Book Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors

Download or read book Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors written by William B. Bonvillian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American economy faces two deep problems: expanding innovation and raising the rate of quality job creation. Both have roots in a neglected problem: the resistance of Legacy economic sectors to innovation. While the U.S. has focused its policies on breakthrough innovations to create new economic frontiers like information technology and biotechnology, most of its economy is locked into Legacy sectors defended by technological/ economic/ political/ social paradigms that block competition from disruptive innovations that could challenge their models. Americans like to build technology "covered wagons" and take them "out west" to open new innovation frontiers; we don't head our wagons "back east" to bring innovation to our Legacy sectors. By failing to do so, the economy misses a major opportunity for innovation, which is the bedrock of U.S. competitiveness and its standard of living. Technological Innovation in Legacy Sectors uses a new, unifying conceptual framework to identify the shared features underlying structural obstacles to innovation in major Legacy sectors: energy, air and auto transport, the electric power grid, buildings, manufacturing, agriculture, health care delivery and higher education, and develops approaches to understand and transform them. It finds both strengths and obstacles to innovation in the national innovation environments - a new concept that combines the innovation system and the broader innovation context - for a group of Asian and European economies. Manufacturing is a major Legacy sector that presents a particular challenge because it is a critical stage in the innovation process. By increasingly offshoring production, the U.S. is losing important parts of its innovation capacity. "Innovate here, produce here," where the U.S. took all the gains of its strong innovation system at every stage, is being replaced by "innovate here, produce there," which threatens to lead to "produce there, innovate there." To bring innovation to Legacy sectors, authors William Bonvillian and Charles Weiss recommend that policymakers focus on all stages of innovation from research through implementation. They should fill institutional gaps in the innovation system and take measures to address structural obstacles to needed disruptive innovations. In the specific case of advanced manufacturing, the production ecosystem can be recreated to reverse "jobless innovation" and add manufacturing-led innovation to the U.S.'s still-strong, research-oriented innovation system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant collection of Texas paintings and prints hangs humbly and inconspicuously throughout the offices, conference rooms, and hallways of Texas A&M University Press. These works comprise the Frank H. Wardlaw Collection of Texas Art, named in honor of the Press’s founding director, who was one of the genuine publishing icons of his day. Established in 1983 at the dedication of the new headquarters of Texas A&M University Press on the campus of Texas A&M, the collection began with twenty inaugural contributions that came as gifts from respected Texas artists whose art appeared in the books Wardlaw had shepherded to publication at the Press. Since then, the collection—which continues to be linked to artists published by the Press—has grown to house more than one hundred paintings, photographs, and illustrations. Among the noted artists featured in the collection are E. M. (Buck) Schiwetz, Otis Dozier, Michael Frary, Everett Spruce, Emily Guthrie Smith, Jerry Bywaters, and, among more recent additions, Dorothy Hood and Richard Stout. Through interviews with longtime staff and research into the Press’s book files and correspondence, William and Linda Reaves have uncovered the captivating history of this unlikely collection. In A Book Maker’s Art, they present the freshly assembled story of the Wardlaw collection, from its modest yet unique beginning to its present-day status as one of the university’s excellent collections of Texas art, reflecting the exceptional bond of arts and letters that has come to distinguish Texas A&M University Press.

Book Legacy in the Making Building a Long Term Brand to Stand Out in a Short Term World

Download or read book Legacy in the Making Building a Long Term Brand to Stand Out in a Short Term World written by Mark Miller and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2019 International Book Award, Silver Medalist in the 2019 American Business Awards, Finalist for International Book of the Year at the 2019 Business Book Awards, and one of Forbes' Top Ten Business Books for 2018. A book for a different breed of business leader, one who looks beyond the moment to create a life of significance. Most of us are familiar with the traditional way of looking at legacy—something preserved in the past. Traditional legacy is all around us, evidenced by the steady churn of autobiographies, bequests, commemorations, and dedications we are forever leaving in our collective cultural wake. This is not the legacy you will find in this book. Legacy in the Making celebrates an active, dynamic form of “modern legacy,” seen through the eyes of a select group of extraordinary men and women who are pursuing their enduring ambitions in the age of now. More than caretakers of the past, these modern legacy builders are also the authors of a vital today and tomorrow. Rather than leaving their legacies behind them, they are looking ahead to harness their long-term ambitions and inspire others to help carry them forward. These are not static, traditional legacies. These are legacies in the making.

Book HP Sauce My Ancestors Legacy

Download or read book HP Sauce My Ancestors Legacy written by Nigel Britton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we have television programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are to thank for the hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts who have now taken up the fascinating hobby of tracing their ancestors, learning about their careers and lives. The author was drawn to the history of HP Sauce and his family's involvement, having spent several years researching childhood anecdotes. His ancestors the Eastwood, Moore, and Britton families all had several business interests in the Victorian and Edwardian periods in the manufacturing industries that were commonplace throughout the North and Midlands of the United Kingdom during that period. HP Sauce perhaps being one of those most famous amongst them. With decades of rumours and myths about the true meaning of the acronym HP, and with the modern medium of the Internet adding to that speculation, the author set about to seek out the truth of his ancestors involvement with the sauce, and this interest brought about his book, HP Sauce: My Ancestors' Legacy and Its History from 1874 to 2013.
