Book excerpt: "Nineteenth-century European astronomers tried for decades to explain the variations in their careful astronomical observations. But where the best minds in Europe failed, an intellectual upstart from America succeeded. In 1891 Seth Carlo Chandler Jr., an actuary for a Boston insurance company with no formal education in astronomy, shocked the international scientific community by announcing that he had solved the problem and that an inexpensive instrument he had designed could detect the variation. Another American, Simon Newcomb, compounded the Europeans' embarrassment. Working at the U.S. Naval Observatory Newcomb validated Chandler's findings and reconciled the difference between his observations and accepted theory." "Chandler's discovery, dubbed "the Chandler Wobble," had profound significance to astronomers of the time and later played an important role in space exploration and the development of the revolutionary Global Positioning System (GPS). The authors, a father-daughter team of scientists, tell the story of Chandler's life and scientific works with the aid of private correspondence, documents, and family photographs. In recounting both the historical and dramatic human aspects of the story, they help readers appreciate how Chandler's achievements gave America credibility in the world of serious scientific research."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Variations with Season and Latitude of Density Temperature and Composition in the Lower Thermosphere

Download or read book Variations with Season and Latitude of Density Temperature and Composition in the Lower Thermosphere written by K. S. W. Champion and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of neutral density data has made it possible to extend curves of mean density as a function of latitude and season from 90 to 120 km. There is an approximate isopycnic point at 91 km. Above this point the density variations are reversed from what they are at 80 km. In other words, at 120 km the density in summer and at the tropics is lower than that in CIRA 1965 and in winter the density is higher. The density curves have been idealized near 120 km to join at one of three points. These correspond to typical summer and tropical conditions, winter conditions, and spring/autumn conditions. The summer density is 20 percent below that of the U.S. Standard, the winter density is 50 percent above the Standard and the spring/autumn density is 1 percent above the Standard. By application of appropriate theory the corresponding variations in temperature and mean molecular weight have been calculated. An unexpected result of the theory is the prediction of a seasonal variation of the mean molecular weight. Some of the data presented in the paper have been analyzed since the models were derived. These data have been found to be acceptably close to the models. (Author).

Book Climate Variability of Southern High Latitude Regions

Download or read book Climate Variability of Southern High Latitude Regions written by Neloy Khare and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of climate change–related investigations carried out by Indian researchers through initiatives in southern high latitude regions. It explains climate variability over the Southern Ocean and Antarctica; air, sea, ice, and atmosphere interactions; and the impact of climate variability on sea ice and the polar atmosphere. The data were gathered at two Indian research bases, Maitri and Bharti, which are ideal sites to study and understand climatic evolution in Antarctic in the past and recent changes. This book helps to understand climatological perspectives and to evaluate some of the most pressing issues in the south polar region. FEATURES Highlights the achievements of India in the contemporary field of Antarctic climatology Presents four decades of research by Indian scientists in Antarctica, which is now shared for the first time with the global community Includes case studies on climatological and environmental conditions of natural archives to shed light on climate scenarios in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic regions Covers various aspects of climate variability and induced air-sea-ice-atmosphere interactions This book is edited by one of the top scientists and researchers of India in the field of paleoclimatology, and the contributors are experts in the Antarctic region.
