Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War in Iraq, the 2000 Election Debacle, the Monica Lewinsky Affair, and so many other pivotal events shaped the American experience in the 21st Century. This book takes the timelines for these critical events (and MANY more), and then it meshes them together for a historical perspective. They say "Hindsight is 20-20," and as such, readers can now see those events in the context of their times, and not the context of a politically-charged opinion piece. Here and now, readers can view the entire American experience in Iraq from President Bush Sr.'s 9/11/90 address to Congress (in which he declared the start of a New World Order), through the wars, the inspections, the repeated air campaigns, the failed diplomacy, and finally to Saddam's capture. There are also specific sections showing never-before seen timelines of The Ignored War over the No-Fly Zones in Iraq, and the growth of Al Queda in the New World Order. Events which continue to be viewed in a political perspective had a historical effect and not just a political effect.

  • Author : Alex Wellerstein
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nuclear weapons, since their conception, have been the subject of secrecy. In the months after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the American scientific establishment, the American government, and the American public all wrestled with what was called the "problem of secrecy," wondering not only whether secrecy was appropriate and effective as a means of controlling this new technology but also whether it was compatible with the country's core values. Out of a messy context of propaganda, confusion, spy scares, and the grave counsel of competing groups of scientists, what historian Alex Wellerstein calls a "new regime of secrecy" was put into place. It was unlike any other previous or since. Nuclear secrets were given their own unique legal designation in American law ("restricted data"), one that operates differently than all other forms of national security classification and exists to this day. Drawing on massive amounts of declassified files, including records released by the government for the first time at the author's request, Restricted Data is a narrative account of nuclear secrecy and the tensions and uncertainty that built as the Cold War continued. In the US, both science and democracy are pitted against nuclear secrecy, and this makes its history uniquely compelling and timely"--

Book The Praetorian STARShip the untold story of the Combat Talon

Download or read book The Praetorian STARShip the untold story of the Combat Talon written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.

Book Army Wings

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Jackson
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword
  • Release : 2006-09-19
  • ISBN : 1844153800
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Army Wings written by Robert Jackson and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2006-09-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fascinating story of army fixed-wing cooperation units who were made up of specially trained volunteer army personnel. These men were trained to fly, to reconnoiter across the front line in search of enemy forces and then guide artillery gunners onto the target. From its earliest days in World War I, small low-flying aircraft have flown unarmed into combat and relayed vital information to aid accurate fall of shot and to advise front-line ground troops of enemy strength and position. They were frequently attacked by fighter aircraft and had to avoid ground-fire, often flying below treetop height. They relied purely on flying skill to outwit the enemy and yet little is known of these unsung heroes of many wars. This book redresses the balance.

Book You Can t Fight Tanks with Bayonets

Download or read book You Can t Fight Tanks with Bayonets written by Allison B. Gilmore and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2000-03-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A startling omission from the extensive literature on the Pacific events of World War II is an analysis of Allied psychological operations. Allison B. Gilmore makes a strong case for the importance of psychological warfare in this theater, countering the usual view of fanatical resistance by Japanese units. Gilmore marshals evidence that Japanese military indoctrination did not produce soldiers who were invulnerable to demoralization and the survival instinct.

Book The Bedford Triangle

Download or read book The Bedford Triangle written by Martin W. Bowman and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bedford Triangle portrays the crucial part played by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE),US Army Air Force (USAAF) and American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in operations behind enemy lines in occupied Europe during World War Two. Milton Ernest Hall, a country house in Bedfordshire used officially as the UK headquarters of the US Army Airforce Service Command, was located at the heart of a network of top secret Allied Radio and propaganda transmitting stations, political warfare units and undercover British and American formations dealing in espionage and subterfuge. Martin Bowman draws upon revealing first-hand accounts, together with official documentary evidence, to provide tantalising glimpses of the cloak and dagger operations. The author's extensive research has revealed that Allied Secret Service organisations participated in even more unorthodox activities, such as clandestine propaganda and political warfare. He also reveals the truth behind what really happened to legendary band leader Glenn Miller.

Book Rethinking Media Coverage

Download or read book Rethinking Media Coverage written by Lisa Parks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-9/11 era, media technologies have become increasingly intertwined with vertical power as airwaves, airports, air space, and orbit have been commandeered to support national security and defense. In this book, Lisa Parks develops the concept of vertical mediation to explore how audiovisual cultures enact and infer power relations far beyond the screen. Focusing on TV news, airport checkpoints, satellite imagery, and drone media, Parks demonstrates how "coverage" makes vertical space intelligible to global publics in new ways and powerfully reveals what is at stake in controlling it.
