Book Fascism and the Italians of Montreal

Download or read book Fascism and the Italians of Montreal written by Filippo Salvatore and published by Guernica Editions. This book was released on 1998 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of interviews is an absorbing autobiography of the Italian community of Montreal, and its encounters with important events in Canada and in Europe from 1992 to 1945: from Mussolini's March on Rome to the Concordat between the Catholic Church and the Italian state; from the war in Ethiopia to the Pact of Steel signed by Mussolini and Hitler; from the Spanish civil war to the declaration of war between Italy and Canada. The reader will discover sensational revelations about the hundreds of Italian Canadians who were interned by the Canadian government during the Second World War -- often on trumped-up charges and without a single shred of evidence against them. These interviews recount the Italian community's passions and sorrows, its exuberant love of life and its struggle for survival and dignity in America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book In Italics written by Antonio D'Alfonso and published by Guernica Editions. This book was released on 1996 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet and novelist, Antonio D'Alfonso has been writing essays and giving in-depth interviews for twenty years. This collection contains the most important of these texts which have been reworked into a coherent entity. D'Alfonso discusses the importance of ethnic awareness which he places at the antipodes of territorial nationalism for which ethnicity is too often mistaken. The themes raised in this eclectic book relate to general culture, language, literature, film, and publishing (he founded Guernica Editions in 1978). Though it is the Italian perspective (which the author prefers to call Italic) that is favored, the themes and concepts developed are applicable to other cultures and countries. In Italics is a polemical and unblushing defense for the individual's right to a collective Imaginary, no matter which country one lives in.

Book The Camp

  • Author : Colman Hogan
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2021-02-03
  • ISBN : 1527565513
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book The Camp written by Colman Hogan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The camp is nothing if not diverse: in kind, scope, and particularity; in sociological and juridical configuration; in texture, iconography, and political import. Adjectives of camp specificity embrace a spectrum from extermination and concentration, to detention, migration, deportation, and refugee camps. And while the geographic range covered by contributors is hardly global, it is broad: Chile, Rwanda, Canada, the US, Central Europe, Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, France and Spain. And yet—is to so characterize the camp to run the risk of diffusing what in origin is a concentration into a paratactical series of “identity particularisms”? While The Camp does not seek to antithetically promulgate a universalist vision, it does aim to explore the imbrication of the particular and the universal, to analyze the structure of a camp or camps, and to call attention the role of the listener in the construction of the testimony. For, by naming what cannot be said, is not every narrative of internment and exclusion a potential site of agency, articulating the inner splitting of language that Giorgio Agamben defines as the locus of testimony: “to bear witness is to place oneself in one’s own language in the position of those who have lost it, to establish oneself in a living language as if it were dead, or in a dead language as if it were living.”

Book Inside the Historical Film

Download or read book Inside the Historical Film written by Bruno Ramirez and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From cinema's beginnings filmmakers have turned to the past for their stories, so much so that in many ways our historical culture is shaped more in the movie theatre than in the classroom. Inside the Historical Film argues how and why film can enrich our understanding of the past. Bruno Ramirez discusses a wide range of films, from various historical and national contexts, pointing to the role that film-crafts play in translating historical events into cinematic language. He takes the reader through the process of conception, research, design, and production of several films that he researched and co-wrote, explaining the decisions that were made to best convey historical knowledge. The practice-based quality at the core of Ramirez's analysis is further enhanced by conversations with world-renowned film directors, including Denys Arcand, Constantin Costa-Gavras, Deepa Mehta, Renzo Rossellini, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, and Margarethe von Trotta. Grounded in an appreciation for the interpretative value of making films and cinema's ability to reach large public audiences at personal and emotional levels, Inside the Historical Film seeks to understand historical films as both creative works and multi-layered representations of the past.

  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Le fascisme italien written by Serge Berstein and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
