  • Author : Teresa Marques
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Shifting Concepts written by Teresa Marques and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts stand at the centre of human cognition. We use concepts in categorizing objects and events in the world, in reasoning and action, and in social interaction. It is therefore not surprising that the study of concepts constitutes a central area of research in philosophy and psychology, yet only recently have the two disciplines developed greater interaction. Recent experiments in psychology that test the role of concepts in categorizing and reasoning have found a great deal of variation, across individuals and cultures, in categorization behaviour. Meanwhile, philosophers of language and mind have investigated the semantic properties of concepts, and how concepts are related to linguistic meaning and linguistic communication. A key motivation behind this was the idea that concepts must be shared across individuals and cultures. With the dawn of experimental philosophy, the proposal that the experimental data from psychology lacks relevance to semantics is increasingly difficult to defend. This volume brings together leading psychologists and philosophers to advance the interdisciplinary debate on the role of concepts in categorizing and reasoning, the relationship between concepts and linguistic meaning and communication, the challenges conceptual variation poses to communication, and the social and political effects of conceptual change.

Instead, her duties are to read to him, through a speaking tube, from ancient manuscripts in obscure, nearly-forgotten dialects. A requirement for the job was skill in translating medieval French, and she now understands the reason for that requirement, and assumes her unseen employers interest in the descriptions of medieval spells and sorcery is that of an eccentric antiquary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Demographic Institute, or WDI, based in Washington, DC, is devoted to global conservationist issues, ranging from the balanced preservation of natural resources to population control. In opposition are many religious and conservative individuals and organizations, at least one of which is prepared to resort to violence and chicanery to press its issues and aims. As a result, the WDI has its open, or public, side as well as a clandestine force staffed by professional undercover agents from around the world. The secret side of the WDI swings into action when first one, then a second of its agents is detected and eliminated. Since the Institute does not know who or what they are fighting, they turn to an unlikely candidate to identify and track down their adversary. He is ex-Army Ranger Francis Xavier McNulty, who has become an activist priest. McNulty ferrets out a mole in the WDI headquarters, then moves to Europe where he is joined by other operatives to track down the assassin as well as accomplish a second mission of a political nature. One result is involvement with cardinals within the Curia. The assignment is nearly foiled when the WDI cell is uncovered and infiltrated by an element of the target opposing force.
