Book An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Dascom Greene and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Spherical and Practical Astronomy The plan of the work embraces only those practical methods which can be carried out by the use of portable instruments. The fact that it is primarily intended for use in the class-room, and not for field use, will explain the omission of many details connected with the making of observations, which, while important, can only be learned by the actual handling of instruments. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Astronomy When we cast our eyes to the heavens on any clear and, by preference, moonless night, our attention is attracted by apparently in numerable points of light, of all degrees of brightness. These are the stars, which in all ages have drawn to themselves the attention of mankind. Mr. E. W. Maunder, in a previ ous volume of this series, has Shown how man's attention was first directed to the heavenly bodies, and how the mere recognition of the phases of the Moon, the varying positions of the planets and the seasonal changes Of the stars has developed stage by stage into the science of astronomy as we know it at the present day. Book A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Sir Robert Ball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Spherical Astronomy Astronomy on the one hand and the multitudinous details of Practical Astronomy on the other. I have aimed at providing for the student a book on Spherical Astronomy which is generally within the limits thus indicated, but I have not hesitated to transgress those limits now and then when there seemed to be good reason for doing so. For example I have just crossed the border of Dynamical Astronomy in Chapter VII., and in two concluding chapters I have so far entered on Practical Astronomy as to give some account of the fundamental geometrical principles of astronomical instruments. It has been assumed that the reader of this book is already acquainted with the main facts of Descriptive Astronomy. The reader is also expected to be familiar with the ordinary processes of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry and he should have at least an elementary knowledge of Analytic Geometry and Conic Sections as well as of the Differential and Integral Calculus. It need hardly be added that the student of any branch of Mathematical Astro nomy should also know the principles of Statics and Dynamics. As a guide to the student who is making his first acquaintance with Spherical Astronomy, I have affixed an asterisk to the titles of those articles which he may omit on a first reading; the articles so indicated being rather more advanced than the articles which precede or follow. Such articles as relate to the more important subjects are generally illustrated by exercises. In making a selection from the large amount of available material I have endeavoured to choose exercises which not only bear directly on the text, but also have some special astronomical or mathematical interest. It will be seen that the Tripos examinations at Cambridge and many. College examinations at Cambridge and elsewhere have provided a large proportion of the exercises. I have also obtained exercises from many other sources which are duly indicated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of General Astronomy for Colleges and Scientific Schools It has been intended to bring the book well down to date, and to indicate to the student the sources of information on subjects which are necessarily here treated inadequaw on account of the limitations of time and space. Special acknowledgments are due to Professor Langley and to his publishers, Messrs. Ticknor Co., for the use of a number of illustrations from his beautiful book, The New Astronomy and also to D. Appleton 85 Co. For the use of several cuts from the author's little book on the Sun. Pro fossor Trowbridge of Cambridge kindly provided the original negative from which was made the cut illustrating the com parison of the spectrum of iron with that of the sun. Warner Swasey of Cleveland and Fauth Co. Of Washington have also furnished the engravings of a number of astronomical instruments. Book A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy Vol 1

Download or read book A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy Vol 1 written by William Chauvenet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Spherical and Practical Astronomy, Vol. 1: Embracing the General Problems of Spherical Astronomy, the Special, Applications to Nautical Astronomy, and the Theory, and Use of Fixed and Portable Appendix Instruments, With an Appendix on the Method of Least Squares The methods of investigation adopted in this work are in accordance with what may be called the modern school of practical astronomy, or more distinctively the German school, at the head of which stands the unrivalled Bessel. In this school, the investigations both of the general problems of Spherical Astronomy and of the Theory of Astronomical Instruments arc distinguished by the generality of their form and their mathematical rigor. When approximative methods are employed for convenience in practice, their degree of accuracy is carefully determined by means of exact formulæ previously investigated; the latter being developed in converging series, and only such terms of these series being neglected as can be shown to be insensible in the cases to which the formulæ are to be applied. And it is an essential condition of all the methods of computation from data furnished by observation, that the errors of the computation shall always be practically insensible in relation to the errors of observation: so that our results shall be purely the legitimate deductions from the observations, and free from all avoidable error.
