A rootless human being often feels like someone who dropped out of the sky with no known origin. Such a life has a tendency to bounce around with little or no anchor. Often, people with that type of background have a tendency to lose hope of striving, as they encounter difficult life problems in their new and emerging world. During the 1970s and early 1980s, there was a mass exodus of Nigerian students to American colleges and universities. Since then, most American-educated Nigerian graduates are forced to find jobs and settle in the United States. Being relatively new in the United States, the Nigerian community is emerging and discovering that there are problems associated with settling in the United State after all. One of those problems deals with educating and acclimatizing their American-born children with the ethos of life in the Nigeria that these parents left behind as students. Highlights of the book include: history and background of Nigerians who studied in the United States; how Amerigerians situation evolved; what has been done to help solve the problem; the realities of things and inevitable challenges for Amerigerians; dealing with Amerigerians situation, i.e. what Amerigerians can do; roses in our culture; and some helpful lessons to speaking the Igbo language.

On the one hand, everyone uses language, and virtually everyone has strong views about language. In the educational domain this seems to be especially true. Language is not merely an intrinsic component of the educational process as the medium of instruction in the classroom, but also serves as the mediator of social reality for students and teachers alike. It plays a central role in articulating and conveying not only social, cultural and empirical ideas, but ideological concepts as well. It is also used to make judgments about the speaker, not to mention its role in maintaining differential power relations. And yet, in spite of this, the role of language is not sufficiently recognized in classroom practice much of the time. Nor is language, except in fairly narrow ways, really an especially central part of the curriculum, in spite of its incredible importance. To be sure, we do spend a great deal of time and money attempting to teach students to read and write (that is, to provide them with basic literacy skills), and we provide nominal support for foreign language education programs. We also provide limited support for children coming to school who do not speak English. What we do not do, though, is to recognize the absolute centrality of language knowledge and language use for the educated person. This book seeks to address these issues from the broad perspective of critical pedagogy.

Words in Collision explores this tradition of language-mixing and its consequences. Returning to Shakespeare’s Henry V, Michael Ross asks why writers employ “foreign” phrases in their English-language texts, why this practice continues, and what it means. He finds that the insertion of “foreign elements,” rather than random or arbitrary, occurs in literary works that display a self-conscious preoccupation with language in general as a dynamic determinant of social relations. Discussing nineteenth-century works by Sir Walter Scott, Charlotte Brontë, and Henry James, the book demonstrates how multilingualism connects with themes of cosmopolitanism, estrangement, and resistance to social convention. In the second half of the book, the multilingual practices of canonical Anglo-American literature are compared with postcolonial texts by Caribbean, Nigerian, and Indian authors, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Arundhati Roy, whose choice of language is fraught with complex moral and artistic implications. Ross’s readings reveal both crucial departures and surprising underlying continuities in linguistic traditions often thought to be deeply divided in time, space, and politics. The first extended treatment of language-mixing in English texts, Words in Collision is critical to understanding past practices and future prospects for multilingualism in fiction.
