of the pages of this book, beginning with the courageous settlers who tamed the wilderness. By the 1890s, dynamic denizens of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor harvested fruit, established factories, and opened tourist attractions. Drake and Wallace's Silver Beach Amusement Park, with its roller coaster, fun house, and Lake Michigan beach, attracted visitors from Chicago. So did the curative mineral waters. Al Capone took "the baths," despite their stinking like rotten eggs. The Israelite House of David, a Christian sect founded by Benjamin and Mary Purnell, welcomed summer visitors to their amusement park. Despite an infamous scandal and trial involving Benjamin, the House of David thrived for decades. The cities spawned inventors like Augustus Herring, who flew an airplane five years before the Wright brothers; Emory Upton, who developed an electric-powered washing machine manufactured by a company now known as Whirlpool; and Walter Miller, inventor of a record-changing machine manufactured by V-M. By the 1980s, manufacturing in the area had declined, and the cities suffered. Present-day entrepreneurs, artists, and community activists have jump-started their return to vitality.

The organization was named the East Saginaw Club, and stock was sold at $100 a share. Bids were then submitted for property on which to build the clubhouse, and a site on Washington Avenue in downtown Saginaw was selected. In 1919, the original charter expired, the new articles of association were ratified, and a new name was chosen: the Saginaw Club. Book Saginaw s Changeable Past

Download or read book Saginaw s Changeable Past written by Jeremy W. Kilar and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword: Placement of the term "changeable" next to the word "historical" in this book's title may appear repetitive to the insightful reader. Indeed history is an ongoing process. Communities grow, populations vary, and economies rise and fall. History captures and interprets the change that goes on around us. Yet in Saginaw "change" is the password that opens the door to understanding the community's past. Few cities have undergone such extensive economic fluctuations, physical restructuring and demographic changes as Saginaw. The exploitation of "inexhaustible resources," first by the Indians, fur traders and later lumbermen marked earlier changes. This bounty did not last forever; after 30 years of transition something even better came along. By combining text, documents, remembrances, and quotations with a pictorial narrative one can look back at Saginaw's changeable past. New faces and new technologies will likely bring additional challenges, but by looking at the past Saginaw's citizens can be reassured that the accomplishments and adaptability of earlier generations has prepared the community well for the changeable future.
