Book Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Past and Present

Download or read book Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Past and Present written by Lukas Vischer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship renewal is now on the agenda of many Reformed churches, as the need for adaptation and new approaches is acutely felt all over. How can the church faithfully worship God in the midst of rapidly changing situations? How can it constructively relate to widely differing cultural contexts? What is its place in the wider ecumenical scene? In preparing a sweeping survey of Reformed worship across time and place, this volume provides some help to those engaged with vital questions like these. Written by theologians and liturgical scholars from a wide range of churches and countries, these chapters explore the history of Reformed worship on every continent from the sixteenth century to the present. Surveying the most significant developments in the growth of Reformed worship, the book identifies the major "ingredients" that make the Reformed worship tradition distinctive and highlights those aspects of Reformed worship that are particularly relevant to present efforts at renewal. Indeed, an important component of this book is the inclusion of "A Common Reflection on Christian Worship in Reformed Churches Today," the result of a major consultation in January 2001 at the International Reformed Center John Knox. Revealing the rich variety of forms and diversity of perspectives that have made and do make up Reformed worship worldwide, this volume will be a valuable resource for church and worship leaders both in and outside the Reformed family. Book Following Faith with P T Forsyth

Download or read book Following Faith with P T Forsyth written by Donald K. McKim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique look at the Scottish theologian Peter Taylor Forsyth (1848-1921). Forsyth was an important theologian whose significance has been increasingly realized in the years since his death. He wrote a number of books and articles that focused on central aspects of the Christian gospel and their meaning for the church and the faith of church members in their daily lives. Each of the eighty-four devotions in this book takes a short theological quotation from Forsyth and explores its meaning and its significance for Christian living today--both for the church and for individual Christians. Here is spiritual wisdom that can help foster a stronger theological understanding and a more vital Christian life.

Book Baptism Church and Society in Modern Britain

Download or read book Baptism Church and Society in Modern Britain written by David M. Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an enlarged version of the author's Hulsean Lectures in the University of Cambridge for 1983-4. It considers the main movements in the theology of baptism, both that of infants and believers, in Great Britain from the Evangelical Revival to the publication of the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission's consensus statement on Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry of 1982. Thus as well as the shifts in the Church of England from evangelical to tractarian, 'broad church' to liberal catholic, there is a survey of the views of Methodists, Baptists and Congregationalists, with reflections from the scene in Scotland and Ireland, during the same period. It offers a survey of popular belief and practice about baptism from the eighteenth century to the present, because of the author's conviction that theological movements have to be seen in their historical context. In the case of baptism, in particular, a consistent difference has persisted between popular perceptions and the Churches' expectations, which poses significant challenges to the understanding of the Churches' mission in contemporary society.

Book The Gospel and the Catholic Church

Download or read book The Gospel and the Catholic Church written by Michael Ramsey and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reissue of Archbishop Ramsey s classic theological study of Anglican views of the church is important for students of ecumenism, and for those concerned with the relationship between Christ and the church in the New Testament. Although some of the book is dated, its conviction that the church s meaning lies in its fulfillment of the sufferings of Christ and that every part of its history is intelligible in terms of the Passion remains perceptive and challenging. Examining Scripture, doctrine, and history, Ramsey paints an intricate portrait of the church as an example of Christ s death and resurrection. He explores Eastern orthodox doctrine; explains the purposes and preconditions of the Reformation; and calls for a renewal of liturgical worship and reconciliation within the communion of the saints. Originally published in 1936 while he was serving as sub-warden of Lincoln Theological College, this was Ramsey s first book. After more than seventy years, its wisdom concerning the relationship between Catholic and Evangelical, and the underlying complementarities and tensions which characterize the Anglican tradition, remains theologically sound and biblically astute. Book The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology

Download or read book The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology written by Anthony C. Thiselton and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering everything from Abba to Zwingli, The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology offers a comprehensive account of a wide sweep of topics and thinkers in Christian theology. Written entirely by eminent scholar Anthony Thiselton, the book features a coherence lacking in most multiauthored volumes. Drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge, gained from fifty-plus years of study and teaching, Thiselton provides some six hundred articles on various aspects of theology throughout the centuries. The entries comprise both short descriptive surveys and longer essays of original assessment on central theological topics -- such as atonement, Christology, God, and Holy Spirit -- and on such theologians as Aquinas, Augustine, Barth, Calvin, Kng, Luther, Moltmann, and Pannenberg. The book also includes a helpful time chart dating all of the theologians discussed and highlighting key events in Christian history; select reading suggestions conclude each of the longer entries. Equally valuable for research and teaching, The Thiselton Companion to Christian Theology will be a go-to reference for pastors, students, teachers, and theologians everywhere.
