Download or read book The Rare Art Traditions written by Joseph Alsop and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural and social history of art collecting, art history, and the art market In The Rare Art Traditions, Joseph Alsop offers a wide-ranging cultural and social history of art collecting, art history, and the art market. He argues that art collecting is the basic element in a remarkably complex and historically rare behavioral system, which includes the historical study of art, the market for buying and selling art, museums, forgery, and the astonishing prices commanded by some works of art. The Rare Art Traditions tells the story of three important traditions of art collecting: the classical tradition that began in Greece, the Chinese tradition, and the Western tradition. The result is a major original contribution to art history.

Download or read book Salvator Rosa in French Literature written by James Patty and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2005-01-31 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rosa's works began entering major French collections during his lifetime, and many of the passages at the heart of Salvator Rosa in French Literature describe, evaluate, and interpret paintings displayed in the Louvre. Recently, a large hall in the Louvre was named for Salvator Rosa; the painter, once dubbed "bizarre" by some critics in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, now holds a very visible place among the great artists enshrined in one of the world's great museums. Salvator Rosa in French Literature provides a comprehensive interpretation of Rosa's work and a clear evaluation of his mark on French literature."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book European Drawings 4 written by Nicholas Turner and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of drawings at the Getty Museum was started in 1981 with the purchase of Rembrandt’s Nude Woman with a Snake and has steadily expanded since then, so that now, at the turn of the new millennium, it stands at more than six hundred drawings and is, sheet for sheet, one of the best anywhere. The Getty goal is to create from the finest examples a collection of the different Western European schools of drawing before 1900, with special emphasis on the work of the most important and accomplished draftsmen. The collection now contains superb examples of the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Dürer, Rembrandt, Claude Lorraine, Watteau, Gainsborough, David, Millet, Manet, Van Gogh, and Degas. This is the fourth in the series of catalogues describing the drawings in the Getty Museum. Most of the drawings discussed in the present volume were chosen for the collection in the period of 1994 to 1998 and include examples from the Italian, German, Dutch and Flemish, French, Spanish, and British schools. Also included are several gifts from private collectors, which mark the start of a tradition that, it is hoped, will continue in the future. The catalogue entries for these new acquisitions are organized first by national school and then by artist. The book also includes a bibliography and indexes of artists, former owners, related drawings, prints, and works in other media.
Download or read book Delicious Decadence The Rediscovery of French Eighteenth Century Painting in the Nineteenth Century written by Monica Preti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of collecting is a topic of central importance to many academic disciplines, and shows no sign of abating in popularity. As such, scholars will welcome this collection of essays by internationally recognised experts that gathers together for the first time varied and stimulating perspectives on the nineteenth-century collector and art market for French eighteenth-century art, and ultimately the formation of collections that form part of such august institutions as the Louvre and the National Gallery in London. The book is the culmination of a successful conference organised jointly between the Wallace Collection and the Louvre, on the occasion of the acclaimed exhibition Masterpieces from the Louvre: The Collection of Louis La Caze. Exploring themes relating to collectors, critics, markets and museums from France, England and Germany, the volume will appeal to academics and students alike, and become essential reading on any course that deals with the history of collecting, the history of taste and the nineteenth-century craze for the perceived douceur de vivre of eighteenth-century France. It also provides valuable insight into the history of the art markets and the formation of museums.

Download or read book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art written by Darius A. Spieth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Download or read book Art Markets in Europe 1400 1800 written by Michael North and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reinvention of art-history during the 1980s has provided a serious challenge to the earlier formalist and connoisseurial approaches to the discipline, in ways which can only help economic and social historians in the current drive to study past societies in terms of what they consumed, produced, perceived and imagined. This group of essays focuses on three main issues: the demand for art, including the range of art objects purchased by various social groups; the conditions of artistic creativity and communication between different production centres and artistic millieux; and the emergence of art markets which served to link the first two phenomena. The work draws on new research by art historians and economic and social historians from Europe and the United States, and covers the period from the late Middle Ages to the early nineteenth century.
