Book Classical Principles for Modern Design

Download or read book Classical Principles for Modern Design written by Thomas Jayne and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior designer and decorative arts historian Thomas Jayne takes on the redoubtable Edith Wharton and her co-author Ogden Codman, whose 1897 book The Decoration of Houses is acknowledged as the Bible of American interior design. Wharton and Codman advocated for classical simplicity and balance, replacing the excesses of the Gilded Age. In Jayne’s view, “The Decoration of Houses is the level-headed, indispensable book on the subject. It is not an overstatement to say that it is the most important decorating book ever written.” How much of Wharton and Codman’s advice and how many of their principles are still applicable today? In Classical Principles for Modern Design, Jayne argues that Wharton and Codman’s fundamental ideas about the proportion and planning of space create the most harmonious and livable interiors, whether traditional or contemporary. His authoritative and engaging text traces contemporary ideas about design elements and furnishing rooms back to Wharton and Codman and shows where his design approach coincides and where it diverges from their views. The book follows the chapter organization of The Decoration of Houses—chapters on walls, doors, windows and curtains, ceilings and floors, etc.—and adds important new perspectives on the design of kitchens and the use of color, both major subjects that Wharton and Codman did not address. Drawing on his own work at Jayne Design Studio, Jayne has selected elegant, traditional interiors that demonstrate these principles. Projects range from a restoration of historic eighteenth-century public rooms in Crichel House in Dorset, England, to a mountain retreat in the wilds of Montana to an array of luxurious New York City apartments and country houses in the Hudson Valley. Captured in lush photographs by Don Freeman and others, all speak to Thomas Jayne’s commitment to the primacy of function, quality, and simplicity, derived from the ancient tradition of classical design. As he says, “Tradition is not about what was. Tradition is now.”

Book Pr cis of the Lectures on Architecture

Download or read book Pr cis of the Lectures on Architecture written by Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.

Book The English Renaissance of Art

Download or read book The English Renaissance of Art written by Oscar Wilde and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMONG the many debts which we owe to the supreme aesthetic faculty of Goethe is that he was the first to teach us to define beauty in terms the most concrete possible, to realise it, I mean, always in its special manifestations. So, in the lecture which I have the honour to deliver before you, I will not try to give you any abstract definition of beauty - any such universal formula for it as was sought for by the philosophy of the eighteenth century - still less to communicate to you that which in its essence is incommunicable, the virtue by which a particular picture or poemaffects us with a unique and special joy; but rather to point out to you the general ideas which characterise the great English Renaissance of Art in this century, to discover their source, as far as that is possible, and to estimate their future as far as that is possible.

Book Johannes Vermeer

Download or read book Johannes Vermeer written by Stephan Koja and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window by Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous works of seventeenth-century Dutch art. Preserved at the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, the painting has been restored, in an elaborate process lasting from 2017 to 2021. The removal of a large section of overpainting dating from a later period has profoundly altered the work's appearance and revealed the original composition. To showcase the discovery, the Dresden Gemaldegalerie is now presenting the Girl Reading a Letter along with other masterpieces by Vermeer and a selection of exceptional Dutch genre paintings that reveal parallels and reciprocities between the art of Vermeer and that of his peers. This catalog brings together texts by renowned scholars as they explore not only the restoration of this pivotal work but also fundamental questions on the visual vernacular and essence of Vermeer's painting, his optical realism, his iconography of love, and the lived realities of women in the Dutch Golden Age.

Download or read book Zipporah Camille Thompson written by T. K. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zipporah Camille Thompson: Looming Chaos is the exhibition catalog created on the occasion of the Looming Chaos exhibition that took place Spring of 2020 at the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University. The catalog features full color images of the art works, a suite of poems by rosa mendez, and a transcribed conversation between Thompson and LA-based weaver, Diedrick Brackens. Looming Chaos was a solo exhibition of Atlanta-based artist Zipporah Camille Thompson. The exhibition explores the artist's use of weaving to engage ideas of chaos. Thompson conceptualizes chaos as the tensions associated with personal and universal experiences of disaster and catastrophe. Her weaving practice enables her to materialize the destruction, disorder, and confusions of the world, transforming them into fantastical fiber abstractions. The deterioration of the environment, tumultuous personal histories, and the complexities of her own identity become fodder for creation.
