Book Andrew Lau and Alan Mak s Infernal Affairs The Trilogy

Download or read book Andrew Lau and Alan Mak s Infernal Affairs The Trilogy written by Gina Marchetti and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infernal Affairs has received journalistic, popular and corporate notice but little vigorous critical attention. In this book, Gina Marchetti explores the way this example of Hong Kong's cinematic eclecticism has crossed borders as a story, a commercial product and a work of art; and has had an undeniable impact on current Hong Kong cinema. Moreover, she uses this trilogy to highlight the way Hong Kong cinema continues to be inextricably intertwined with global film culture and the transnational movie market. Infernal Affairs served as the source for the Academy Award-winning film The Departed (2006). The Martin Scorsese-directed film won Oscars for best motion picture, director, adapted screenplay and film editing. This is the first time that an American film based on a Hong Kong production swept the Academy Awards by winning four top prizes.

Book Lau v Nichols and Chinese American Language Rights

Download or read book Lau v Nichols and Chinese American Language Rights written by Trish Morita-Mullaney and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2024-07-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a narrative policy portraiture approach to recenter the stories of the Chinese community involved in the Lau v. Nichols court case of 1974. This seminal Supreme Court case ruled that the failure to provide adequate and accessible instruction to approximately 1800 students of Chinese ancestry denied them the opportunity to participate in public education and constituted a discrimination on the basis of national origin. While much has been written on language education policy changes for emergent bilinguals in the US, the perspectives of the key actors involved in the case are rarely heard. This book brings Chinese and Chinese American voices to the forefront, placing the participants within the retrospective social context as they reach their own conclusions about the process and outcomes of the case. It draws upon research in language policy and Asian American studies and invites readers to imagine the social futures and possibilities for what Lau v. Nichols means for the 21st century and beyond. The volume fills a significant gap in narration, representation and retrospective research and will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in Asian American studies, bilingual education, educational policy and leadership, as well as teachers, school administrators and policymakers.

Book Summary of Rabbi Israel Meir Lau s Out of the Depths

Download or read book Summary of Rabbi Israel Meir Lau s Out of the Depths written by Everest Media, and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-05-10T22:59:00Z with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I remember the first time I saw my father being beaten by the Nazis. It was in 1942, when I was five years old, and I was with my mother and brother in Piotrków, Poland. Father was standing in a crowd of Jews, men on one side, women and children on the other. #2 The worst thing I endured during the Holocaust was not the hunger, the cold, or the beatings, but the humiliation. It is almost impossible to bare the helplessness of unjustified humiliation. #3 The three of us melded together as one. We had to be completely silent and keep as close to Mother as possible. We had to be smuggled out under cover of darkness, as if we were part of her body. #4 The three of us went out the door, but we were separated when one German noticed a bit more movement than expected. I was on the left side, my mother was on the right, and Shmuel was on the right side. The force of the blow hurled me and my mother into a puddle outside the synagogue.

Book Out of the Depths

Download or read book Out of the Depths written by Israel Meir Lau and published by Union Square + ORM. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his astonishing memoir, the Holocaust survivor and Chief Rabbi of Israel shares his story of faith and perseverance through WWII and beyond. Israel Meir Lau, one of the youngest survivors of Buchenwald, was just eight years old when the camp was liberated in 1945. Descended from a 1,000-year unbroken chain of rabbis, he grew up to become Chief Rabbi of Israel—and like many of the great rabbis, Lau is a master storyteller. Out of the Depths is his harrowing and inspiring account of life in one of the Nazis deadliest concentration camps, and how he managed to survive against all possible odds. Lau, who lost most of his family in the Holocaust, also chronicles his life after the war, including his emigration to Mandate Palestine during a period that coincides with the development of the State of Israel. The story continues up through today, with that once-lost boy of eight now a brilliant, charismatic, and world-revered figure who has visited with Popes John Paul and Benedict; the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and countless global leaders including Ronald Reagan, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Tony Blair.

After years of constant work and the sudden death of his mother, Ryan is taking some much-needed time off. But as he tries to be supportive to his family, he struggles with his loss and doesn't know how to talk to his dad—who now trolls him on Twitter instead of meeting him for dim sum. When Ryan signs up for a celebrity episode of Baking Fail, he asks Lindsay to teach him how to bake and she agrees.
