Book Laughing and Crying about Anesthesia

Download or read book Laughing and Crying about Anesthesia written by Gerald L. Zeitlin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each working day at least 40,000 Americans undergoing surgery require general anesthesia: an anesthesiologist renders them oblivious. Fifty years ago when the author Dr. Zeitlin began giving anesthesia in the United Kingdom one patient in 1500 died as a direct consequence of the anesthetic. That number was sadly true all over the world. In 2011 mortality and morbidity from anesthesia is too rare to count accurately. Nevertheless the increasing average age of patients coming to surgery and the inventiveness of surgeons require the same or greater vigilance and sophistication that has led to this desirable change. In this book Dr. Zeitlin gives us a view of the difficulties and struggles that have led to this improvement. He recounts his own untutored, frightened early days in the operating room for six years in hospitals in and around London. He continues with illuminating and powerful stories about the remainder of his career both in academic and private practice in Boston, Massachusetts. The patient in the hands of nearly all other specialists is able to see what his or her physician struggles with in making an accurate diagnosis and planning treatment. Obviously the surgeon's patient in the care of the anesthesiologist knows nothing about what actually occurs in the operating room. We believe this is the first book that gives the reader an inside view of the actors on this stage. It is not for nothing that operating rooms are called operating theatres in the United Kingdom. Although he does not aspire to such literary heights the author would like to think that to a small extent he does for anesthesia what Dr. Atul Gawande achieved for surgery with his illuminating book 'Complications'. Dr. Zeitlin tackles difficult matters such as possible awareness during anesthesia, drug addiction, violence related to anesthesia, his own and others' mishaps and the struggle for recognition that anesthesia is the practice of medicine. The author believes that anesthesiology is the use of intensive care and monitoring in the operating room, the recovery room and in the pain clinic. Some of the stories are so harrowing that the author includes three 'Intermissions' to provide the reader with some intriguing speculations about anesthesia. The most important story Dr. Zeitlin tells is that about the Anesthesia Patient Safety movement. Many of the principal movers of this success story worked in Boston and the author was privileged to have known them all. The disciplines of safe patient care began with anesthesiologists and have now spread to all of medicine. Anesthesiologists introduced the use of simulators in accident prevention. The author does not dismiss the very important roles played in all this by cardiologists, surgeons, pre-and postoperative nurses, our medical industry colleagues and most of all our close collaborators, nurse- anesthetists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever been afraid of GOD. Seeking answers and complication get in your way. Wanting to know that you are truly saved. Wanting everything; but finding nothing. Wanting to knock on GOD's door but can't find it; or does it even exist? THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU In today's world people are interested in their spiritual growth, and many books and classes are available. The authors give their opinions and facts in all different types of methods. This was not available in the years that this author was raised. In 1960 things were very different. The word GOD was never used outside of religious gatherings. We were taught that we must love GOD. Did we? Or were we afraid not to, for various reasons. Questions were not asked, since there were no answers. The author never realized that it was possible for GOD to give us another way, that would help us obtain our true destination, to strive for our good dreams, which were held inside of us. He did and still does. In October 1960 she felt GOD's love and wrote down His inner soft words because she knew they were Sacred. -GOD CREPT UP ON ME. I KNOW NOT FROM WHERE, BUT WHEN I TURNED AROUND I FOUND HIM, HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE.- At the time, she did not realize it, but her first Mystical Experience began. There would be four more, through the years, each lasting one week. This book contains the author's 43 year Spiritual Journey which leads to the Glorification of GOD. He lead, she followed. At times she lead and He walked along side of her or through her. She surrendered to His love and found the Peace, Love and Joy that is available to others also. It is not easy to share something that is very sacred to you. When you begin to acknowledge that it is GOD's will and desire, you begin cautiously and receive the strength of GOD behind you and sometimes opening up a path, which eventually completes the mission.

Book Consciousness Awareness and Anesthesia

Download or read book Consciousness Awareness and Anesthesia written by George A. Mashour and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypnosis, amnesia, and immobility are three major therapeutic endpoints of general anesthesia. In one to two cases out of a thousand, hypnosis and amnesia are not achieved – often leaving a patient immobile but capable of experiencing and remembering intraoperative events. Awareness during general anesthesia is one of the most dreaded complications of surgery and is feared by patients and clinicians alike. Despite many advances in the field, there are also a number of unresolved questions that persist. Some of the difficulties in the detection and prevention of awareness during anesthesia relate to the underlying complexities of the neuroscientific basis of consciousness. Consciousness, Awareness, and Anesthesia is a multidisciplinary approach to both the scientific problem of consciousness and the clinical problem of awareness during general anesthesia. An international cadre of authors with expertise in anesthesiology, neurobiology, and philosophy provides a cutting-edge perspective. No other book on the subject has drawn from such a breadth of scholarship.
