Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many products of medieval and renaissance culture – literature, music, political ideology, social and governmental structures, the fine arts, forms of devotional piety, and also the social, political and literary self-representation of rulers – found their best expression in the context of the courts of greater and lesser princes. This second volume on princes and princely culture between 1450 and 1650 – the first was published in 2003 as volume 118/1 in this series – contains twelve essays. These are focused on England under Edward IV, Henry VII and Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and under James I and Charles I. The late fifteenth-century imperial court is treated in a piece on Matthias I Corvinus. The courts of Italy are represented by chapters on those of the Po Valley, the Medici of Florence, the Papal courts of Pius II and Julius II, and of Naples. Spanish court culture is discussed in contributions on Charles V, Philip II, and on Philip IV.
Download or read book Janello Torriani and the Spanish Empire written by Cristiano Zanetti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janello Torriani, known in the Spanish-speaking world as Juanelo Turriano (Cremona, Italy ca. 1500 – Toledo, Spain 1585), is the greatest among Renaissance inventors and constructors of machines. Contemporary literates and mathematicians celebrated Janello Torriani and his creations in their writings. It is striking how such fame turned into nearly complete oblivion, leaving only a few clues of a blurred and distorted memory dispersed here and there. This book wishes to show the central role that artisans formed in the Vitruvian tradition played in demonstrating through practical mathematics an increasing and positive control over Nature, a step rooted in humanist culture and foundational for the understanding of those historical processes known as the Scientific and the Industrial Revolutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek and Roman novels can be seen as an important transitional moment in the trajectory from performance to reading, from oralism to textuality, that has underpinned the history of discourse in European consciousness since the 5th century BC. In different and intriguing ways, they explore the contrast, tension, conflict, competition or dialogue between modes of discourse, which frame the novel's concern with identity and self-fashioning, as well as advertising innovation more generally. This volume brings together an international group of scholars interested in ancient and modern constructions of orality and writing and how they are reflected and manipulated in the ancient novel. The essays deal not only with questions of genre, oral poetics and traditions, but also with how various ways of pitting or collapsing modes of representation can become loaded articulations of wider world-views, of cultural, literary, epistemological anxieties and aspirations. The contributors focus in particular on issues surrounding theatricality, gender identity, rhetorical performance, epistolarity, monumentality and power in the ancient novel.

… It is with great enthusiasm that Kermes supported this initiative hosting the studies, as though these were part of a conference, ‘ideal’ in that it never took place physically, but very much real in terms of the international plurality of its contributions, presented here thanks to lively exchange of information across frontiers … This publication is the fruit of a perfect and exemplary collaboration between curators, conservators and scientists brought together from all countries… The publication here before us provides a number of answers – let us be brave and use the word ‘definitive’ – to questions which have long been an issue of debate … (Pierre Rosenberg de l’Académie française, Président-directeur honoraire du Musée du Louvre) This volume of the journal Kermes devoted to the meticulous technical analysis of several works by Nicolas Poussin, reveals the wealth of knowledge acquired through the implementation of new methods of physico-chemical analysis taken together with the detailed investigation of the handling and materials deployed during the process of creating the work of art. A number of different means have been employed in order to investigate in the greatest detail the nature of a particular pigment, its impurities, the effects of the addition of a medium as well as the effects created by mixtures … (Philippe Walter, Directeur du Laboratoire d’archéologie moléculaire et structurale, CNRS-UMR 8820, Université Pierre et Marie Curie) indice/Index: speciale – NICOLAS POUSSIN. Download or read book Townscapes in Transition written by Carmen M. Enss and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did urban Italy come to look the way it does today? This collection of essays assembles recent studies in architectural history and theory exploring the historical paradigms guiding architecture and landscape design between the world wars. The authors explore physical changes in townscapes and landscapes, covering a wide range of architectural designs from strict modernist solutions to variations of regionalism, mediterraneanism and national style from all over Italy. Specifically, the volume explains how conservation, restoration and town planning for historic areas led to the production of heritage, and elucidates the role played by architects like Marcello Piacentini, Innocenzo Sabbatini, Mario De Renzi and Giulio Ulisse Arata.
Download or read book GLI EBREI IN ITALIA written by Paolo Orano and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
