Certainly for the starved and bedraggled prisoner Destin, the idea that magic might somehow be able to deliver him from the horrors of slavery is a fantasy indeed. He carries with him a terrible and deadly secret, for he possesses a spark of those who were once hailed as the sole protectors of Alluvion, the Highborn: people capable of wielding powerful magic. Though the Highborn kept the peace for hundreds of years, their reign came to an abrupt end and they vanished, never to be seen again. Destin may be the key that will unlock the door to this mystery, but struggles to cultivate his powers; he knows if he is discovered the penalty will surely be a painful death. Despite all this, Destin knows the secret that will utterly shatter the fabric of their world: There is magic in Alluvion.

Book excerpt: Shakespeare used the idiom “But in the end, truth will come out.” The apropos title of this book, Legacy, is based on a true story. This is a historical novel based on the life of Mary Fisher. Born in a slave shack in 1871 to a black mother while amid flooding and a malaria epidemic, the heroine of the story was the daughter of the widower plantation owner. Severe flooding and a yellow fever depredation left her with only an older half sister, Emerald, and her father, Colonel Gallager, who named her Felice in the story. Raised as daddy’s little princess, she had an idyllic childhood. Though her father died when she was a teenager, he had arranged for her to attend a Catholic boarding school in New Orleans. There she acquired a proper education and mastered the social graces. After graduating, she remained at school since she had no place to return. Stunningly beautiful, Felice worked as a governess to relatives of the Louisiana governor for a time. After a disappointing first love affair, she matured to become an adult, a passed-for-white madam of a bordello in New Orleans. Under Jim Crow laws, it was illegal for black women to even be present in such an establishment, much less own one. By the roaring twenties, a few Corpus Christi community leaders decided that the only thing missing from their fair Gulf Coast city was a first-class bordello. The gentlemen went to New Orleans, where they asked the real Mary Fisher to relocate her operation. She realized the value of protection and benefits that these men could provide and took them up on their offer. After decades in business and retirement at age seventy-five with abundant jewelry, cash, and rental property, the woman was murdered. The story evolves into a true crime mystery with an unexpected ending.

Book excerpt: A ground-breaking work of nation building, this unique biographical book by many of English and French Canada's best-known writers and thinkers -- Margaret Atwood, Lucien Bouchard, Dr. Samantha Nutt, Ken Dryden, etc. -- tells the story of the extraordinary legacy of the French contribution to our very way of life. In 1913, schoolgirls found a heavy metal plaque peeking out of the soil in St-Pierre, South Dakota. On it they saw engraved characters and signs they could not decipher. They took the plaque back home, and somehow, it found its way into the hands of a local historian who immediately realized the importance of the artifact. One hundred and seventy years earlier, French-Canadian explorer Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye had written about his travels to the west in search of the elusive "Western Sea." In his journal, he remembered: "I placed upon a hillock near the fort a lead plaque with the arms and inscription of the King." That was the plaque found by the children, the proof that de la Vérendrye was the first white man to set eyes on the Rockies, 60 years before Lewis and Clark's famous expedition. Traces of the French-Canadians' contribution to North American history can be found in all regions of the continent. More often than not, we are unaware of or indifferent towards these signs. Yet the descendants of the French travelled farther than one would expect, exploring the land and a wide variety of fields of human activity (science, arts, economy, etc.). Through their audacity, their courage and their determination, they shaped Canada -- and, to a smaller but still significant extent -- the United States. In a unique partnership with Les Éditions La Presse, Legacy is the story of a dozen French-Canadian pioneers, from the era of Nouvelle-France up to the 20th century. This ambitious book project will take the form of a series of biographical essays written by Canadian personalities and leading authors. Through the lives of these extraordinary persons, the authors will reflect on the French-Canadian legacy. They are all convinced that Canada would not be what it is today were it not for these French-speaking Canadians who explored the land, hung on to their culture while respecting that of others, longed for peace, fought with courage, and stood up for a brand of humanism that helped shape the country we live in today.

Book excerpt: Andalon barely remembers the Brother’s War, but one woman does... Hiding a dark past, one woman sheltered four children from the world. Keeping promises to the dead, she knew one day truths must be told. That time has come, and she must dust off her thirst for revenge or watch evil men claim Andalon's legacy. Here is the first volume of T.B. Phillips' action-packed series Children of Andalon. This modern fantasy combines magic with emotion while delivering political intrigue and adventure. Andalon Legacy Revolution once pitted pirates and outlaws against an oppressive crown. That fateful clash nearly destroyed the continent but also protected it from another, far more advanced, society that farmed its supernatural powers. Now three brothers, raised on the frontier and far away from their true origins, seek adventure. The mysterious and magical Dreamers have arrived, seeking to take one of them away without explanation. As the lies of their family are exposed, the boys begin to understand the extent of their own potential. Each is meant for greatness, despite having been blinded to their destiny. Elsewhere, a young girl must also journey. Deeply controlled by the tradition of her people, an internal struggle ensues that threatens her existence and all she loves. Discovering the power of a goddess along the way, she must reconnect to a father long dead if not entirely forgotten. Will she choose to blaze her own path or give in to tradition? Andalon Legacy is part of the overarching Andalon® Saga, a tale set in a world many centuries after the destruction of our own. It questions human nature, mankind’s frequent mistakes, and also our potential. It weighs our love and compassion while also balancing vengeance.

Book Defending General Custer s Legacy Complete Illustrated Trilogy

Download or read book Defending General Custer s Legacy Complete Illustrated Trilogy written by Elizabeth Bacon Custer and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-12 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Bacon Custer began writing articles and making speaking engagements praising the glory of what she presented as her "martyred" husband, General George Armstrong Custer. Her three books—Boots and Saddles (1885), Tenting on the Plains—(1887), and Following the Guidon (1890) aimed at glorifying her dead husband's memory. Though generally considered to be largely factually accurate, they were clearly slanted in Custer's favor. Her efforts were successful. The image of a steely Custer leading his men against overwhelming odds only to be wiped out while defending their position to the last man became as much a part of American lore as the Alamo.
