Book Lectures on the Book of Revelation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the Book of Revelation Classic Reprint written by William Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Revelation The work before the reader consists of lectures delivered in the ordinary course of ministry, taken in short hand, and now published for the second time. Much matter of a practical nature, due to the wants of the souls addressed, has been omitted; for which were substituted remarks of a more critical character, a few when the exposition was first printed, and now with considerably greater fulness and frequency. Mr. Elliott will find that his observations are subjected to an examination, always, I trust, friendly, but sometimes searching. He is not the man, however, to complain, because I have endeavoured, chapter by chapter, to bear in mind the capital points of the Historical system, which, through his able pen, has attained its neatest shape, with the most elaborate apparatus of evidence and argument in its favour. Of his zeal for truth, no less than of his general learning and minute research, specially in history and antiquities, it is hardly needful to say that any estimate of mine differs not from that shared by almost all who know himself and the Horae Apocalypticae. If I have spoken with plainness and decision, in matters which involve an adequate knowledge of the balance of testimony for and against disputed readings, or an accurate and comprehensive grasp of Scripture, in particular of prophecy, it is because I believe that these are his weaker points, and that his just reputation in some things might expose less instructed and indiscriminating admirers to be misled in others. Whether I have shown sufficient grounds for rejecting Historicalism, not as a partial accomplishment, but as the complete and exclusive fulfilment of the Apocalypse, it is not for me to say. Book Four Short Lectures on the Book of the Revelation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Four Short Lectures on the Book of the Revelation Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Douglass and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Short Lectures on the Book of the Revelation 1. This book, as all Scripture, should be interpreted according to the plain grammatical and literal meaning of the words used, giving each word the exact sense it bears in all other books. 2. The book is not, as is commonly thought, a book of symbols, although there are symbols in it. It should be read as, in the main, a literal prophecy of events to transpire in a future period closely preceding and following the return of Jesus to the earth. It is a message from the ascended Savior pertaining to his second coming. 3. The theory that a day means a year must be rejected: and the forty-two months, twelve hundred and sixty days, ten days, &c., be regarded as simple measures of time. 4. The dispensation in which we are living is non-prophetic and void time. 5. Reject the idea that the Revelation describes the history of the Christian Church during this dispensation. 6. It is also necessary to believe that in the mysterious orderings of Divine Providence, the old Eastern Roman Empire is to become resuscitated. It will yet be an attraction such as our California was in 1849, and the old empire become re-existent, old cities rebuilt, and called by their old names, Jerusalem and Babylon among others, and they will meet with great worldly prosperity for awhile. This will probably occur in the interval between the coming of the Lord down into the air for his saints and his subsequent descent with them to the earth in judgment. 7. The nineteenth verse of the first chapter describes two divisions of the book and not three, as is inferred from our English New Testament. The first division embraces the things which John saw, and what they signify, contained in the first five chapters. The second division embraces the things which are about to happen after these, contained in the rest of the book. 8. No reference to popery can be met with in Scripture. 9. The topic of the book being the second coming, it saves confusion to know that there are two stages to the Advent: First - the Lord comes down into the air for the purpose stated in the first five chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Harmony of Science and Revelation The following pages contain a course of lectures, on the harmony of science and revelation, delivered on week-evenings, during the course of last winter. These lectures were so favourably received, when delivered, as to induce me to hope that they might be more widely useful, if commit ted to the printed page. In extenuation of all detects I beg to state that they were written amid the pressure of pastoral engagements. And that they are published as they were delivered, with but a few trifling corree tions. It will also be remembered that, in presenting scientific truths to a general audience, the style and illustrations must be plain and popular, if we wish to engage attention; and all minute details, and lengthened references to authorities must be avoided. Book The Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Book of Revelation written by John Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation: A Series of Expositions These lectures were projected, aud more than half of them delivered to the people it is my happiness to serve in the Gospel, before I had any thought of their seeing the light in their present form. It was only after many entreaties on the part of others, and much hesitation on my own, that I consented to their publication. And this, not because of misgivings as to the soundness of the views advanced, but rather from a deep and unaffected consciousness of my unworthiness to deal adequately with so exalted a theme. Yet even a little help may be welcome to some; and I was anxious that those who had heard these lectures should be able to review, as a whole, that exposition which had, of course, been brought before them in separate parts, and at intervals extending over several months. To choose the Apocalypse as the subject of a series of lectures is in these days rather perilous to a man's reputation for common sense. The book has furnished occasion for the display of so many wild vagaries, that he who again attempts to unfold its meaning lays himself open to the suspicion that he has abandoned wholesome teaching, and in moonings about seals and vials, trumpets and dragons, is wasting time that might be better employed. Book The Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Book of Revelation written by Clarence Larkin and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Revelation: A Study of the Last Prophetic Book of Holy Scripture This work is the result of 25 years' study of the Book of Revelation. Twice within 6 years the writer gave a 4-months' course of Sunday morning sermons to his people on the Book. These lectures have also been given in Bible Institute Courses, illustrated with large, colored, wall charts. The Book of Revelation is interpreted from the Futurist Standpoint. Chapters two and three cover the present Church Dispensation. From chapter four until the end of the Book all is future. The writer's purpose is to show that the Book of Revelation is to be taken literally, and that it is written in chronological order. The text of the Old Version is used and is printed at the top of each subject. The chapter and verse divisions are ignored. The text is emphasized by the use of capitals and black type. This helps to explain it and make it clear to the general reader. The descriptive matter of the book is emphasized in the same manner. The book is also illustrated with over 30 charts, maps, and diagrams. Numerous cuts of symbols, beasts, etc., spoken of in the Book of Revelation are distributed through the book at the place where they are mentioned, and add greatly to its value by elucidating the text and saving much explanatory matter. The make-up and printing of the book is unique. The writer has broken all rules of book-making in his desire to make the average reader see and grip the truth. This he has been able to do because of his skill as a draughtsman, and because the Printers of the book, who are lovers of the truth and like to see it "Rightly Divided," were in sympathy with the writer's purpose, and have done everything they could to make the "printer's art" express the writer's thought. A book gotten up in this way is naturally more expensive to print than an ordinary book. The writer had to spend weeks and months in study and designing the charts, maps, diagrams, cuts, etc. These had to be inked in and lettered by hand. Then plates had to be made of the drawings, and electros of the plates. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Revelation of St John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revelation of St John Classic Reprint written by William Milligan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John In answering the call for a third edition of these Lectures the author has thought it desirable to make a change in the mode of their publication. In former editions the Lectures were followed by several Appendices, treating of such important subjects as the Authorship of the Apocalypse, its Relation to the Fourth Gospel, its Date, and its Unity. These topics appeal to a narrower circle of readers than the Lectures themselves; while, at the same time, the growing rather than diminishing interest in the subjects discussed, together with the progress of inquiry, render it necessary that they should be treated anew, and the treatment brought down to the present hour. The author therefore now separates the Appendices from the Lectures; and, after having reconsidered them in the light of the most recent literature on the subject, he hopes to publish them in a volume of Discussions similar, at least in part, to that which was spoken of in the Preface to the first edition of this work. This volume will be prepared with as little delay as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apocalypse, Vol. 2: A Series of Special Lectures on the Revelation of Jesus Christ; With Revised d104 The publication of the second volume of these Lectures has been delayed quite beyond what was contemplated. From the commencement of the undertaking, it was meant and stated that the Lectures would be written and delivered at different intervals of time, as might be found convenient; but it was not Supposed that the work would linger as it has. The slowness in the matter has been owing in part to the numerous other engage ments of the author preoccupying his attention, and in part to avoid dwelling too constantly upon one theme, which, though intensely important, is not much relished by some modern Christians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of the Christian Revelation and Lectures on Paley's Evidences Christianity on this ground too, as on many others, ' has, we think, not only won for herself the safety of a defence but has been enriched by the spoils of a victory. If m the first Book of this work, we have chiefly to do with the miraculous argument in the abstract; we pass in the second to that argument in the concrete, or consider the actual evidence for the miracles of the gospel. Even in this department it will be found to be more a work of principles than of details; and there are few of its lessons which we should, in opposition to a' prevalent bias, so like adequately to impress on the understand ing of the reader - as the inherently greater strength of evidence given by the scriptural than by the ex -scriptural, or by the origi nal than the subsequent witnesses for the truth' of the evangeli cal history; and also the far superior value of the Christian to the heathen testimonies. Download or read book The Revelation of John Classic Reprint written by Arthur Samuel Peake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John HE present volume owes its origin to an accident. The Hartley Lecture for 1919 should have been delivered by the Rev. A. T. Guttery. In consequence of his acceptance of an important Government mission to America, and the burden imposed by the Presidency of the National Free Church Council, he felt that it would be better to postpone his lecture. Accordingly I was invited to take his place and Dr. Guttery is to deliver the lecture in 1920. This request was made to me late in October, 1918. I was very heavily overburdened at the time, but felt it my duty to accept the call of my Church, especially since Hartley College had for some time been closed. Little could be done at the book before Christmas, but it seemed possible to complete it by the end of March. Illness and the unexpected reopening of Hartley College prevented this; all the more that University work had continuedwithout interruption, and that the Commentary on the Bible I had so long been editing was not finally dismissed till May. The book could not be completed till the end of July, since the new duties involved in the Editorship of the Holbom Review cut deeply into my time.
