Book Methodologies and Results in Grapevine Research

Download or read book Methodologies and Results in Grapevine Research written by Serge Delrot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grapevine is a crop of major economical interest, and wine represents a multicultural heritage which has been growing since several milleniums. Yet, modern viticulture must face several challenges. Global climate has increased berry sugar content (and alcohol in the wine) whereas phenolic and aromatic ripeness are not always achieved. Water supply is becoming shorter. New varieties better adapted to new climatic conditions might have to be planted, which may affect wine typicity. Phytochemical treatments are more controlled, and the consumer pays increasing attention to environmentally safe practices. New methods reducing pesticide use, but maintaining yield and typicity, must be designed. The present book illustrates the recent progress made in ecophysiology, molecular and cell biology, and pathology of grapevine, as well as in precision viticulture and berry composition. Combination of these new tools with field observations will undoubtly make it easier to face the challenges described above. These multidisciplinary contributions will be of interest to anyone involved in grapevine and wine activities.

Book The Origin and Evolution of Planetary Nebulae

Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of Planetary Nebulae written by Sun Kwok and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative volume provides a comprehensive review of the origin and evolution of planetary nebulae. It covers all the stages of their evolution, carefully synthesizes observations from across the spectrum, and clearly explains all the key physical processes at work. Particular emphasis is placed on observations from space, using the Hubble Space Telescope, the Infrared Space Observatory, and the ROSAT satellite. This book presents a thoroughly modern understanding of planetary nebulae, integrating developments in stellar physics with the dynamics of nebular evolution. It also describes exciting possibilities such as the use of planetary nebulae in determining the cosmic distance scale, the distribution of dark matter and the chemical evolution of galaxies. This book provides graduate students with an accessible introduction to planetary nebulae, and researchers with an authoritative reference. It can also be used as an advanced text on the physics of the interstellar medium.

Book The Technology of Wine Making

Download or read book The Technology of Wine Making written by Maynard Andrew Amerine and published by A V I Publishing Company. This book was released on 1980 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The revolution in the ancient art of wine makingreally began with Pasteur, whose knowledge of chemistry andmicrobiology led to the application of scientific principlesto the fermentation process. The scientific approachcontinues to grow in importance, although certain aspects ofgrowing and fermenting grapes, not to mention tasting thewine, defy definition. In an effort to keep abreast of thisburgeoning technology, an updated reference work explainscommercial production techniques for all types of wine (red, white, sparkling, sherry, port, fruit, and brandy) andprocesses for avoiding bacterial and non-bacterial spoilage.Winery equipment and design, the molds and yeasts of grapesand wines, and the chemistry of fermentation are discussedin detail. Although the major wine producing areas of theworld are described, emphasis is on American varieties, botheastern and western.

Book excerpt: An inspiring true story about rescuing a puppy-mill dog, fighting for justice and finding joy in an unexpected place. A memoir detailing the horror of Amish puppy-mill auctions and the truth behind the puppies in the pet store windows. Bark Until Heard teaches readers the importance of finding their passion and fighting for their cause. Living quietly in suburbia, writing for an international animal-welfare organization, I suddenly found myself on assignment in a dark Amish barn at a puppy-mill auction, looking into the eyes of a dirty, scared Chinese crested powder puff. In front of me wasn't just one dog needing rescue from a miserable life of constant breeding - there were hundreds. In that horrific moment, face-to-face with animal cruelty, I found complete clarity. With tears streaming down my face, I felt my soul open up. In the days and years that followed, I found my voice and the courage to passionately fight for thousands of silenced dogs force to live a life of neglect. A journey that taught me the importance of being true to a cause and of never giving up. **The author will donate a portion of the proceeds from this book to groups that rescue puppy-mill dogs and organizations that improve the lives of breeding dogs.
