Book Lead Ores Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead Ores Classic Reprint written by T. C. F. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Ores Lead, although one of the commoner of the base metals, is present in the earth's crust only to the extent of a fraction of I per cent. Of the whole. In workable deposits, however, the proportion is much higher owing to a natural concentration of material. Lead is closely associated in nature with zinc, and their primary or sulphide ores commonly occur together. Zinc ores are more soluble than lead ores, hence in the zone of oxidation the former have frequently been leached away, and practically pure lead ore may occur above water - level. In this way were formed the lead carbonate deposits of Lead ville and elsewhere. Such bodies, however, give place to mixed lead and zinc sulphides in depth. Lead in nature is also intimately associated with silver, and many lead deposits are also the repositories of valuable silver ores. Galena itself is frequently argentiferous and may be regarded as the chief source of the world's supply of silver. Book Lead Silver Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall Devon and Somerset Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead Silver Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall Devon and Somerset Classic Reprint written by Henry Dewey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead, Silver-Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset Lead-ores. - On the map it will be seen that each granite mass is surrounded by a belt of highly metamorphosed rocks, and that the lead lodes never occur in the granite and seldom in these belts. The country rock is either a sediment or, more rarely, lava or ash, and never an igneous rock Of intrusive origin. There is a significant association of lead-ore with argillaceous sediments, which is apparently general in Cornwall and Devon; and lodes which course through interfolded beds of Slaty and sandy killas are rich in the former and barren in the latter. This phenomenon is well illustrated by sections (plates III and IV) where the stoped ground is entirely in Shaly killas. The Beer Alston lodes were rich in lead-ore while in Slate, but became barren near the granite. Most of the lodes course from north to south; a few, and those rich ones, course nearly north-east, and one or two in other directions. The lead content of ore mined in the United States was apparently over short tons, compared with tons in 1914, an increase Of tons, or 15 per cent. With the higher prices prevailing the percentage Of increase in value of the 1915 output was even greater as compared with other years. Book An Electrolytic Method of Analyzing Zinc Ores

Download or read book An Electrolytic Method of Analyzing Zinc Ores written by Harrison Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Electrolytic Method of Analyzing Zinc Ores: Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Department of Philosophy of the University of Pennsylvania in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In 1902 Edgar F. Smith (2) after expressing confidence that electrolytic methods would prove wholly satisfactory on ap plication to natural products gives results of the determination of zinc in a pure blende, using a sodium acetate electrolyte, the zinc being present as sulphate. The introduction of the rotating anode with zinc solutions by Exner greatly increasing the advantages of the electrolytic method has made an imperative de mand for further work along this line. With these facts in View a study of zinc blende was undertaken with the purpose of obtaining not only a method for the determ imation of the metal but also of the sulphur content of the min eral. The results have shown that both may be determined with ease from the same sample and in a shorter time than by any other satisfactory process. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead and Zinc Deposits of Northwestern Illinois, Vol. 21 The Galena limestone is by far the most interesting and important mineral-bearing deposit in the State, being the principal depository of the ores of lead and zinc, the former of which has been successfully mined in the vicinity of Galena ever since the first settlement of the country by the French. These mines are Said to have been discovered by M. Le Sener, who made an exploring trip up the Mississippi in the year 1700, but no attempt was made to work the mines until a century later when Julien dubuque, a half-breed of French and Indian descent, obtained a grant of land from the Fox Indians on the west side of the Mississippi, including the present site of the city of Dubuque, and commenced the business of lead mining in 1788, which be prosecuted successfully until his death in 1810. From that time on, the business was gradually extended, and in 1823 the tide of emigration began to flow rapidly from Kentucky and some of the eastern states, toward this Eldorado of the northwest, and in the next succeeding decade, dig gings had extended over nearly the whole extent of the lead bearing rocks of this region, including also that part of the mineral region embraced in the present area of the States of Illinois and Wisconsin. Book Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania

Download or read book Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania written by James M. Swank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to a History of Ironmaking and Coal Mining in Pennsylvania: Contributed to the Final Report of the Pennsylvania Board of Centennial Managers That there may be no misunderstanding. I wish distinctly to impress upon the mind of the reader the fact that I have not attempted to write a complete history of ironmaking and coal mining in Pennsylvania, but have assumed only to write such an introduction to their history as will contain a record of the principal events which mark the beginning of these two great industries of our State, and mark, also, the leading events in their subsequent development. Beginning with their beginning, I end with the progress they had made down to 1876, but only glance at the great gap between. Otherwise stated, the scope of the following pages embraces a statement of the first enterprises in iron making and coal mining in Pennsylvania, a reference to significant periods of their development, and a summary of ultimate results. Greater amplitude and detail could only have been possible by completely changing the plan upon which the two essays had been projected. I have undertaken to preserve only that part of the history of our iron and coal industries that is of most value and is in most danger of being lost. To those who would have been gratified to see in this volume a description of existing ironworks in Pennsylvania, it is proper that we should say that the American Iron and Steel Association published in 1876 a complete list of all such enterprises in the United States, which list is now being revised for publication in the spring of the present year. Book The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium Classic Reprint written by Walter Renton Ingalls and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of Zinc and Cadmium Although the zinc industry of the world ranks in importance with the copper and lead industries, there has never been printed heretofore a special treatise on the metallurgy of zinc. Such essays on this subject as have been published in generally available form are embodied in the handbooks on general metallurgy and industrial chemistry, which being necessarily brief fail to describe adequately the modern practice in this branch of metallurgy. Besides these there is no literature on the subject save in the files of technical periodicals and the transactions of scientific societies, chie y French and German, inasmuch as the Belgian and German engineers have led the way in this branch of metallurgy, until recently at least.
