Book www capitalisme fr

Download or read book www capitalisme fr written by Alain Minc and published by Grasset. This book was released on 2000-09-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Code of Capital

Download or read book The Code of Capital written by Katharina Pistor and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else. In this revealing book, Katharina Pistor argues that the law selectively "codes" certain assets, endowing them with the capacity to protect and produce private wealth. With the right legal coding, any object, claim, or idea can be turned into capital - and lawyers are the keepers of the code. Pistor describes how they pick and choose among different legal systems and legal devices for the ones that best serve their clients' needs, and how techniques that were first perfected centuries ago to code landholdings as capital are being used today to code stocks, bonds, ideas, and even expectations--assets that exist only in law. A powerful new way of thinking about one of the most pernicious problems of our time, The Code of Capital explores the different ways that debt, complex financial products, and other assets are coded to give financial advantage to their holders. This provocative book paints a troubling portrait of the pervasive global nature of the code, the people who shape it, and the governments that enforce it."--Provided by publisher.

Download or read book Common written by Pierre Dardot and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the globe, contemporary protest movements are contesting the oligarchic appropriation of natural resources, public services, and shared networks of knowledge and communication. These struggles raise the same fundamental demand and rest on the same irreducible principle: the common. In this exhaustive account, Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval show how the common has become the defining principle of alternative political movements in the 21st century. In societies deeply shaped by neoliberal rationality, the common is increasingly invoked as the operative concept of practical struggles creating new forms of democratic governance. In a feat of analytic clarity, Dardot and Laval dissect and synthesize a vast repository on the concept of the commons, from the fields of philosophy, political theory, economics, legal theory, history, theology, and sociology. Instead of conceptualizing the common as an essence of man or as inherent in nature, the thread developed by Dardot and Laval traces the active lives of human beings: only a practical activity of commoning can decide what will be shared in common and what rules will govern the common's citizen-subjects. This re-articulation of the common calls for nothing less than the institutional transformation of society by society: it calls for a revolution.

Book Political Economy of Capitalisms

Download or read book Political Economy of Capitalisms written by Robert Boyer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-03 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the English language translation of the French publication Économie Politique des Capitalismes. Research in this book presents institutional and historical macroeconomics, through an analysis of wage-labour nexus, innovation systems, monetary and financial systems, integration into the world economy, formation of economic policy configurations, and the history of economic theories. In doing so, the book addresses how and why economic regularities change in long run, and why do macroeconomic adjustments differ across countries within the same historical period. It shows how institutional changes that have occurred since the 1970s and the research on the transformation of the American and French capitalism, have led to the emergence of a research agenda, known as Régulation Theory. Readers would understand the permanent transformations of capitalism and its crises, given the book’s inclusion of long-term historical studies, systematic international comparisons for the contemporary period, and the exploration of the institutional and social foundations of microeconomics which has led to the evolution of various brands of capitalism. This translated work includes a Foreword by Associate Professor Elsa Lafaye de Micheaux and Professor Thomas Lamarche.

Download or read book Woke washing written by Audrey Millet and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [Payot.ch]

Book Neither Right Nor Left

  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780691006291

Download or read book Neither Right Nor Left written by Zeev Sternhell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few books on European history in recent memory have caused such controversy and commotion," wrote Robert Wohl in 1991 in a major review of Neither Right nor Left. Listed by Le Monde as one of the forty most important books published in France during the 1980s, this explosive work asserts that fascism was an important part of the mainstream of European history, not just a temporary development in Germany and Italy but a significant aspect of French culture as well. Neither right nor left, fascism united antibourgeois, antiliberal nationalism, and revolutionary syndicalist thought, each of which joined in reflecting the political culture inherited from eighteenth-century France. From the first, Sternhell's argument generated strong feelings among people who wished to forget the Vichy years, and his themes drew enormous public attention in 1994, as Paul Touvier was condemned for crimes against humanity and a new biography probed President Mitterand's Vichy connections. The author's new preface speaks to the debates of 1994 and reinforces the necessity of acknowledging the past, as President Chirac has recently done on France's behalf.

