It is the fruit of some 40 years' research by Nicholas de Lange, who has collected most of the evidence himself, mainly from previously unpublished manuscript sources, such as Cairo Genizah fragments. Byzantine Judaism was esceptional in possessing an unbroken tradition of Biblical translation in its own language that can be traced back to antiquity. This work sheds light not only on Byzantine Jewish life and thought, but also on such subjects as the spread of Rabbinic Judaism in Europe, the Karaite movement, the ancient Greek translations, particularly Akylas/Aquila, as well as the relationship between Jewish and Christian transmission of the Greek Bible. An appendix traces the use of such translations down to the 19th century.

Book excerpt: At the end of the 11th century the ancient Hexateuch Ms. Ambrosianus A 147 inf. underwent a general restoration: the original majuscule writing was retraced throughout, some lost sheets were replaced, and a great number of variant readings were added, being sometimes preferred to the original text. The purpose of the restoration appears to have been a revision of the Septuagint text in order to make it conform to the Masoretic. Mariachiara Fincati provides a complete analysis of each individual modification by comparing each of them with extant Christian and Jewish Greek translations of the biblical text.

Les progrès de l'imprimerie et la domination culturelle des communautés de langue espagnole qui s'établirent dans l'empire, rendirent les publications en grec inutiles. La version grecque traduirait en définitive la volonté de perpétuer un enseignement d'ouverture allant du Même à l'Autre en passant par un Autre-Même ou par un Même-Autre. Les exemplaires des versions utilisées sont: a. la transcription faite par Hesseling de la copie de la Bodleian Library (Oxford), b. la copie de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris, collection de la Réserve, A470), les seuls exemplaires "survivants" actuellement connus.
