C'est aussi en vertu de ces qualites que, de nos jours, nous voyons, de plus en plus, l'homme chercher a tirer parti du meme animal dans differentes occasions pour recueillir a son profit quelque avantage. Tel est le role que, depuis plusieurs annees, on cherche a faire jouer au chien, comme aide de la police des villes, chargee de prevenir ou de constater les delits. Sous ce rapport, il y a lieu de s'etonner que l'on n'ait pas songe plus tot a utiliser dans cette voie les belles qualites du chien, lui, le compagnon de l'homme par excellence et qui, instino tivement, devient le defenseur de son maitre ou le gardien de sa propriete. Les chiens douaniers, au surplus, auraient du, selon nous, faire penser depuis longtemps qu'on pouvait beneficier des services qu'ils pouvaient rendre dans la police. Il y a donc la une nouvelle carriere qui s'ouvre a la gent canine, qui, par les resultats qu'elle a deja procures, nous fait esperer comme proche la generalisation de cette pratique. Si cette institution nouvelle n'a pas jusqu'a maintenant pris plus d'extension, c'est parce que les interesses, commissaires et prefets de police, manquaient de donnees serieuses quant au dressage a faire subir a leurs chiens, ou ont ete decus par l'emploi de sujets soi - disant dresses a des exercices trop compliques ou peu utiles et dont on leur avait dit merveilles. Il ne faut pas, en effet, que dans la police, comme ailleurs, du reste, on demande au chien plus que ce qu'il peut donner; nous ne sommes plus au temps ou les chiens parlaient ou nous n'y sommes pas encore. Il faut, d'un autre cote, laisser les animaux savants aux arenes des cirques et, aux habitues des loges foraines, les Spectacles plus ou moins excessifs ou le chien est l'acteur M. G. De Wael, dont nous avons l'agreable mission de presenter le livre au public, nous semble avoir bien compris ces faits, et dans son manuel de dressage, publie en vue de l'education des chiens policiers, qui est le fruit de son experience personnelle, il se borne, avec raison, a leur apprendre cinq choses essentielles l'obeissance au commandement de rappel, le coucher au gre du maitre, le refus de l'animal d'accepter n'importe quoi d'une main etrangere, puis la quete dans les terrains vagues, les quais, les chantiers, les maisons en construction, les jardins publics, etc., en vue d'y decouvrir le malfaiteur et de le signaler par ses aboiements a ceux qui sont charges de constater ou de prevenir ainsi les delits, enfin, la defense du maitre, le cas echeant. C'est la un programme tres suffisant et qui ne doit pas etre depasse, si l'on ne veut pas faire fausse route et devier du but que l'on se propose d'obtenir avec le chien policier.
