Download or read book The Expert Consumer written by Alain Chatriot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work has focused on the politics of consumption and its manifestation in a number of situations. This volume extends these debates, providing a tighter focus and contributing to a noticeable gap in the field that numerous scholars are beginning to turn towards: that is, organizations of consumers themselves who have chosen to speak for all consumers and similar such bodies of experts which act on behalf of consumers. The volume is fortunate in drawing upon a number of scholars who are about to publish major works on the subject, but who are happy to provide summary versions of their work for the volume. The book pays particular attention to specific moments in consumer mobilization and expertise, capturing the range of types of expert consumers across the twentieth century, from ethical consumer groups at the beginning, to intellectuals, housewives, economists and public officials. It addresses questions on the nature of consumer organizing, which bodies can speak for consumers, whether one consumer voice can ever be identified and the relationship between consumption and citizenship. Overview pieces demonstrate the larger narratives involved in the study of the expert consumer, whilst more comparative essays set out the nature of transatlantic exchanges. Other contributions point to the similarities across seemingly different consumption regimes, while case studies of specific organisations and key historical moments draw out the particularities of consumer expertise.
Download or read book The Politics of Consumption written by Martin Daunton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objects and commodities have frequently been studied to assess their position within consumer - or material - culture, but all too rarely have scholars examined the politics that lie behind that culture. This book fills the gap and explores the political and state structures that have shaped the consumer and the nature of his or her consumption. From medieval sumptuary laws to recent debates in governments about consumer protection, consumption has always been seen as a highly political act that must be regulated, directed or organized according to the political agendas of various groups. An internationally renowned group of experts looks at the emergence of the rational consuming individual in modern economic thought, the moral and ideological values consumers have attached to their relationships with commodities, and how the practices and theories of consumer citizenship have developed alongside and within the expanding state. How does consumer identity become available to people and how do they use it? How is consumption negotiated in a dictatorship? Are material politics about state politics, consumer politics, or the relationship between these and consumer practices? From the specifics of the politics of consumption in the French Revolution - what was the status of rum? How complicated did a vinegar recipe have to be before the resultant product qualified as 'luxury'? - to the highly contentious twentieth-century debates over American political economy, this original book traces the relationships among political cultures, consumers and citizenship from the eighteenth century to the present.
Download or read book Ethics and Justice thique et justice written by Peter Kemp and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2017 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main theme of volume 6 of Eco-ethica is "Ethics and Justice" which focuses on the idea of "justice" in a metaphysical, social, and personal sense. Justice is considered as a balance between opposite ambitions in interdependent persons, and as equity in legislation, but not as blind justice. Today it is valuable not only on the national, but also on the cosmopolitan level. Before it became personal justice, the idea of justice was considered metaphysical and social, both in European and Chinese culture. However, in modern times, it is often reduced to a moral duty without meta-ethical responsibility. The last section considers the importance of the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) for clarifying the idea of justice. (Series: Eco-Ethica, Vol. 6) [Subject: Philosophy, Ethics]
Download or read book Marketing critique le consommateur collaborateur en question written by COVA and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Handbook of Global Economic Policy written by Stuart Nagel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-03-10 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by over 20 leading international economists, this book offers "win-win" scenarios to economic problems. As in the other volumes of this set of public policy handbooks, the Handbook of Global Economic Policy employs a unique organizational principle: from viewing economic problems from conservative and liberal perspectives, to developing practical, non-ideological solutions to the problems, and finally testing the solution's feasibility in terms of economic, administrative, political, psychological, legal, international, and technological obstacles. The authors confront conventional wisdom about tradeoffs between unemployment and inflation, economic growth and displaced workers, and capitalism and socialism.

Download or read book Information Obligations and Disinformation of Consumers written by Gert Straetmans and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on recent developments in consumer law, specifically addressing mandatory disclosures and the topical problem of information overload. It provides a comparative analysis based on national reports from countries with common law and civil law traditions in Asia, America and Europe, and presents the reports in the form of chapters that have been drafted on the basis of a questionnaire, and which use the same structure as the questionnaire to allow them to be easily compared. The book starts with an analysis of the basic assumptions underlying the current consumer protection models and examines whether and how consumer models adapt to the new market conditions. The second part addresses the information obligations themselves, first highlighting the differences in the reported countries before narrowing the analysis down to countries with a general pre-contractual information duty, particularly the transparency requirements that often come with such a duty. The next part examines recent developments in the law on food labelling, commercial practices and unfair contract terms in order to identify whether similar traits can be found in European and non-European jurisdictions. The fourth part of the book focuses on specific information obligations in the financial services and e-commerce sectors, discussing the fact that legislators are experimenting with different forms of summary disclosures in these sectors. The final part provides a critical appraisal of the recent developments in consumer information obligations, addressing the question of whether the multiple criticisms from behavioural sciences necessitate abandonment or refinement of current consumer information models in favour of new, more adequate forms of consumer protection, and providing suggestions.
