Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: For the first time, the present commentary brings together all relevant aspects necessary to understand and appreciate this late portion of Old Testament Scripture: textual criticism; detailed philological and literary analysis; the text's two-fold historical context in its Hellenistic environment, on the one hand, and in the biblical tradition on the other; and ultimately the very innovative theology of the book of Wisdom. Aspects of the book's reception history as well as hermeneutical questions round off the commentary on the text.

Book The Exodus Story in the Wisdom of Solomon

Download or read book The Exodus Story in the Wisdom of Solomon written by Samuel Cheon and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exemplary study presents the hermeneutical principles and theological tendencies of Pseudo-Solomon's biblical interpretation of the Exodus story in the Wisdom of Solomon. Why and how did the author interpret the Exodus story? What is the socio-historical function of his interpretation? Through a comparison with corresponding biblical and extra-biblical texts, the text's dominant interpretative technique is seen to be the reshaping of the biblical story, as the author freely handles the biblical material, ignoring the literary intention or flow of the biblical accounts. Cheon argues that this interpretation was intended to provide hope and consolation for the Alexandrian Jewish community soon after a severe persecution during the reign of Gaius Caligula (37-41 CE).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1990 Roland Murphy's Tree of Life has been a standard introduction to the wisdom literature of the Bible. Now The Tree of Life is available in a third edition, complete with a new preface by the author and a special supplement that surveys the latest developments in wisdom research. This superb study thoroughly explores the wisdom writings of the Bible, interpreting this literature in a way that illumines the development of Israel's search for wisdom throughout its tumultuous history. Murphy looks at each wisdom book individually -- Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiasticus, and Wisdom of Solomon -- and adds to them a discussion of wisdom from other parts of the Old Testament. His careful investigations expose the various guises that wisdom adopts -- the "fear of the Lord," moral formation, the universality of human experience, the mysteries of creation, and others.

Book Divine Judgement and Divine Benevolence in the Book of Wisdom

Download or read book Divine Judgement and Divine Benevolence in the Book of Wisdom written by Moyna McGlynn and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly interest in the apocryphal Book of Wisdom has grown over the last fifty years. In addition to the main commentaries, several literary studies have been produced on sections of the text, giving new and richer insights. Moyna McGlynn examines the interwoven themes of divine judgement and divine benevolence as they are presented in the text of Wisdom. The full extent and interplay between these themes is only revealed by a literary reading of the whole text. This reading examines the poetic techniques, structures, vocabulary, verbal repetitions, and the questions the author has employed to provide a framework for a theology of justice and mercy.Further study of these themes leads to reflections upon God as creator and humans as creatures, the kindness of God in the gift of divine wisdom, and the formation and protection of Israel as the paradigm community with responsibility for teaching and demonstrating the knowledge of God to the world. These twin themes, then, provide us with an integrated and coherent reading of the text of Wisdom, and offer a new insight into the role of Israel and Jewish self-awareness just prior to the formation of rabbinic Judaism and Christianity. The Book of Wisdom falls naturally into four, major sub-divisions, with a fifth central section providing the theodicy which underpins the action and reflection of the other four. Moyna McGlynn has retained this five-fold division for her analysis.A brief Appendix, at the close of the book, outlines Wisdom's history and reception in the Jewish and Christian communities.
