Book Solutions to Thirty Eight Questions

Download or read book Solutions to Thirty Eight Questions written by Hildegard of Bingen and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014-04-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the least studied of Hildegard of Bingen’s writings, Solutions to Thirty-Eight Questions is translated in this volume into English for the first time from the original Latin. In this work of exegesis, Hildegard (1098–1179) resolves thorny passages of Scripture, theological questions, and two issues in hagiographic texts. Solutions to Thirty-Eight Questions joins Hildegard’s Homilies on the Gospels, which were directed to her nuns, as evidence of the seer’s exegetical writing as well as her authority as an exegete. The twelfth-century saint wrote in standard genres of exegesis—homilies and solutiones—and her interpretations of Scripture were widely sought, including by male audiences.

Book The Work of Jacques Le Goff and the Challenges of Medieval History

Download or read book The Work of Jacques Le Goff and the Challenges of Medieval History written by Miri Rubin and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on medieval history inspired by, and engaging with, the work of Jacques Le Goff. The essays in this volume arise from the proceedings of a conference held in 1994 to celebrate the life and work of the eminent French medievalist Jacques Le Goff. Set within thematic sections -popular religion and heresy, the body, royalty andits mystique, intellectuals in medieval society, and others -many of the challenges raised by Le Goff are reassessed and reapproached. There is an explicit historiographical focus in a section on the reception and influence of Le Goff, with particular reference to the Annales school of history with which he is strongly identified; the volume also indicates the problems which animate current research in medieval studies, especially in certain areas of social and cultural history. MIRI RUBIN is Professor of History, Queen Mary, University of London. Contributors: ALEXANDER MURRAY, PETER BILLER, ANDRÉ VAUCHEZ, R.I. MOORE, OTTO GERHARD OEXLE, LESTER K. Book Pour une histoire des Alpes Moyen Age et Temps Modernes

Download or read book Pour une histoire des Alpes Moyen Age et Temps Modernes written by Jean-François Bergier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alps, as Professor Bergier shows in this selection of his work, should not be considered an impassable barrier, nor an isolated region, but rather as an integral part of the history of Europe. The lowlanders’ typical view of the mountains as fearful heights to be crossed, and the image of those who lived there as existing in a delicate balance with nature, are part only of the story. These articles are particularly concerned with transalpine traffic, and the different routes it took in response to changing circumstances in the lands to south and north, and with the exploitation and use of mountain resources. A number aim also to identify the particularities of the mountain way of life, and its social and political organisation.

Book Words of the Living God

Download or read book Words of the Living God written by Pim Valkenberg and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to find an answer to the question: how did St. Thomas Aquinas (1224/5 - 1274) use Holy Scripture in his theology? Distinguishing between a quantitative method for determining the place of Scripture in a theological text, and a qualitative method for determining its functions, the author of this study concludes that Aquinas does not only use Scripture in several functions in his theology, but first and foremost regards Scripture as source and framework of theology itself. While an analysis of Aquinas' texts on the resurrection of Christ shows the functioning of Scripture as a factor within the text, but also as a precondition for the text, a series of comparisons between different subject matters, literary genres and sources show that the importance of Scripture is a characteristic of Aquinas' theology in its entirety, even at places where Scripture is not quoted at all. This conclusion does not only show the ecumenical importance of Aquinas' theology, but also the relevance of his theological manner of reading Scripture for modern theologians.

Book Medieval Answers to Modern Questions

Download or read book Medieval Answers to Modern Questions written by Neil J Smith and published by . This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular perceptions, the European Middle Ages were a fertile intellectual period in history. The groundwork laid by scholastic philosophers of the Middle Ages made the advancements of the Renaissance possible. Given the myriad of social and political questions confronting us today, the author sent via time machine a letter to a scholastic philosopher to obtain the medieval perspective on these pressing modern problems. This book is the response that he received. It addresses a wide range of modern issues from a medieval perspective, ranging from the political (such as questions relating to socialism, immigration, and the right to bear arms) to the deeply personal (such as abortion and transgender rights). The book is written in the same question and answer style used by the scholastics, and is well researched with over 200 citations to medieval and classical sources. Book Scientific Sources and Teaching Contexts Throughout History Problems and Perspectives

Download or read book Scientific Sources and Teaching Contexts Throughout History Problems and Perspectives written by Alain Bernard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the textual, social, cultural, practical and institutional environments to which the expression “teaching and learning contexts” refers. It reflects on the extent to which studying such environments helps us to better understand ancient or modern sources, and how notions of “teaching” and “learning” are to be understood. Tackling two problems: the first, is that of certain sources of scientific knowledge being studied without taking into account the various “contexts” of transmission that gave this knowledge a long-lasting meaning. The second is that other sources are related to teaching and learning activities, but without being too precise and demonstrative about the existence and nature of this “teaching context”. In other words, this book makes clear what is meant by “context” and highlights the complexity of the practice hidden by the words “teaching” and “learning”. Divided into three parts, the book makes accessible teaching and learning situations, presents comparatist approaches, and emphasizes the notion of teaching as projects embedded in coherent treatises or productions.
