Since returning from Iraq, veteran Mackenzie Parish has tried to find a way back to herself. Out of cash, she hires on at a Wyoming ranch. The only problem? Riding a horse is much harder than riding a Harley. But her new bunkmate, the former bull riding champion Hank Nash, is just what she needs to take her mind off her saddle sores. Estranged from his daughter, Hank has a lot to make up for, but he intends to convince Mac she should stay until then. Unfortunately, even blue skies and miles of open land may not be enough to soothe Mac's restless soul. Or mute the constant call of the road. No one gets through life unscathed, and Hank can't fathom what Mac has survived. It will take time, patience, and love to help her through. But when deadly trouble comes to the Lazy S, will Mac hit the road, or will she choose the man who's helped mend her shattered soul? Cowboy, Untamed PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED AS MUST LOVE HORSES Sydney Teller has a lot to prove… To the horse industry, to herself, and to the man who thinks she's nothing but trouble. All she needs is a chance. Deployments to Iraq taught Bryan "Boomer" Wilcox to be wary. And Sydney's tarnished family reputation makes him doubt she has what it takes to become the Lazy S Ranch's horse trainer. Though, it seems Sydney is determined to prove him wrong… …about so many things. But Bryan hasn't escaped the military without physical scars. And despite their attraction and budding relationship, it's Bryan's emotional wounds that have Sydney worried. When foul play threatens the ranch—and their lives—will Bryan discover he's the hero he's always been, or will his demons be stronger than their love? Cowboy, Undone PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED AS HOT ON THE TRAIL A second chance at first love. All Jenna Nash ever wanted was her equine therapy program… … and Quinn Powell. At least she has her program. One out of two isn't bad. Except, when tragedy strikes the Lazy S, forcing Quinn back to the ranch, Jenna's program may get closed down before it gets started. Jenna wants to save the program. Quinn wants answers… … and back into the cockpit after a possible career-ending injury. Now they must work together to find the truth. But the truth is uglier and more dangerous than either one of them imagined. Even if they can put their pasts behind them, they have more to fear than losing their hearts… … they could lose their lives.

Wracked with guilt, former Deputy Sheriff Wyatt Wolfe is determined to rebuild a life behind the thin blue line and reluctantly agrees to help the sheriff with an off-the-books murder investigation. An investigation made possible by his reputation around town as a cop killer. Now she must team up with her husband’s killer to find the truth. As their chemistry builds, so does the body count. Are the deaths the work of a serial killer or something more sinister? Something that could get them both killed. The lies bring Geneva and Wolfe together, but will the truth tear them apart? Even though Jericho discloses a big secret, there’s more that he’s hiding. If Cassie’s gambler father taught her nothing else, at least he taught her how to spot the lies. When they’re thrown together to help catch a killer, they could lose more than themselves. They could lose their lives. But life is a gamble. Can Jericho make peace with his past and be the man Cassie needs, or will his demons win? Sweet Justice Some rules are made to be broken. Special Agent Oscar Finn lives life by the rules. A relationship with one of his agents is strictly off-limits… …Only Maria Soto doesn’t work for him anymore. Finn’s mission in life is catching his sister’s killer, and after receiving information that could blow the decades-long investigation wide open, Finn might get what he’s always wanted. Justice. However, his boss insists he brings someone to investigate the tip… and Maria is the only person available. From day one, Maria has had to fight for love. And Oscar Finn is no exception. His sister comes first—always. Despite Maria’s determination to stay away from the man who’ll never love her the way she loves him, he needs help, and she can’t refuse. When Finn admits he’s interested in Maria, she knows there are more important things than falling in love—they have to find a killer. Can Finn and Maria mix business with pleasure? Book The Rise and Fall of the Lazy S Ranch

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Lazy S Ranch written by David J. Murrah and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lazy S Ranch, one of the last major ranches to be established in Texas, came into being at a time when most of the other great ranches were disappearing. Founded in 1898 by Dallas banker and rancher Colonel Christopher Columbus Slaughter, the Lazy S grew to comprise nearly 250,000 acres of the western High Plains in Cochran and Hockley counties, much of which lay in a single contiguous pasture of more than 180,000 acres. Even with careful investment and management, C. C. Slaughter faced many challenges putting together an extensive ranch amid the development of the farmers’ frontier on the high plains. Within a decade, he crafted the Lazy S to become a showplace for well-bred cattle, effective range management, and efficient utilization of limited water resources. He created a working ranch that would serve as a long-lasting legacy for his wife and nine children, to remain “undivided and indivisible.” But shortly after his death in 1919, the family drained its resources, drove it into debt, then divided the land ten ways. In the 1930s, good fortune returned to some of the Slaughter heirs with the discovery of oil on the family lands. Though the Lazy S Ranch was soon forgotten, the breakup of the ranch spurred a new era for the western Llano Estacado and led to the establishment of a county, growth of four new towns, and a railroad across the heart of the ranch, fostered for the most part by the land development projects of Slaughter’s descendants. Here, David J. Murrah covers the entire, fascinating history in The Rise and Fall of the Lazy S Ranch.

