Book Leben mit mehreren Sprachen

Download or read book Leben mit mehreren Sprachen written by Rita Franceschini and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Shared Languages Shared Identities Shared Stories

Download or read book Shared Languages Shared Identities Shared Stories written by Doris Schüpbach and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how 15 immigrants from German-speaking Switzerland in Australia make sense of their migratory experience, of building a new life in a different language. It does so by examining their written and oral life stories. The analysis takes two complementary perspectives: Firstly, the construction of language identities is studied through the language practices and attitudes discussed and displayed by the participants. Secondly, the ways in which they create coherence in their life stories focuses on autobiographical identities where language is a medium of sense-making across their life course. The combined perspectives highlight the diversity among the participants and the complexities of language and identity construction in the context of migration.

Book Families Living in Two or More Languages and Cultures

Download or read book Families Living in Two or More Languages and Cultures written by Andrea Roth and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Intercultural Communication, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this term paper is to analyse the challenges and opportunities of bi-/multilingual families. Couples with two different nationalities and some, who have the same origin but immigrated into another country on the one hand, and children who have parents of different origins and therefore raised bi- or multilingual on the other, are to be analysed with regard to their mother tongue, language choice within and outside the family as well as their identity. Moreover, the phenomenon of code switching and its reasons as well as the use of language among siblings and between parents and their children will be examined. The last point of analysis shows the advantages and disadvantages of bi-/multilingualism outside the family.

Book Das geheime Leben der Sprachen

Download or read book Das geheime Leben der Sprachen written by Katharina Brizic and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Studies in Turkish as a Heritage Language

Download or read book Studies in Turkish as a Heritage Language written by Fatih Bayram and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage language bilingualism refers to contexts where a minority language spoken at home is (one of) the first native language(s) of an individual who grows up and typically becomes dominant in the societal majority language. Heritage language bilinguals often wind up with grammatical systems that differ in interesting ways from dominant-native speakers growing up where their heritage language is the majority one. Understanding the trajectories and outcomes of heritage language bilingual grammatical competence, performance, language usage patterns, identities and more related topics sits at the core of many research programs across a wide array of theoretical paradigms. The study of heritage language bilingualism has grown exponentially over the past two decades. This expansion in interest has seen, in parallel, extensions in methodologies applied, bridges built between closely related fields such as the study of language contact and linguistic attrition. As is typical in linguistics, not all languages are studied to the same degree. The present volume showcases what Turkish as a heritage language brings to bear for key questions in the study of heritage language bilingualism and beyond. In many ways, Turkish is an ideal language to be studied because of its large diaspora across the world, in particular Europe. The papers in this volume are diverse: from psycholinguistic, to ethnographic, to classroom-based studies featuring Turkish as a heritage language. Together they equal more than their subparts, leading to the conclusion that understudied heritage languages like Turkish provide missing pieces to the puzzle of understanding the variables that give rise to the continuum of outcomes characteristic of heritage language speakers.

Book Beyond Misunderstanding

Download or read book Beyond Misunderstanding written by Kristin Bührig and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges two tacit presumptions in the field of intercultural communication research. Firstly, misunderstandings can frequently be found in intercultural communication, although, one could not claim that intercultural communication is constituted by misunderstandings alone. This volume shows how new perspectives on linguistic analyses of intercultural communication go beyond the analysis of misunderstanding. Secondly, intercultural communication is not solely constituted by the fact that individuals from different cultural groups interact. Each contribution of this volume analyses to what extent instances of discourse are institutionally and/or interculturally determined. These linguistic reflections involve different theoretical frameworks, e.g. functional grammar, systemic functional linguistics, functional pragmatics, rhetorical conversation analysis, ethno-methodological conversation analysis, linguistic anthropology and a critical discourse approach. As the contributions focus on the discourse of genetic counseling, gate-keeping discourse, international team co-operation, international business communication, workplace discourse, internet communication, and lamentation discourse, the book exemplifies that the analysis of intercultural communication is organized in response to social needs and, therefore, may contribute to the social justification of linguistics.

Book Policies and Practices for Teaching Sociocultural Diversity

Download or read book Policies and Practices for Teaching Sociocultural Diversity written by Anne-Lise Arnesen and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future teachers require specific training on democratic culture and social cohesion. By focusing on reflective thinking, training can enable them to situate themselves in diverse environments, develop a clearer sense of their ethnic and cultural identities and examine attitudes to different groups. Improving diversity management at school in Europe begins with initial teacher training establishments. This book is designed to provide a basis to help ensure that the needs of future teachers in this regard are met. It puts forward 18 "diversity competences" that were identified by a team of European specialists in teacher training between 2006 and 2009. In order to open up the debate on competences, four consultation sessions were organised in Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Estonia. These sessions provided an opportunity to discuss these competences with key players (civil servants, government representatives, teacher trainers, head teachers, researchers, teachers and students) from a national and topic-based perspective

Book Language and Social Change in Central Europe

Download or read book Language and Social Change in Central Europe written by Patrick Stevenson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of language and social change in central Europe in the context of the end of the Cold War and eastern expansion of the European Union. One outcome of the profound social transformations in central Europe since the Second World War has been the reshaping of the relationship between particular languages and linguistic varieties, especially between 'national' languages and regional or ethnic minority languages. Previous studies have investigated these transformed relationships from the macro perspective of language policies, while others have taken more fine-grained approaches to individual experiences with language. Combining these two perspectives for the first time--and focusing on the German language, which has a uniquely complex and problematic history in the region--the authors offer an understanding of the complex constellation of language politics in central Europe. Stevenson and Carl's analysis draws on a range of theoretical, conceptual and analytical approaches - language ideologies, language policy, positioning theory, discourse analysis, narrative analysis and life histories - and a wide range of data sources, from European and national language policies to individual language biographies. The authors demonstrate how the relationship between German and other languages has played a crucial role in the politics of language and processes of identity formation in the recent history of central Europe.

Book Multilingualism Education and Change

Download or read book Multilingualism Education and Change written by Jean Jacques Weber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about language and education in one of the smallest European Union member-states, Luxembourg. It presents the results of an ethnographic study of code-switching and language ideologies among transnational, luso-descendant youngsters attending a number of youth centres in Luxembourg city. It offers a comprehensive description of the processes of construction and negotiation of new, emergent identities and ethnicities. The author considers the implications of these results for language-in-education policy, including the EU policy of multilingualism. He criticizes mother-tongue education and advocates instead the use of «literacy bridges». Clearly argued and widely applicable, this book is essential reading for students and researchers interested in multilingualism, migration and education.
