Book FDI and the Investment Climate in the CIS Countries

Download or read book FDI and the Investment Climate in the CIS Countries written by Mr.Clinton R. Shiells and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of disappointing levels of inward foreign direct investment (FDI), this paper examines capital flows into the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and investigates the main impediments to a more favorable investment climate. Direct investment inflows have generally been related to natural resource extraction or energy transportation infrastructure projects, large privatization transactions, and debt/equity swaps to pay for energy supplies. Low FDI inflows despite strengthening macroeconomic performance has reflected a weak investment climate particularly owing to incomplete structural reforms. IMF staff working on the countries concerned cited burdensome tax systems, widespread corruption, extensive state intervention coupled with weak legal and regulatory frameworks, and incomplete structural reforms as the main impediments.

Book Contribution of the Law of the Commonwealth of Independent States to the Development of the CIS Member States

Download or read book Contribution of the Law of the Commonwealth of Independent States to the Development of the CIS Member States written by Tatiana Istomina and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Jura - Europarecht, Völkerrecht, Internationales Privatrecht, Note: 2,0, Universität Siegen (Public Law), Veranstaltung: European and German Law, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The new phase of development of the law of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS law) started in 2009, but remains currently unexplored. In general, most research papers have been written about the 1st and 2nd phases, and an insignificant number about the 3rd phase. The aim of the thesis is to show the contribution which was made and is still being made by the CIS law to the CIS member states’ development at 3 different phases of the existence of this organization, including the new 3rd phase. Moreover, this paper addresses key historical, political and economic factors, with primary emphasis on the analysis of the main legal sources of the CIS. By comparing 3 phases of development of the CIS law, its impact on the development of the CIS States in general is compared, according to the particular phase. The thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first part the first two phases are combined: first, the historical, economic and legal background is presented for the 1st Phase (2.1.) and for the 2nd Phase (2.2.). Next, the most important legal sources are addressed, and their analysis is conducted (2.3.), and conclusions for the impact of the CIS law on the CIS states are discussed (2.4.). Following this structure, a new phase is addressed in the second part: factors of the CIS law formation (3.1.), the analysis of the basic documents (3.2.) and conclusions about the contribution of the law in respect of the CIS states at the 3rd phase (3.3.). In the fourth part, the results concerning different phases are compared and conclusions are drawn, and additionally the prospects for further development are highlighted.

Book Reforming Infrastructure

Download or read book Reforming Infrastructure written by Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, railways, and water supply, are often vertically and horizontally integrated state monopolies. This results in weak services, especially in developing and transition economies, and for poor people. Common problems include low productivity, high costs, bad quality, insufficient revenue, and investment shortfalls. Many countries over the past two decades have restructured, privatized and regulated their infrastructure. This report identifies the challenges involved in this massive policy redirection. It also assesses the outcomes of these changes, as well as their distributional consequences for poor households and other disadvantaged groups. It recommends directions for future reforms and research to improve infrastructure performance, identifying pricing policies that strike a balance between economic efficiency and social equity, suggesting rules governing access to bottleneck infrastructure facilities, and proposing ways to increase poor people's access to these crucial services.

Book The Multinational Enterprise and Legal Control

Download or read book The Multinational Enterprise and Legal Control written by Cynthia Day Wallace and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2002-04-02 with total page 1364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-awaited new book from Cynthia Day Wallace picks up the thread of her best-selling "Legal Control of the Multinational Enterprise: National Regulatory Techniques and the Prospects for International Controls," In the present work she applies herself to legal and pragmatic aspects of control surrounding MNE operations. The primary focus is on legal and administrative techniques and measures practised by host states to control - transparently or less so - foreign MNE activity within their territories, or even extraterritorially when effects are felt within national boundaries. The primary geographic focus is the six most investment-intensive industrialized states (namely, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom). At the same time an important message of the present study is precisely the implication for the developing countries as well as for the emerging market economies of central and eastern Europe - and even Asian nations besides Japan, because it is the sharing of this very 'experience of years' that can best serve to facilitate a fuller participation on the part of the up-and-coming economies in the same global market place.

Book Conversations on Russia

Download or read book Conversations on Russia written by Padma Desai and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-13 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the discussion of Russia's recent post-Communist history has amounted, both in Russia and the West, to a series of monologues by strong-minded people with starkly divergent views. In contrast, Padma Desai's conversations with influential, intelligent participants and observers provide the reader with a broad, nuanced view of what has and has not happened in the last fourteen years, and why. Conversations from Russia will thus serve as a much-needed reference volume, both for academics who study Russia and for laypeople who only have vague perceptions of what has occurred in Russia since the collapse of Communism. In conversations with important figures like Boris Yeltsin, George Soros, Anatoly Chubais, and Yegar Gaidar, Desai considers questions like why the Soviet Union fell apart under Gorbachev, what went wrong with economic reforms after Gorbachev, whether the privatization of Russian assets could have been managed differently, and what the prospects are for the Russian economy in the near future. Desai, a recognized expert in the field of Soviet studies, ties the interviews together with an introduction, ultimately reaching her own judgment on each issue considered in the conversations. This book will appeal to researchers and students in developmental economics, political economy, and Soviet studies, and educated laypeople interested in Russia.

Book Law and Practice of International Arbitration in the CIS Region

Download or read book Law and Practice of International Arbitration in the CIS Region written by Kaj Hober and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2016-04-24 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The former Soviet republics of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) generate a significant and growing amount of work for the major Western and CIS regional international arbitral institutions. This book, a country-by-country analysis of regulation and practice of international arbitration in ten CIS jurisdictions, offers the first comprehensive review of commercial arbitration in the region. It also analyses notable developments in the use of arbitration mechanisms contained in bilateral and multilateral investment treaties affecting the region. The book provides not only a detailed analysis of the law, but also insight from local practitioners into the culture of arbitration and how the law is applied in each jurisdiction. Jurisdictions covered include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. In addition to detailed discussion of the particular features of arbitral practice in each jurisdiction, contributions cover the following issues and topics: • arbitrability of disputes and public policy; • arbitral procedure; • recognition and enforcement of commercial and investor-state arbitration awards; • implementation of the UNCITRAL Model Law and other instruments affecting arbitral practice and procedure; • statistics from key arbitration institutions; • adherence to the ICSID, New York and key regional conventions relevant to arbitration; • relevant regulations, cases as well as applicable bilateral investment treaties; • law and practice related to investor-state arbitration; and • role of the Court of the Eurasian Economic Union. An informative introductory chapter provides detailed discussion and analysis of historic and current trends affecting arbitration practice among the CIS countries, including the role of regional conventions relatively unknown in the West. As a comprehensive overview of international arbitration in this burgeoning region, this book has no peers. It is sure to be highly valued and used by lawyers, arbitrators, and academics concerned with alternative dispute resolution, as well as by arbitration institutions, companies, states, and individuals engaged in arbitration.

Eastern Europe: An Introduction to the People, Lands, and Culture sheds light on modern-day life in the 16 nations comprising Eastern Europe. Going beyond the history and politics already well documented in other works, this unique three-volume series explores the social and cultural aspects of a region often ignored in books and curricula on Western civilization. The volumes are organized by geographic proximity and commonality in historical development, allowing the countries to be both studied individually and juxtaposed against others in the region. The first volume covers the northern tier of states, the second looks at lands that were once part of the Hapsburg empire, and the third examines the Balkan states. Each chapter profiles a single country—its geography, history, political development, economy, and culture—and gives readers a glimpse of the challenges that lie ahead. Vignettes on various topics of interest illuminate the unique character of each country.