Book The Other Rise of the Novel in Eighteenth Century French Fiction

Download or read book The Other Rise of the Novel in Eighteenth Century French Fiction written by Olivier Delers and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the novel paradigm—and the underlying homology between the rise of a bourgeois middle class and the coming of age of a new literary genre—continues to influence the way we analyze economic discourse in the eighteenth-century French novel. Characters are often seen as portraying bourgeois values, even when historiographical evidence points to the virtual absence of a self-conscious and coherent bourgeoisie in France in the early modern period. Likewise, the fact that the nobility was a dynamic and diverse group whose members had learned to think in individualistic and meritocratic terms as a result of courtly politics is often ignored. The Other Rise of the Novel calls for a radical revision of how realism, the language of self-interest and commercial exchanges, and idealized noble values interact in the early modern novel. It focuses on two novels from the seventeenth century, Furetière’s Roman bourgeois and Lafayette’s Princesse de Clèves and four novels from the eighteenth century, Prévost’s Manon Lescaut, Graffigny’s Lettres d’une Péruvienne, Rousseau’s La Nouvelle Héloïse and Sade’s Les infortunes de la vertu. It argues that eighteenth-century French fiction does not reflect material culture mimetically and that character action is best analyzed by focusing on the social and discursive exchanges staged by the text, rather than by trying to create parallels between specific behavior and actual historical changes. The novel produces its own reality by transforming characters and their stories into alternative social models, different articulations of how individuals should define their economic relations to others. The representation of interpersonal relations often highlights personal conceptions of private interest that cannot be easily reconciled with the traditional narrative of a transition towards economic modernity. Realism, then, is not only about verisimilar storytelling and psychological depth: it is an epistemological questioning about the type of access to reality that a particular genre can give its readers.

Book A Divided Republic

Download or read book A Divided Republic written by Emile Chabal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an original and sophisticated historical interpretation of contemporary French political culture. Until now, there have been few attempts to understand the political consequences of the profound geopolitical, intellectual and economic changes that France has undergone since the 1970s. However, Emile Chabal's detailed study shows how passionate debates over citizenship, immigration, colonial memory, the reform of the state and the historiography of modern France have galvanised the French elite and created new spaces for discussion and disagreement. Many of these debates have coalesced around two political languages - republicanism and liberalism - both of which structure the historical imagination and the symbolic vocabulary of French political actors. The tension between these two political languages has become the central battleground of contemporary French politics. It is around these two poles that politicians, intellectuals and members of France's vast civil society have tried to negotiate the formidable challenges of ideological uncertainty and a renewed sense of global insecurity.

Book Hendrik de Man and Social Democracy

Download or read book Hendrik de Man and Social Democracy written by Tommaso Milani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates the intellectual and political trajectory of the Belgian theorist Hendrik de Man (1885-1953) by examining the impact that his works and activism had on Western European social democracy between the two world wars. Based on multinational archival research, the book highlights how the idea of economic planning became part of a wider effort to address an ideological crisis within the socialist movement and revitalise the latter amidst the Great Depression. A heavily controversial figure also because of his subsequent involvement in Belgian wartime collaboration, de Man played a pivotal role in challenging traditional Marxist assumptions about the role of the state under capitalism and in promoting transnational exchanges between unorthodox social democrats across Europe. Starting from de Man’s experience in World War I, the book analyses his departure from Marxism, his elaboration of an alternative social democratic paradigm, his entry in Belgian politics as well as the reception of his thought in France and Britain.

Book Com n

Download or read book Com n written by Christian Laval and published by Editorial GEDISA. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Governance Industry and Labour Markets in Britain and France

Download or read book Governance Industry and Labour Markets in Britain and France written by Robert Salais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together well-known scholars from a wide range of disciplines to provide a superb analytical and historical overview of how state policy has affected established economic and labour market systems in France and Britain. The contributors to this book explore some crucial questions: * how 'dirigiste' was the French state in reality * why was state intervention more acceptable in France than in Britain * how do the differences in state intervention help to explain the respective economic performances of the two countries since the second world war? The book draws on hitherto unpublished primary research by scholars in economic and social history, industrial relations, economics, law, political science, sociology and social policy. As such, it is a timely and welcome intervention into debates concerning the politics of modern labour markets specifically and the role of the state in economic modernization more widely. It will have strong appeal to researchers and students in several discplines.
