Download or read book Le relazioni tra Stati Uniti e Italia nel periodo di Roma capitale written by Aa.Vv. and published by Gangemi Editore spa. This book was released on 2011-11-10T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Gli Stati Uniti e l Italia alla fine del XIX secolo written by AA. VV. and published by Gangemi Editore spa. This book was released on 2016-01-03T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book George P Marsh Correspondence

Download or read book George P Marsh Correspondence written by George Perkins Marsh and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He applied science to life, not with the disinterested precision of a scientist, but with the aims and methods of a humanist. After 1861 he represented the United States at the Court of Savoy, in the critical years in which Italy was built, and the United States reshaped along modern lines. From his perspective, he described prominent Italian contemporaries and their relations with the United States and his opinion could not be ignored by the Department of State. The hero of the Marsh reports was Giuseppe Garibaldi; the "devil", Napoleon III. His luminous exposition, with a clear and fresh language, revealed many aspects of his historical times and of the images of Italy, which were frequently corroborated by the diaries of American tourists and writers doing their "Grand Tour": far from being a modern country, Italy appeared a wonderful destination for traveling, the land of Dante, Machiavelli, Petrarca.

Book Victorian Radicals and Italian Democrats

Download or read book Victorian Radicals and Italian Democrats written by Marcella Pellegrino Sutcliffe and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the links between radicalism in Victorian England, and the Risorgimento movement in Italy. This book provides powerful new insights into the history of Italy's long Risorgimento, by tracing the entanglements of the Mazzinian "international". This informal group of men and women crossed the boundary of the Channel and the boundary of class to speak a common language and share a radical ideal: Giuseppe Mazzini's vision of a unified, republican Italy. Published in the radical press, the exile's writings on democracy, education, association and citizenship inspired both Oxford social reformers and self-improving artisans gathering in provincial reading rooms, co-operative societies, republican clubs and educational institutes: for them republican Italy became a transnationaldream. Indeed, when Italy was unified under a constitutional monarch in 1861, British Mazzinians were bitterly disappointed. Setting off for Italy on their first "co-operative tour" in 1888, East London workers embarked on an educational pilgrimage, dotted with Mazzinian landmarks. Despite the fin de siècle crisis, Victorian radicals' enduring faith in Italy's democratic future remained steadfast. Indeed, when Fascists subsequently appropriated Mazzini's national dream, post-Victorian Mazzinians would unequivocally voice their support for Italian anti-Fascists, who championed the principles of global democracy. Drawing on a wide range of material, the author adds a crucialnew dimension to the history of Victorian radicalism in Britain, and to the "new history of the Risorgimento". Marcella Pellegrino Sutcliffe is a Research Fellow of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.

Book Roman Sources for the History of American Catholicism 1763 1939

Download or read book Roman Sources for the History of American Catholicism 1763 1939 written by Matteo Binasco and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman Sources for the History of American Catholicism, 1763–1939 is a comprehensive reference volume, researched and compiled by Matteo Binasco, that introduces readers to the rich content of Roman archives and their vast potential for U.S. Catholic history in particular. In 2014, the University of Notre Dame’s Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism hosted a seminar in Rome that examined transatlantic approaches to U.S. Catholic history and encouraged the use of the Vatican Secret Archives and other Roman repositories by today’s historians. Participants recognized the need for an English-language guide to archival sources throughout Rome that would enrich individual research projects and the field at large. This volume responds to that need. Binasco offers a groundbreaking description of materials relevant to U.S. Catholic history in fifty-nine archives and libraries of Rome. Detailed profiles describe each repository and its holdings relevant to American Catholic studies. A historical introduction by Luca Codignola and Matteo Sanfilippo reviews the intricate web of relations linking the Holy See and the American Catholic Church since the Treaty of Paris of 1763. Roman sources have become crucial in understanding the formation and development of the Catholic Church in America, and their importance will continue to grow. This timely source will meet the needs of a ready and receptive audience, which will include scholars of U.S. religious history and American Catholicism as well as Americanist scholars conducting research in Roman archives.

