Après une introduction sur la situation de diglossie et de glottophagie en Afrique et, plus particulièrement, au Sénégal, en Côte d'ivoire, au Ghana et au Nigéria, l'auteure se penche sur les diverses méthodes scripturales utilisées par les romanciers de ces pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest. Mis à part les notes de bas de page et l'insertion occasionnelle de termes africains dans le texte, on distingue divers autres procédés, dont celui du doublage - où le mot en langue africaine est flanqué de son « double» en langue européenne -, la contextualisation, l'alternance codique, l'ethnotextualité, la pidginisation et la relexification. En ce qui concerne cette dernière, la tâche du critique est philologique, dans le sens où elle permet de retrouver la trace de la langue africaine (ici, le ndût, le malinké, le dioula, l'igbo, le yoruba, le wolof) en filigrane dans un corpus important de romans et autres genres littéraires. Certains des procédés décrits ici sont sur le déclin tandis que d'autres sont en plein essor. Les deux éditions anglaises de ce livre ont reçu un accueil enthousiaste dans le monde anglo-saxon et l'on doit se réjouir de le voir maintenant accessible au lectorat francophone. La perspective adoptée dans ce livre est de voir comment les apports intergénérationnels se modifient, comment la légitimité des aînés peut être rediscutée et comment les jeunes tentent d'échapper aux difficultés et aux contraintes. Ce regard a conduit les auteurs à trouver de nouveaux lieux pour observer les jeunes mais aussi des espaces communs aux différentes générations. Dans cet ouvrage, ils mettent en avant les continuités et les discontinuités des lieux de conflits et de négociations, ainsi que les stratégies de coopération qui marquent les rapports entre les générations. Pour cela, ils rendent compte des dynamiques intergénérationnelles, tant à l'échelle macro (société civile) qu'à l'échelle micro (espaces privés, tranches de vie), et croisent divers thèmes dans une optique pluridisciplinaire. Parallel to the development of the phenomenon, an important body of experiential texts has revealed its presence in various parts of the world. While the medical discourse is still struggling with this conundrum, literature gives way to different interpretations by revealing the interconnectedness between writing and starving. Both signifying practices are experiences of the limit where fluxes of particles - food, words - are in constant interaction. Unlike most contemporary readings of anorexia, this book offers an original insight into the creative process inherent to the pathology, which the author calls Writing Size Zero. Body of writing and writing of the body, as found in western and post-colonial texts, delineate an in-between space producing new epistemologies. Through a close reading of the semiotics of self-starvation, the author debunks the myth of anorexia as a mental disease of the West and insists on the variety of expressions and figurations inherent to the pathology. By providing a meaning to self-starvation, writing gives anorexia its ethics.
