Book excerpt: The steady development of queer theory over the last two decades has provided useful analytical tools and the will to dismiss the watchdog of heteronormativity. Modes of reading have evolved, as this volume of FLS amply attests. Following Bill Edmiston’s introduction to the volume — a concise and informative history of queer theory — the fifteen articles reveal, not surprisingly, significant diversity. One deals with queerness in the context of medieval writing where allegorical and euphemistic expression were understood to be irreconcilable. Another treats translations in Early Modern France of an Ovidian fable that had an inconvenient lesbian dimension. Rousseau’s fixation on his bottom (e.g., for spankings) points to a queer streak, while Gautier’s Mademoiselle de Maupin enhances the theme of sexual misidentity with ornamental figures. The queerness of Sand’s La Mare au diable emerges in the course of a contrasexual reading. A musicologist investigates the possibility of a lesbian esthetics of music in a work by Erik Satie, while a literary scholar finds evidence of Proust’s “outing” in Jean Santeuil. Other articles address the sense of gender transformation wrought by sodomy, a revised view on the writing subject in Jean Genet’s fiction, the queerness of heterosexuality in the works of Michel Houellebecq, and recurring motifs in recent fiction produced by “gay Paris.” Two of the articles treat activism and esthetics in film.

Après un groupe de contributions introductives définissant des positions théoriques différentes, voire opposées, cet ouvrage développe la réflexion autour de quatre thèmes : 1) Commandes, productions et usages de la carte ; 2) Dénaturaliser les cartes : 1e pouvoir et l'autorité ; 3) Langage graphique et construction du savoir ; 4) Cartographier l'Autre. Il se poursuit par un groupe d'interrogations transversales sur les précurseurs du langage graphique de la cartographie statistique des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ; sur la valeur rhétorique de 1a carte, les modalités collectives de construction de l'identité et de l'altérité et des politiques publiques territoriales ; à propos des politiques urbaines, sur la force de l'instrument graphique et en même temps sa difficulté, voire son incapacité, à dire la complexité du social. Trois contributions tirent enfin quelques leçons d'ensemble : la première établit une comparaison entre les traditions cartographiques anglo-saxonne et française ; la seconde, sans nier les inconvénients, voire les risques, de l'outil cartographique, insiste sur son apport aux processus de la cognition géographique ; la dernière, interrogeant les travaux de sciences politiques en priorité mais pas exclusivement, pose la question de la redondance de l'image par rapport au texte et surtout du risque d'une cartographie d'assignation, de " portrait du roi ".

Book excerpt: Building on recent investigations into affinities between early German Romanticism and French post-structuralism, this study brings together the work of Jacques Derrida with the writings of one of early Romanticisms most important theorists, Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772-1801), better known as Novalis. In contrast to recent criticism, which traces the historical path from Romanticism to modern theory in broad strokes, this book undertakes comparative readings of Novaliss and Derridas texts on literature and philosophy. The book focuses on the significance both writers accord to paradox and argues that readings which are attuned to paradox can better appreciate the proximity of Romanticism and post- structuralism. As well as their affirmation of paradox, the texts of Novalis and Derrida testify to a profound respect for the Other, and the close readings of selected texts reveal remarkable similarities in their thinking on literature, philosophy and representation, and on the intricate interrelation between language, identity and desire.

The authors have been encouraged to examine, rigorously and in depth, the theoretical basis of CSCW. With contributions from field leaders in the United Kingdom, France, Scandinavia, Mexico, and the United States, this volume offers an exciting overview of the cutting edge of research and theory. It constitutes a solid foundation for the rapidly coalescing field of social informatics. Divided into three parts, this volume covers social theory, design theory, and the sociotechnical system with respect to CSCW. The first set of chapters looks at ways of rethinking basic social categories with the development of distributed collaborative computing technology--concepts of the group, technology, information, user, and text. The next section concentrates more on the lessons that can be learned at the design stage given that one wants to build a CSCW system incorporating these insights--what kind of work does one need to do and how is understanding of design affected? The final part looks at the integration of social and technical in the operation of working sociotechnical systems. Epstein urges a return to the common law principles of individual autonomy that permit all persons to improve their position through trade, contract, and bargain, free of government constraint.