The former champion bull rider has returned home to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Yet despite his own struggles, he has the patience to show Mac the ropes, and the sweet touch to draw her out of herself—and her painful past. Book The Birch Creek Ranch Books 1 3

Download or read book The Birch Creek Ranch Books 1 3 written by B. E. Baker and published by Purple Puppy Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-02 with total page 1091 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time ever, grab the first three books in this complete, best-selling series as part of a money-saving boxset. . . Two widows, six kiddos, and a will that leaves them a massive cattle ranch, but only if they work it for a year. Abigail and Amanda may have married brothers, but they have almost nothing else in common (and really, they never did get along very well). After their husbands both pass away, they have no reason to interact. Their connection drops to an awkward phone call on birthdays and an exchange of holiday cards. Until an eccentric uncle of their husbands' leaves a massive cattle ranch to the women's minor children. . . if they work the ranch themselves. A ranch that's located near a small town on the border of Wyoming that isn’t too keen on outsiders. They're both going to turn the bequest down, clearly. It’s not like either of them could properly raise their kids or find love again in a backwater province like Birch Creek. But when things at home change dramatically—for both moms—they decide to give it a try. . . just for the summer. What could possibly go wrong in a mere three months? (Or more importantly... what might go right?) Publisher's Weekly says, "The Bequest [is] an endearing work of women's romantic fiction and the first in the Birch Creek Ranch series. [It] offers a compelling setup as two wildly different women are thrown together in the aftermath of their husbands' deaths. Baker's prose is candid, warm, and allows readers to feel immediately connected to the two protagonists. Baker brings freshness and fun to the story of two 'couldn't be more different' individuals who find they have more in common than they'd anticipated." Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Pamela Kelley said, "B. E. Baker takes you right to the heart of the small town that two widowed sisters-in-law land in very unexpectedly. Can they survive the year they need to spend there to keep it? I really enjoyed reading Bridget's romantic women's fiction debut." B.E. Baker is an amazing storyteller! Wow! Women's fiction at its best. When you open this book, you might want some snacks handy, because you won't be able to stop until you finish. Highly recommend! --USA Today Bestselling Author, Tamie Dearen A sweet, feel-good story! Loved reading about these two women forging a new life for themselves and their children with all the challenges and joys of a ranch! --USA Today Bestselling Author, Amelia Addler I'm a huge fan of Baker's writing and this book is no exception. At once both a BIG story and one that's very intimate, you'll get two women's stories as they're forced together because of a will. Book A Man Absolutely Sure of Himself

Download or read book A Man Absolutely Sure of Himself written by David B. Gracy and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full biography of George Washington Littlefield, the Texas and New Mexico rancher, Austin banker and businessman, University of Texas regent, and philanthropist. In just two decades, Littlefield’s business acumen vaulted him from debt to inclusion in 1892 on the first list of American millionaires. A Man Absolutely Sure of Himself is a grand retelling of the life of a highly successful entrepreneur and Austin civic leader whose work affected spheres from ranching and banking to civic development and academia. Littlefield’s cattle operations during the open range and early ranching periods spanned a domain in New Mexico and Texas larger than the states of Delaware and Connecticut combined. In a unique contribution to ranching art, Littlefield commissioned murals and bronze doors depicting scenes from his ranches to decorate Austin’s American National Bank, which he led for its first twenty-eight years. Gracy provides new information about Littlefield’s term as University of Texas regent and the necessity of choosing between friendship and duty during the university’s confrontation with Gov. James E. Ferguson. Proud of his Civil War service in Terry’s Texas Rangers, Littlefield funded one of the nation’s first centers for Southern history. He also underwrote the school’s purchase of its first rare book library and its training programs preparing troops for World War I’s new combat roles. Littlefield played a central role in advancing Austin from a cattleman’s town into the business center it wanted to become. His Littlefield Building, the tallest office building between New Orleans and San Francisco when it was built, served for a generation as the prime location of the town’s business community. Author David B. Gracy II, a relative of Littlefield, grounds his vivid prose in a lifetime of research into archival and family sources. His comprehensive biography illuminates an exceptional figure, whose life singularly illustrates the evolution of Texas from Southern to Western to American.
