Book The Painter Le Corbusier

Download or read book The Painter Le Corbusier written by Tim Benton and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar- tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre. The fascinating photographs by Manuel Bougot capture the special atmosphere of the villa Le Corbusier's painting is lesser known but was formative for his lifelong preoccupation with polychromy After extensive renovation work until 2021, E 1027, as well as the Cabanon, is open to the public again

Book Legacy

Download or read book Legacy written by Lukas Feireiss and published by Frame Publishers. This book was released on 2018 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generational dialogues between 40 world-renowned creatives exploring how the creative legacy of previous generations is being reinterpreted over time. Description What is this phenomenon we call ‘legacy’? This intangible inheritance that we eventually leave for our posterity? Is it the creative and intellectual heritage that one generation passes on to the next? Conceived by Lukas Feireiss, the book at hand tries to probe this open question by engaging in critical dialogue different generations of creatives, connectors and thinkers alike. In some cases, between inherent legacy of parent and child, in many cases between mentor and students, or simply between friends. The more than 40 illustrious contributors to this dialogue derive from an array of fields of knowledge and experience. Their stories often provide very personal insights into their work and life. They also reveal a broader perspective on the overall realms of art, design, architecture, music, literature, photography and curation in the 20th and 21st century. With contributions by Olafur Eliasson and Einar Thorsteinn, Lukas Feireiss and Ai Weiwei, Charlie and Rem Koolhaas, Francesca Gavin and Kerry James Marshall, Sophie Lovell and Dieter Rams, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Yona Friedman, Shumon Basar and Ken Adam, Carson Chan and Phyllis Lambert, Rachel and Daniel Libeskind, Andres Ramirez and Denise Scott Brown, Aric Chen and Arata Isozaki, Ahmir Questlove Thompson and George Clinton and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, the French lyric poets imposed their diction on the theatrical genre and thus illuminated the essence of both poetry and theatre. Ten plays by Victor Hugo, the standard-bearer of the French romantic theatre, and Alfred de Musset, the romantic playwright most frequently performed in France today, are analyzed by Charles Affron to answer the question, "Can the dialetic form of the theatre accommodate the solitary élan of the lyric poet?" As a functional point of departure, he considers those characteristics of lyric poetry—time, voice, and metaphor—which bring us closest to the singular attitudes of Hugo and Musset. Then, examining the texts of Hernani, Les Burgraves, Torquemada, Fantasio, and Lorenzaccio as well as several lesser known plays, Mr. Affron discusses such topics as poetic time, the scope of analogy, theatrical and poetic rhetoric, the guises of the poet-hero, and the manner of sounding the poet's voice upon the stage. Book excerpt: New York Magazines Most Giftable Coffee-Table Books of 2019 One of The Architect's Newspaper's Fall Must-Reads Home-cooking meets highbrow art in this one-of-a-kind cookbook that uses food to create edible interpretations of modern and contemporary sculptures, paintings, architecture, and design. It started as a series of dinner parties that Esther Choi--artist, architectural historian, and self-taught cook--hosted for friends after she stumbled across an elaborate menu crafted for Walter Gropius in 1937. Combining a curiosity about art and design with a deeply felt love of cooking, Choi has assembled a playful collection of recipes that are sure to spark conversation over the dinner table. Featuring Choi's own spectacular photography, these sixty recipes riff off famous artists or architects and the works they are known for. Try Quiche Haring with the Frida Kale-o Salad, or the Robert Rauschenburger followed by Flan Flavin. This cookbook is strikingly beautiful and provocative as it blurs the boundaries between art and everyday life and celebrates food in an engaging and imaginative way.

Book Child Protection in Development

Download or read book Child Protection in Development written by Michael Bourdillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day millions of children in developing countries face adversities of many kinds, yet there is a shortage of sound evidence concerning their plight and an urgent need to identify the most appropriate and effective policy responses from among the multiple approaches that exist. This collection of journal papers aims to engage with researchers and debates in the field so as to understand better some of the numerous risks confronted by children in developing countries. It highlights the complexity of protecting children in various forms of adversity, challenges conventional wisdom about what protects children, demonstrates why it is essential to consult with children to protect them successfully, and suggests that successful protection must be based on strong empirical understanding of the situation and the perspectives of children and communities involved. The contributors are all experienced researchers and practitioners who have worked for many years with children in developing countries. The book offers suggestions for reform of current child protection policies, based on empirical findings around a range of child protection concerns, including children’s work, independent migration, family separation, early marriage, and military occupation. Together, the contributions provide a body of knowledge important to humanitarian and development policy and practice. This book was published as a special issue of Development in Practice.
