Book Forest Fire Prevention and Control

Download or read book Forest Fire Prevention and Control written by Tran Van Nao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tran Van Nao (Editor) The last decade has witnessed a seriously increasing incidence of forest fires in many countries. Substantial economic and ecological losses have been incurred, although the estimation of total damage This has been due to the lack assessment has often been inaccurate. of standardized methods for collecting data on fire occurrence and area burnt, as well as information such as the value of the vegetation destroyed and restoration costs, and the implications for recreation, tourism and other social activities. The Mediterranean region was initially considered one of the most vulnerable to forest fires because of its' dry climate and strong winds. No region is immune to forest fires, however, and damage has been especially severe in areas where pine is the predominant species. Although forest fires are normally considered a national problem, they become an international one when they occur in border area forests or when the ecological impacts are felt over long distances. The potential for forest fires exists in every country -unless it is a complete desert - and for this reason, there is a need to promote better understanding of the fires, and closer cooperation between countries in controlling them.

Book Field Guide to the Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction FBP System

Download or read book Field Guide to the Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction FBP System written by Stephen William Taylor and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour System is a systematic methodfor assessing wildland fore behaviour potential. The guide provides a simplified version of the system, presented in tabular format. It was prepared to assist staff in making first approximations of FBP system outputs when computer-based applications arenot available. Quantitative estimates of head fire spread rate, fire intensity, type of fire, and elliptical fire area, perimeter, and perimeter growth rate are provided for sixteen discrete fuel types within five broad groupings (coniferous, deciduous, and mixedwood forests, logging slash, and hrass), covering mostof the major forest fuel types found in Canada. The FBP system is intended to supplement the experience and judgment of fire managers.

Book Fire Behavior in Black Spruce lichen Woodland

Download or read book Fire Behavior in Black Spruce lichen Woodland written by Martin E. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of single point-ignition and line-ignition experimental fires was studied in upland black spruce-lichen woodland stands at Porter Lake in the Caribou Range of the Northwest Territories from June 26-July 8, 1982. The experimental burning project objective was to relate the head fire rate of spread (ROS) in this fuel type to the initial spread index (ISI) component of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System. The experimental fire plots varied in size from 0.02 ha-0.65 ha. and the live tree overstory averaged about 1200 stems/ha and 5.0 m in height. The lichen layer averaged about 3.5 cm in depth. Three point-ignition fires, seven line-ignition fires, and one wildfire were documented over a wide range of burning conditions. A relationship for equilibrium fire spread in black spruce-lichen woodland stands was established.

Book Development and Structure of Prometheus

Download or read book Development and Structure of Prometheus written by Cordy Tymstra and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate, high-resolution fire behavior prediction is a critical component of fire management decision-making before and during fires. Prometheus is a deterministic fire growth simulation model that was developed to help fire managers to understand the probable consequences of their decisions. It uses spatial input data on topography (slope, aspect, and elevation), fuel types, and weather to simulate fire growth by applying Huygens principle of wave propagation to the rate-of-spread predictions from the Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction System of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System. This approach produces detailed fire perimeters at user-specified display time step intervals. Each active vertex along the perimeter has corresponding fire behavior output. Exported fire perimeters are compatible with geographic information systems. Additionally, three interpolation techniques are available to produce optional raster fire behavior outputs. This report documents the structure of the Prometheus model and an assessment of its performance. The report includes a general discussion of approaches to the modeling of fire growth simulation and explains the vector propagation technique used in Prometheus. The limitations and assumptions of applying the model, as well as the most appropriate directions for future research, are also discussed.

Book Weather Guide for the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System

Download or read book Weather Guide for the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System written by B. D. Lawson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This weather guide includes detailed specifications for locating and instrumenting fire weather stations, taking weather observations, and overwintering the Drought Code component of the FWI System. The sensitivity of the FWI System components to weather elements is represented quantitatively. The importance of weather that is not directly observable is discussed in the context of fuel moisture and fire behavior. Current developments in the observation and measurement of fire weather and the forecasting of fire danger are discussed, along with the implications for the reporting of fire weather of increasingly automated fire management information systems.
