Book excerpt: Leftover Soldiers tells the story of the Western Frontier after the last battle of the Civil War was fought near Brownsville, Texas. When the blood stopped flowing and the rifles were stacked for the last time, Texas became home to thousands of ex-soldiers from both sides, most with few prospects for their future. The story follows three ex-Union soldiers and one Confederate soldier, thrown together by circumstance, trying to move forward with their life on the ragged edges of the frontier. In the winter they find work as buffalo runners on the wide-open prairies of the Texas panhandle. In the spring they sign on as cowboys driving thousands of longhorn cattle north from San Antonio to the newly formed Wyoming Territory. Life on the prairie proves to be another battle against the weather, Indian attacks, displaced men turned outlaws and often against each other. The never-ending strain of the dangerous, back-breaking work helps to dull the horrors of war as each man comes to terms with his own past demons and begins to find his own path to the future on the prairies of the rapidly expanding country.

Book excerpt: A topical and richly entertaining history of food preservation and food waste in Britain from the sixteenth-century kitchen to the present day. In Leftovers, Eleanor Barnett explores the many ingenious ways in which our ancestors sought to extend the life of food through preservation, the culinary reuse of leftovers and the recycling of food scraps. Embracing a broad historical lens, the book spans Tudor household management; the world-changing inventions in food preservation of the Industrial Revolution from the tin can to artificial refrigeration; the growth of public health initiatives and organised food waste collection in the Victorian era; state promotion of thrifty eating during the two World Wars; and the politics of food and packaging waste in the modern era of sustainability. Opening a window on the everyday experiences of ordinary people in the past, Leftovers reveals how factors such as religious belief, class identities and gender have historically shaped attitudes towards food waste. At a time when a third of the food we produce globally is wasted, Leftovers links its central historical focus to humanitarian and environmental issues of urgent contemporary interest - including climate change, globalisation, scientific advancement, poverty and inequality.

Book excerpt: Reality is relative in the mind of the beholder. In the reality of the mind, all things are possible. In science a particle flows all ways. If it can happen, it will happen. So, somewhere far away, in a distant universe quite similar to our own, this story most definitely could be true, even if it's just a thought tucked away inside someone's mind. But for now, in our reality, this is just a dream. Merging with the quantum bio suit, Professor O straps on a parachute before grabbing the new born baby he laid conveniently on the floor. His leg, still bleeding from the wreck, was bandaged with some cloth torn from an old shirt. The baby cooed on the floor as the professor tied on the cloth. Now, baby in hand, he flashes through time. Popping out in the sky, exactly where Mai programmed, the professor releases his parachute. He did it this way in an open field, high in the sky, to avoid accidentally merging with some random animal, or whatever else might be running across the ground. Standing in the distance by a tree, completely unnoticed by the professor, a bright young reporter drops his cup of coffee to the ground, warm latte splashes everywhere. This was definitely a big scoop. Rushing to his old red scooter, he grabs his camera. Looking back to the sky, he knew the opportunity was gone. Back in the future, Dr. Stein, who is desperately trying to steal the professor's work, directs Mr. Ruse into a metal cage, giving him a clump of gold. His destination was much closer to the professor's than the place where Sasha was running through the woods, a place where some say a dragon is in the sky. Tristan, yet to learn any of this, connects them all.

Book Lost Causes

  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Lost Causes written by Bradley R. Clampitt and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2022-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking analysis of Confederate demobilization examines the state of mind of Confederate soldiers in the immediate aftermath of war. Having survived severe psychological as well as physical trauma, they now faced the unknown as they headed back home in defeat. Lost Causes analyzes the interlude between soldier and veteran, suggesting that defeat and demobilization actually reinforced Confederate identity as well as public memory of the war and southern resistance to African American civil rights. Intense material shortages and images of the war’s devastation confronted the defeated soldiers-turned-veterans as they returned home to a revolutionized society. Their thoughts upon homecoming turned to immediate economic survival, a radically altered relationship with freedpeople, and life under Yankee rule—all against the backdrop of fearful uncertainty. Bradley R. Clampitt argues that the experiences of returning soldiers helped establish the ideological underpinnings of the Lost Cause and create an identity based upon shared suffering and sacrifice, a pervasive commitment to white supremacy, and an aversion to Federal rule and all things northern. As Lost Causes reveals, most Confederate veterans remained diehard Rebels despite demobilization and the demise of the Confederate States of America.

