Download or read book The Object of the Atlantic written by Rachel Price and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Object of the Atlantic is a wide-ranging study of the transition from a concern with sovereignty to a concern with things in Iberian Atlantic literature and art produced between 1868 and 1968. Rachel Price uncovers the surprising ways that concrete aesthetics from Cuba, Brazil, and Spain drew not only on global forms of constructivism but also on a history of empire, slavery, and media technologies from the Atlantic world. Analyzing Jose Marti’s notebooks, Joaquim de Sousandrade’s poetry, Ramiro de Maeztu’s essays on things and on slavery, 1920s Cuban literature on economic restructuring, Ferreira Gullar’s theory of the “non-object,” and neoconcrete art, Price shows that the turn to objects—and from these to new media networks—was rooted in the very philosophies of history that helped form the Atlantic world itself.

Download or read book Conflicts of Interest written by MarÕa Amparo Ruiz de Burton and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, the recently discovered nineteenth-century novelist, broke many of the boundaries that circumscribed the life of both women and Hispanics in the southwestern territories of the United States. Not only was she the first Hispanic novelist to write English, but her courage and resolve took her into the circles of governmental and financial power where very few women had tread before. Conflicts of Interest captures the conflicted personality of María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, a woman pulled in different directions by tensions of class, race, gender, and nationality. The trajectory of Ruiz de Burtons life through her correspondence makes for a compelling and revealing narrative, one that brings to life the evolution of discourse and culture in the Southwest as it was becoming integrated in the United States a process which, some might argue, continues today. This volume is as complete a collection of the Ruiz de Burton letters as is possible, given the imperfect historical record. Included are various personal and business documents and a collection of articles about her family. Among her correspondents were such important historical figures as Samuel L. M. Barlow, E. W. Morse, Prudenciana Moreno, and Platón Vallejo. But this album is not a simple collection of letters and documents; rather, researchers Sánchez and Pita have made great efforts to reconstitute Ruiz de Burtons life and times through their analysis and commentary.

Download or read book Madrid on the move written by Vanesa Rodríguez-Galindo and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madrid on the move illustrates print culture and the urban experience in nineteenth-century Spain. It provides a fresh account of modernity by looking beyond its canonical texts, artworks, and locations and explores what being modern meant to people in their daily lives. Rather than shifting the loci of modernity from Paris or London to Madrid, this book decentres the concept and explains the modern experience as part of a more fluid, global phenomenon. Meanings of the modern were not only dictated by linguistic authorities and urban technocrats; they were discussed, lived, and constructed on a daily basis. Cultural actors and audiences displayed an acute awareness of what being modern entailed and explored the links between the local and the global, two concepts and contexts that were being conceived and perceived as inseparable.

Download or read book Integrating Language and Content written by Maria Dantas-Whitney and published by Classroom Practice. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definition of English language classroom is changing. When students have the opportunity to learn content and language at the same time, disciplinary boundaries overlap. Teachers are rethinking how they design courses, plan lessons, assess students, and collaborate with colleagues to support student learning and facilitate their own professional growth. In this volume, contributors describe practical examples of integrating language and content in classrooms in Italy, the Netherlands, Yemen, Turkey, Taiwan, Russia, the United States, and South Africa. Teachers help students achieve their goals--learning English for specific purposes such as advertising, fashion design, and philosophy; teaching adult learners by integrating English skills with health literacy, conflict resolution, and social justice; serving emerging bilingual students in learning grade-level academic material or valuable job skills. The book is divided into four sections that help readers navigate the sometimes chaotic intersection of language and content: Why Do Teachers Design Courses to Integrate Language and Content?; How Do Teachers Integrate Language and Content?; How Do Teachers Evaluate Language and Content Learning?; and How Do Teachers Collaborate to Integrate Language and Content?
