CHAPTER II PERIOD OF DOCUMENTATION--COMMENCING ABOUT THE SPRING OF 1915 Some Soldier Types In War Novels We now come to those books which relate much more objectively than those referred to previously, the facts connected directly or indirectly with the prosecution of the war. As the conflict progressed and assumed formidable proportions, changing its character from that of a war of nations in which national and political aims strove for mastery, to that of a world war in which great human principles were involved, it was both inevitable and imperative that the lyric and epic notes should die down. In the spring of 1915, the more intelligent had already realized how helpless are strong emotions to solve great problems; that the old "cliches" had served their purpose and that it was time to discard them; what the seriousness of the hour demanded then was a deep, clear, practical, sober apprehension of the realities of the hour. The most immediate interest, of course, was focussed on the soldiers who were waging the war. Some men of letters soon began to make use of what had been for many years the most common medium of art, the novel. We must, however, beg leave to draw here a sharp distinction between two kinds of novels dealing with the war. The one we will call War-Novel proper, in which the authors work up documents or personal experiences in order to make us see more deeply the significance of war itself; they apply the realistic theory of art which has been so well defined in Maupassant's Preface to Pierre et Jean; their aim is to rearrange facts in a manner which is more exact perhaps than reality but more indicative of the internal order of things, and with a view to bringing out more convincingly than mere contingencies have...

Download or read book Nationalism and Classicism written by Athena S. Leoussi and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative study of the national significance of the classical revival which marked English and French art during the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that the main focus of artists' interest in classical Greece, was the body of the Greek athlete. It explains this interest, first, by artists' contact with the art of Pheidias and Polycletus which portrayed it; and second, by the claim, made by physical anthropologists, the classical body typified the race of the European nations.

Book The Social Dimensions of Fiction

Download or read book The Social Dimensions of Fiction written by Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and published by Konzeption Empirische Literaturwissenschaft. This book was released on 1993 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a comparative study of nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French Canadian novel prefaces, a previously unexplored literary topic. As a study in Comparative Literature - with the application of a specific literary framework and methodology - the study conforms to theoretical and methodological postulates formulated in and prescribed by this framework when applied. This a priori postulate necessitates that the research on and the presentation of the Canadian novel preface be carried out in a specific manner, as follows. First, the study will establish the hypothesis that the preface to nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French-Canadian novels is a genre in its own right. This hypothesis will rest on the following: 1) a taxonomical survey of related terms meaning "preface"; 2) a survey of secondary Iiterature of works dealing with the preface; 3) a discussion of the theoretical framework and methodology of the Empirical Theory of Literature and its appropriateness for the study of the preface; and 4) a discussion of the process of the compilation of the corpus of nineteenth-century Canadian novel prefaces (Chapter one). In a second step, the theoretical postulate outlined in the hypothesis will be put into practice by the development and production of a preface typology (Chapter two). In a third step, further tenets of the Empirical Theory of Literature will be tested on the corpus of the prefaces (Chapter three). In a fourth step, the prefaces will be analysed following the tenets formulated in and prescribed by the systemic framework applied (Chapter four).

Book Beckett in Black and Red

Download or read book Beckett in Black and Red written by Alan Warren Friedman and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1934, Nancy Cunard published Negro: An Anthology, which brought together more than two hundred contributions, serving as a plea for racial justice, an exposé of black oppression, and a hymn to black achievement and endurance. The anthology stands as a virtual ethnography of 1930s racial, historic, artistic, political, and economic culture. Samuel Beckett, a close friend of the flamboyant and unconventional Cunard, translated nineteen of the contributions for Negro, constituting Beckett's largest single prose publication. Beckett traditionally has been viewed as an apolitical postmodernist rather than as a willing and major participant in Negro's racial, political, and aesthetic agenda. In Beckett in Black and Red, Friedman reevaluates Beckett's contribution to the project, reconciling the humanism of his life and work and valuing him as a man deeply engaged with the greatest public issues of his time. Cunard believed racial justice and equality could be achieved only through Communism, and thus "black" and "red" were inextricably linked in her vision. Beckett's contribution to Negro demonstrates his support for Cunard's interest in surrealism as well as her political causes, including international republicanism and anti-fascism. Only in recent years have Cunard's ideas begun to receive serious consideration. Beckett in Black and Red radically revalues Cunard and reconceives Beckett. His work in Negro shows a commitment to cultural and individual equality and worth that Beckett consistently demonstrated throughout his life, both in personal relationships and in his writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first comprehensive study in English of Flaubert's least well-known masterpiece, the final version of his Tentation de saint Antoine (1874). By assuming no prior knowledge of the work, its versions, debates, or contexts, Mary Orr opens up new readings of the seven tableaux which comprise it, and new ways of interpreting the whole. Newcomers and specialists are therefore invited to contemplate afresh this central work in Flaubert's oeuvre and in nineteenth-century French studies." "For specialists in nineteenth-century French literature and in Flaubert studies, this book challenges received critical wisdom on a number of fronts. Flaubert's 'realism', 'anti-clericalism', and 'orientalism' are all remapped through the text's unlikely protagonist-visionary speaking to the religious and scientific controversies of nineteenth-century France."--BOOK JACKET.
