Book Desiderii Erasmi Roterodami Opera omnia Parabolae sive similia

Download or read book Desiderii Erasmi Roterodami Opera omnia Parabolae sive similia written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the editions of Basel (Froben, 1538-1540) and Leiden (Van der Aa, 1703-1706) the Amsterdam edition of the complete works of Erasmus of Rotterdam is arranged according to the division into nine ordines (categories) which Erasmus himself laid down for the posthumous publication of his collected works. Each ordo corresponds to a specific literary or thematic category within Erasmus' oeuvre, in the following manner: I -- Writings on philological and educational questions II -- Proverbs and sayings (Adagia) III -- Correspondence IV -- Writings on moral questions V -- Writings relating to religious instruction VI -- The Latin translation of the New Testament, the Edition of the Greek text and annotations VII -- Paraphrases of the New Testament VIII -- Writings relating to Church Fathers (including several translations from Greek) IX -- Apologies. EACH VOLUME of the Amsterdam edition contains one or more works by Erasmus and is indicated by a Roman numeral, which refers to an ordo, followed by an Arabic numeral, by which the volumes within each ordo are numbered. For example ASD I-3 contains the Colloquia (discussions, colloquies). Erasmus's correspondence (ordo III) is available in the edition of P. S. Allen, H. M. Allen and H. W. Garrod (12 vols., Oxford 1906-1958), and has for this reason not been included in the Amsterdam edition. For more information visit also the journal Erasmus Studies, (formerly called Erasmus of Rotterdam Society Yearbook) ( at: http://www.brill.com/ERAS ( also via http://booksandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/18749275 ). Desiderius Erasmus (Rotterdam, ca. 1466-Basel, 1536) enjoyed in his own lifetime an international reputation as a scholar and literary figure. His works (which were all written in Latin) cover the full range of letters, ethics and religion (cf. the ordines in his Opera omnia). In his own day and in succeeding centuries his writings have been frequently reprinted, in Latin as well as in French, German, English, Italian, Dutch and other translations. Publisher's note.

Download or read book De Regno written by Thomas Aquinas and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Aquinas begins by discussing different types of political systems, using the classical classifications. Only rule which is directed "towards the common good of the multitude is fit to be called kingship," he argues. Rule by one man who "seeks his own benefit from his rule and not the good of the multitude subject to him" is called a "tyrant." He argues that "Just as the government of a king is the best, so the government of a tyrant is the worst," maintaining that rule by a single individual is the most efficient for accomplishing either good or evil purposes. He then proceeds to discuss "how provision might be made that the king may not fall into tyranny," stressing education and noting that "government of the kingdom must be so arranged that opportunity to tyrannize is removed." He then proceeds to consider what honor is due to kings, to discuss the appropriate qualities of a king, and to make some points on founding and maintaining a city. Principium autem intentionis nostrae hinc sumere oportet, ut quid nomine regis intelligendum sit, exponatur.

Book excerpt: The first major literary presentation of Nostradamus's Prophecies, newly translated and edited by prizewinning scholars The mysterious quatrains of the sixteenth-century French astrologer Nostradamus have long proved captivating for their predictions. Nostradamus has been credited with anticipating the Great Fire of London, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the September 11 terrorist attacks. Today, as the world grapples with financial meltdowns, global terrorism, and environmental disasters—as well as the Mayan prediction of the apocalypse on December 21, 2012—his prophecies of doom have assumed heightened relevance. How has The Prophecies outlasted most books from the Renaissance? This edition considers its legacy in terms of the poetics of the quatrains, published here in a brilliant new translation and with introductory material and notes mapping the cultural, political, and historical forces that resonate throughout Nostradamus's epic, giving it its visionary power. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A masterful . . . intellectual and religious history of late medieval and Reformation Europe.”—Christianity Today"A learned, humane, and expressive book."—Gerald Strauss, Renaissance QuarterlyThe seeds of the swift and sweeping religious movement that reshaped European thought in the 1500s were sown in the late Middle Ages. In this book, Steven Ozment traces the growth and dissemination of dissenting intellectual trends through three centuries to their explosive burgeoning in the Reformations—both Protestant and Catholic—of the sixteenth century. He elucidates with great clarity the complex philosophical and theological issues that inspired antagonistic schools, traditions, and movements from Aquinas to Calvin. This masterly synthesis of the intellectual and religious history of the period illuminates the impact of late medieval ideas on early modern society.

Book Did the Early Church Baptize Infants

Download or read book Did the Early Church Baptize Infants written by Kurt Aland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-02-09 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Joachim Jeremias' 'Infant Baptism in the First Four Centuries' was originally published in 1938, an English translation did not appear until 1960 (based on the revised German edition of 1958). In 1961, Kurt Aland published his response to Jeremias' assertions. This English translation of 'Die Sauglingstaufe im Neuen Testament und in der alten Kirche' originally appeared in 1963. In this point by point refutation of Jeremias' main contentions, Aland insists that there is no direct evidence of infant baptism prior to the third century.

Book Devotional Poetry in France c 1570 1613

Download or read book Devotional Poetry in France c 1570 1613 written by Cave and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Cave studies the relationship between the traditions of personal devotion in sixteenth-century France and the poetry which flourished at the end of the century and the beginning of the seventeenth. It was a poetry of intense personal commitment, preoccupied with penitence and confession, the vanity of life, the imminence of death, the meaning of the Incarnation and the Passion; often verging on mysticism and mingling of the sensual, the intellectual and the spiritual in a manner often thought typical of the baroque. It was part of a European movement, and there is much here to interest the student of the early seventeenth-century sensibility. A comparable book on English literature is Louis Martz's The Poetry of Meditation, but the lines of Dr Cave's enquiry are new. The book has a fourfold interest: to readers concerned with French literature; to those with particular interest in the traditions of devotion; to those concerned with comparative studies in the baroque period, and to students of rhetorical analysis.

Book Relations

Download or read book Relations written by Mark G. Henninger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1989 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have known that a variety of medieval theories on relation existed, but no full-length systematic study has been attempted until now. With this book Henninger fills an important gap in our knowledge of medieval philosophy. Dealing with such varied thinkers as Aquinas, Henry of Ghent, Richard of Mediavilla, John Duns Scotus, Henry of Harclay, William of Ockham, and Peter Aureoli, the book will interest anyone concerned with late medieval philosophy and the transition to the early modern period.
