Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laws and Ordinances of New Netherland, 1638-1674: Compiled and Translated From the Original Dutch Records in the Office of the Secretary of State, Albany, N. Y The States General of the United Netherlands incorporated, in the year 1621, a company, called the West India Company, to which it granted, among other powers, the right to establish Colonies in such parts of America as were. Not already occupied by other European nations. This Com pany consisted originally of five branches or Chambers, the principal of which was located in Amsterdam. In virtue of their Charter, the West India Company planted a Colony in the country lying between the Connecticut river and the pres ent State of Maryland, which territory was named, after the parent State, new netherland. The exclusive superintendence of this country was immediately transferred to the Amsterdam Cham ber, which exercised supreme government over it until the latter part of the year 1664. It then passed into the possession of the English, by Whom it was governed until 1673, when the Province was again, recovered by the Dutch, and the government was administered in the name of the States General and the Prince of Orange until the 31st October, 1674. The country was finally surrendered to the English, in accordance with the provisions of the sixth article of the Treaty of Westminster. Book New Histories of Gun Rights and Regulation

Download or read book New Histories of Gun Rights and Regulation written by Joseph Blocher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Supreme Court recently held that the constitutionality of modern gun laws depends on whether they are "consistent with this Nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation." This landmark judicial decision, which cited an essay in this collection, made it ever more crucial to be clear about what the "historical tradition" entails. The scope of the Second Amendment's right to keep and bear arms, and accordingly the government's power to regulate firearms in the interest of public safety, hangs in the balance. Drawing on original research and sources not available to earlier Supreme Court opinions, New Histories of Gun Rights and Regulations brings together various methodological approaches and highlights issues in firearms law that have been previously underexamined. Its contributors, including distinguished historians, social scientists, and legal scholars, offer valuable new insight into the place of guns in American law and society. This groundbreaking new volume illuminates how history and constitutional law interact, suggesting concrete answers to some live legal controversies. A vital contribution to a vibrant debate, New Histories of Gun Rights and Regulations is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the scope of the Second Amendment--a right whose breadth is frequently defined by its historical treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much of the Dutch world in America survived after the English? One hundred years after the English took control of New Netherland in 1664, New York retained many Dutch characteristics. The cultural milieu shifted abruptly, however, with population growth and increased affluence following the termination of the French and Indian Wars in 1760. British customs and tastes that were stylishly attractive to a new generation of moneyed colonists soon put Dutch culture in retreat in all but the most isolated areas. Some elements of the past persisted in ways never dreamed of by the Dutch West India Company officials, who oversaw their nation's colonization in America. These include caucus politics, separation of church and state, neighborly evening visits on the stoop, and Santa Claus. Even more striking is the similarity between principles and practices that emerged in the Dutch Republic four centuries ago and some of the precepts on which the American republic was founded. Much of the Dutch cultural and social history may be interpreted and understood through objects they brought with them and from those objects and structures they created in the New World. This landmark volume, originating in a major exhibit commemorating the tricentennial of the city of Albany, uncovers the range of Dutch colonial experience in America through some 350 objects: paintings, furniture, silver, gold, ceramics, textiles, prints, drawings, and architecture. The result is a rare and remarkable glimpse of New Netherland, a long-ago world that continues to resonate today. Roderic H. Blackburn is an ethnologist and architectural historian who has held positions as Director of Research at Historic Cherry Hill, Assistant Director of the Albany Institute of History and Art, and Senior Research Fellow at the New York State Museum. He is the author of Dutch Colonial Homes in America and Great Houses of New England. Ruth Piwonka is the author of A Portrait of Livingston Manor, 1686–1850 and the coauthor (with Roderic H. Blackburn) of A Visible Heritage: Columbia County, New York: A History in Art and Architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2004 Annual Archives Award for Excellence in Research Using the Holdings of the New York State Archives presented by the Board of Regents and the New State York Archives Beverwijck explores the rich history and Dutch heritage of one of North America's oldest cities—Albany, New York. Drawing on documents translated from the colonial Dutch as well as maps, architectural drawings, and English-language sources, Janny Venema paints a lively picture of everyday life in colonial America. In 1652, Petrus Stuyvesant, director general of New Netherland, established a court at Fort Orange, on the west side of New York State's upper Hudson River. The area within three thousand feet of the fort became the village of Beverwijck. From the time of its establishment until 1664, when the English conquered New Netherland and changed the name of the settlement to Albany, Beverwijck underwent rapid development as newly wealthy traders, craftsmen, and other workers built houses, roads, bridges, and a school, as well as a number of inns. A well-organized system of poor relief also helped less wealthy settlers survive in the harsh colonial conditions. Venema's careful research shows that although Beverwijck resembled villages in the Dutch Republic in many ways, it quickly took on features of the new, "American" society that was already coming into being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful set of essays reveals the day-to-day lives of the British colonists who laid the foundation for what became the United States. British Colonial America: People and Perspectives shifts the spotlight away from the famous political and religious leaders of the time to focus on colonial residents across the full spectrum of American society from the early-17th to the late-18th century. In narrative chapters filled with biographical sketches, British Colonial America explores the day-to-day world of the religious groups, entrepreneurs, women and children, laborers, farmers, and others who made up the vast majority of the colonial population. Coverage also includes those not afforded citizenship, such as African slaves and Native Americans. It is a revealing examination of life at ground level in colonial America, one that finds the people of that time confronting issues that appear throughout the American experience.
