Book excerpt: Cities Connection Project (CCP) was born with the aim to establish a network of cultural connections between Barcelona and other European cities with an important architectural tradition. A series of architecture exhibitions are the focus of this project that also offers other events such as conferences, meetings among universities, and the desire to create synergies among the professional teams involved. Barcelona has become a worldwide recognized brand, in wich architecture and urbanism have played a key role. One of the main elements of the “Barcelona Model” is the quality of public space, and this reason has impulsed Open Space Connection (OSC), a branch of CCP, but focused in the field of public spaces in metropolitan areas. Through the first edition of Open Space Connection, the curators aim to open the reflection about two differents methodologies of thinking public spaces and landscape architecture: one of them in the the French Swiss Region of Lake Leman and the other one in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

Book The Urban Garden City

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sandrine Glatron
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2018-03-24
  • ISBN : 3319727338
  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book The Urban Garden City written by Sandrine Glatron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an interdisciplinary overview of the role of gardens in cities throughout different historical periods. It shows that, thanks to various forms of spatial and social organisation, gardens are part of the material urban landscape, biodiversity, symbolic and social shape, and assets of our cities, and are increasingly becoming valued as an ‘order’ to follow. Gardens have long been part of the development of cities, serving different purposes through the ages: shaping neighborhoods to promote health or hygiene, introducing aesthetic or biological elements, gathering the citizens around a social purpose, and providing food and diversity in times of crisis. Highlighting examples that can serve as the basis for comparisons, the chapters offer a brief panorama of experiences and models of gardens in the city – in the European context and in various periods of history – while also discussing issues related to garden cities, urban agriculture and community gardens. The contributors are university staff from various disciplines in the human and life sciences, in discourse with other academics but also with practitioners who are interested in experiences with urban gardens and in promoting an awareness of their spatial, social and ‘philosophical’ goals throughout history. The book will appeal to urban geographers, sociologists and historians, but also to urban ecologists dealing with ecosystem services, biodiversity and sustainable development in cities. From a more operational standpoint, landscape planners and architects are sure to find many of the projects enlightening and inspirational.

Book Rewilding Food and the Self

Download or read book Rewilding Food and the Self written by Tristan Fournier and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to the return to nature movement that is very much in vogue in contemporary European societies, by examining the place of food and eating in the "rewilding" process. It is divided into three parts, each of which consists of conversations between social scientists, with fieldwork collected from across Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland. The first part focuses on the ways in which the hunter-gatherer livelihood has been transformed into a resilient, simpler and ecological way of life. It is dedicated to hunting and identifies the contexts in which large wild game meat is consumed and the reasons why such a product is still valued today. The second part shows how some practices that aim to reconnect with natural processes are developing within a market economy. Case studies on natural wine and fasting retreats help us to identify the promises that producers and promoters are relying on in order to disseminate them. Finally, the third part considers how this process of rewilding food is expressed in post-modernity. By focusing on two normative frameworks in which the rhetoric of the wild is mobilized although it is not expected to be in these terms – urbanity and the gender order – the goal is to understand the extent to which referring to the wild in food discourses and practices contributes to challenging our identities, and to creating possible forms of emancipation. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in food cultures, human nature relationships, and sustainable diets.
