I have, and I can assure you that you are fortunate if you have not. But I am not going to tell you my experience in one. I told it to my friend White, one day. I thought that my story was very amusing and interesting consequently, I naturally expected some signs of interest on White's part. But he remained perfectly calm throughout the whole relation, did not even smile, and, on the whole, looked bored. What could he mean by this strange behavior, and by that vacant look of his, as if he were thinking of something far away? Owens, who pitched the first three innings, went well for two innings, but was withdrawn in the third and replaced by Barrish after three runs had scored. It was the first time that he has ever attempted the role of pitcher and although he was hit freely in the third, he should prove a good pitcher when he has more experience. Latin School scored thrice in the first inning, but Groton went ahead in the scoring by getting four runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. The fifth inning, however, saw the count tied. Martin went to first on a'pass and scored on Joe Goode's three bagger, who in turn scored on Walsh's single. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 21: April, 1902 Heretofore the school has celebrated the graduation of its first class in connection with Washington's Birthday heretofore the Father of our country has been, in a measure, the subject of the oration. To-day marks a de parture from this custom to-day is Class Day alone; that is, it is our day, and it is about ourselves that I would speak. As it is needless to say, we are a part of that numerous class of individuals, the youth, which has at all times been the cause of so much solicitude on the part of those who have out grown it. As a result of this solicitude our forefathers, exactly 267 years ago to-day, founded the Boston Latin School. For many years this school has been our friend and teacher. We meet to-day to say farewell to this friend of ours, which we can always rever ence and love, but which we leave forever, and which we can never know again. And we have met to tell of the things we have done in its company and under its guidance, and of the things we expect to do when we are far from it. The heat of the August sun was powerful', - and Arizona heat is indeed terrific The very air seemed to burn, and the parched plain, stretching afar in the distance, was like the top of a hot stove, from which the fumes of torrid warmth quivered up into the air. The sky was cloudless, blue, vast. Not a speck could be seen except some distant vul ture, sailing out of human vision in burning space. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 53: November, 1933 The register, of course, is a chattel of Latin School. It is governed, completely and irrevocably, by the school. And the latter, after the manner of owners of property, is likely to become a trifle too sure of its possession. It is apt to take it too much for granted - to such an extent, that it almost completely overlooks it, and continues to rely on the force that has kept the paper going thus far, to maintain it further. The thought process mav be something like this: Oh, yes, the school magazine; it comes out once a month' sometimes good, sometimes not so good; sure, all schools have papers. Have you ever thought how that school paper must be put to gether? A paper does not come that way, you know. Each month it must be built up, gradually, painstakingly. And for material (the material that many think just exists) we must use - what you give us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