Book Writing for Justice

Download or read book Writing for Justice written by Elna Mortara and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Writing for Justice, Elna Mortara presents a richly layered study of the cultural and intellectual atmosphere of mid-nineteenth-century Europe and the United States, through close readings of the life and work of Victor SŽjour, an expat American Creole from New Orleans living in Paris. In addition to writing The Mulatto, an early story on slavery in Saint-Domingue, SŽjour penned La Tireuse de cartes (The Fortune-Teller, 1859), a popular play based on the famed Mortara case. In this historical incident, Pope Pius IX kidnapped Edgardo Mortara, the child of a Jewish family living in the Papal States. The details of the play's production - and its reception on both sides of the Atlantic - are intertwined with the events of the Italian Risorgimento and of pre - Civil War America. Writing for Justice is full of surprising encounters with French and American writers and historical figures, including Hugo, Hawthorne, Twain, Napoleon III, Garibaldi, and Lincoln. As Elna Mortara passionately argues, the enormous amount of public attention received by the case reveals an era of underappreciated transatlantic intellectual exchange, in which an African American writer used notions of emancipation in religious as well as racial terms, linking the plight of blacks in America to that of Jews in Europe, and to the larger battles for freedom and nationhood advancing across the continent. This book will appeal both to general readers and to scholars, including historians, literary critics, and specialists in African American studies, Jewish, Catholic, or religious studies, multilingual American literature, francophone literature, theatrical life, nineteenth-century European politics, and cross-cultural encounters.

The conference “Independent Albania and Italo-Albanian relations, 1912-2012” was held on 22nd November, 2012 at the Sapienza University of Rome, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the declaration of the independence of Albania. Realized within the project PRIN 2009 “Empires and Nations in Europe from the 18th to the 20th century”, and thanks to the efforts of CEMAS (Research Center “Cooperation with Eurasia, the Mediterranean region and Sub-Saharan Africa”) and the Ph.D. in History of Europe, the conference was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Albanian Embassy in Italy, the Historical Office of the Army General Staff and the State Central Archives in Tirana. Italian and Albanian scholars gave their own analyses of the main topics of the history of Albania and of the Italo-Albanian relations with the aim of providing for the scientific community and the public useful and valid tools for reflection and judgment. The common intention of the participants was to give, on the occasion of a very important anniversary for the Albanian State, their own contributions to the knowledge and understanding of the difficult history of the country that shares with Italy old and firm relations and multiple economic, political and cultural interests.

Book Catholicism and American Freedom

Download or read book Catholicism and American Freedom written by John T. McGreevy and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two centuries, Catholicism has played a profound and largely unexamined role in America's political and intellectual life. Emphasizing the community over the individual, Catholics have alternately challenged and supported American liberals on a variety of controversial issues, including slavery, public education, economic reform, the movies, contraception, the nuclear arms race and abortion. The story of Catholicism is also international, as Catholics and non-Catholics reacted to people, ideas and events abroad, from the 1848 revolutions to the rise of European fascism in the 1930s and the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. This history of both Catholicism and anti-Catholicism puts the sexual-abuse scandal in the Church of the early 21st century and the media's response into a larger context.

Book American Jesuits and the World

Download or read book American Jesuits and the World written by John T. McGreevy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How American Jesuits helped forge modern Catholicism around the world At the start of the nineteenth century, the Jesuits seemed fated for oblivion. Dissolved as a religious order in 1773 by one pope, they were restored in 1814 by another, but with only six hundred aged members. Yet a century later, the Jesuits numbered seventeen thousand men and were at the vanguard of the Catholic Church’s expansion around the world. This book traces this nineteenth-century resurgence, showing how Jesuits nurtured a Catholic modernity through a disciplined counterculture of parishes, schools, and associations. Drawing on archival materials from three continents, American Jesuits and the World tracks Jesuits who left Europe for America and Jesuits who left the United States for missionary ventures across the Pacific. Each chapter tells the story of a revealing or controversial event, including the tarring and feathering of an exiled Swiss Jesuit in Maine, the efforts of French Jesuits in Louisiana to obtain Vatican approval of a miraculous healing, and the educational efforts of American Jesuits in Manila. These stories reveal how the Jesuits not only revived their own order but made modern Catholicism more global. The result is a major contribution to modern global history and an invaluable examination of the meaning of religious liberty in a pluralistic age.