Book Elvis s Army

  • Author : Brian McAllister Linn
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

Download or read book Elvis s Army written by Brian McAllister Linn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the U.S. Army drafted Elvis Presley in 1958, it quickly set about transforming the King of Rock and Roll from a rebellious teen idol into a clean-cut GI. Trading in his gold-trimmed jacket for standard-issue fatigues, Elvis became a model soldier in an army facing the unprecedented challenge of building a fighting force for the Atomic Age. In an era that threatened Soviet-American thermonuclear annihilation, the army declared it could limit atomic warfare to the battlefield. It not only adopted a radically new way of fighting but also revamped its equipment, organization, concepts, and training practices. From massive garrisons in Germany and Korea to nuclear tests to portable atomic weapons, the army reinvented itself. Its revolution in warfare required an equal revolution in personnel: the new army needed young officers and soldiers who were highly motivated, well trained, and technologically adept. Drafting Elvis demonstrated that even this icon of youth culture was not too cool to wear the army’s uniform. The army of the 1950s was America’s most racially and economically egalitarian institution, providing millions with education, technical skills, athletics, and other opportunities. With the cooperation of both the army and the media, military service became a common theme in television, music, and movies, and part of this generation’s identity. Brian Linn traces the origins, evolution, and ultimate failure of the army’s attempt to transform itself for atomic warfare, revealing not only the army’s vital role in creating Cold War America but also the experiences of its forgotten soldiers.

Book Taking Command

Download or read book Taking Command written by David Richards and published by Headline. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Sir David Richards is one of the best known British generals of modern times. In 2013 he retired after over forty years of service in the British Army and a career that had seen him rise from junior officer with 20 Commando to Chief of the Defence Staff, the professional head of the British Armed Forces. He served in the Far East, Germany, Northern Ireland and East Timor. He was the last Governor of Berlin's Spandau Prison, when Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy, was its sole prisoner. In 2005 he was appointed Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in Afghanistan and as commander of NATO forces became the first British General to command US Forces in combat since the Second World War. In 2000, Richards won acclaim when he brought together a collation of forces in Sierra Leone to stop the ultra-violent Revolutionary United Front from attacking the capital, Freetown. In so doing he ended one of the bloodiest civil wars to bedevil the region. He did so without the official sanction of London, and failure could have cost him his career. As Chief of the Defence Staff he advised the government during the crises and interventions in Libya and Syria and oversaw the controversial Strategic Defence and Security Review. Taking Command is Richards' characteristically outspoken account of a career that took him into the highest echelons of military command and politics. Written with candour, and often humour, his story reflects the changing reality of life for the modern soldier over the last forty years and offers unprecedented insight into the readiness of our military to tackle the threats and challenges we face today.

Book African Kaiser

Download or read book African Kaiser written by Robert Gaudi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, European colonial powers scrambled in Africa for trade, land and political advantage. When the First World War broke out, they were forced to contend with one another not just in trenches on the Western Front, but in East Africa's swamps and savannahs. In that unforgiving landscape, General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and a small cadre of hardened German officers fought as equals with their African troops against the Allies, creating the first truly integrated army of the modern age.'African Kaiser' is the fascinating tale of a forgotten guerrilla campaign: of rhino charges and artillery duels with scavenged naval guns; of hunted German battleships hidden up unmapped river deltas; of a desperate army in the wilderness, cut off from the world, enduring starvation, malaria, and dysentery; and of the remarkable intercontinental voyage of Zeppelin L59, whose improbable 4,000 mile journey to the Equator and back made aviation history. But mostly, it is the incredible true story of General von Lettow-Vorbeck, the only undefeated German commander of the Great War.
