Book excerpt: William Kelly (1821-1906) was much more than a Brethren theologian who was a leader of the Moderate Exclusive Brethren movement, and also much more than an indiscriminate follower of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was highly regarded not only within the Brethren but also by Christian leaders of other denominations. In this book Dr. Critchlow examines Kelly's lively and scholarly appraisal of the German "School of Higher Criticism" and his commentary on a range of works of contemporary Anglican and non-conformist theologians. She argues that Kelly's exegesis was meticulous and scholarly and demonstrated his understanding of the whole canon of Scripture. Despite his ecclesiology, his theology was nuanced and cannot easily be stereotyped. As an expositor of the controversial topics, "the Atonement" and "the After-Life," he can be described as a Biblical literalist, but in his understanding of Biblical language and literary genre and philosophy, he can be seen as a conservative intellectual. While belonging to the evangelical school of thought, his theology shows itself to be much more complex than many of his evangelical contemporaries and gives him links with later Christian traditions. Through his deep spirituality, Kelly can inspire the reader's own spiritual aspirations.

Those with divergent doctrinal beliefs belonged to an epistemological Babylon; those polluted by the world belonged to secular Babylon. Babylon was contagious! It is from the pens of these writers that the Secret Rapture of the Church doctrine developed as a biological "fight or flight" response, and a psychological "fear and fantasy" response. Whilst the Brethren of the nineteenth century are the central focus, the book will have a wider appeal to those interested in the history of exegesis, hermeneutics, and Apocalypse studies, for it also offers an overview of hermeneutical approaches to the reading of Revelation, a survey of Babylon's "afterlife" throughout the history of the church, and new insights into the ways in which readers, texts, and contexts interact in the broader context of sectarian biblical exegesis.

The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.
