Book A History of Latin Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Latin Literature Classic Reprint written by Marcus Southwell Dimsdale and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Latin Literature The vast progress made in all departments of literary scholarship, and the minuteness with which knowledge is now subdivided, threaten to leave the general reader bewildered at the diversity and bulk of what is presented to him. The exact historian of literature concentrates his attention on so narrow a field that he cannot be expected to appeal to a wide class; those who study what he writes are, or must in some measure grow to be, his fellow-specialists. But the more precisely each little area is surveyed in detail, the more necessary does it become for us to return at frequent intervals to an inspection of the general scheme of which each topographical study is but a fragment magnified. It has seemed that of late the minute treatment of a multitude of intellectual phenomena has a little tended to obscure the general movement of literature in each race or country. In a crowd of handbooks, each of high authority in itself, the general trend of influence or thread of evolution may be lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Classics in English Is the merciless line in which Mr. Lowell, in his Cathedral, pillories him for the contempt of mankind. We must not close this rapid and summary survey of Latin literature without remarking that it was proper of the Roman genius to produce a copious literature about literature, in the form of grammatical, rhetorical, and critical treatises, which, however, we are compelled, though they include such works of imperishable value as Quintilian's, to pass with this mere note of their existence. Book Dies Romani Short Readings from Latin Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dies Romani Short Readings from Latin Literature Classic Reprint written by W. F. Witton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dies Romani, Short Readings From Latin Literature Owing to recent changes in school curricula and methods, many boys now begin the study of Latin at the age of twelve or thirteen, wolk through an introductory 'book, and in three or four years reach the standard of a matriculation examination. They then leave school, too often with the lasting impression that Latin literature consists practically of the works of Caesar and Ovid, and with no more exact knowledge of the life and thought of the Romans than they have acquired from a grammatical Study of the campaigns of the one and the mythology of the other. Such a result seems inevitable, if the methods and textbooks suitable for those Who will spend six or eight years on the study of Latin are adopted for these pupils. They cannot afford to devote the whole of a term or half year to a Single book. Accordingly I have selected, from as Wide a range of authors as possible, passages noteworthy either for their literary excellence or for their human interest. Though shorter than the ordinary 'book', they form in each case a complete whole; and will provide sufficient material for a three or four years' course, which may be begun as soon as the elements of the grammar are mastered. Book Roman Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Roman Literature Classic Reprint written by Augustus S. Wilkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roman Literature But apart from this direct historical importance, the Latin literature is hardly less deserving of our study as the channel through which for many centuries the thought of Greece found its way to the Western world. Direct communication between the East and the West was rare and scanty during the time when the great modern nations were forming. The only access which these had to the fountain-heads of poetry and philosophy was through the Latin writers. If it had not been for the echoes which the latter sent on, the voices which first aroused the sense of the true and the beautiful would have been silenced for ages. It is true that when Greek literature came to be known directly to the Western world its influence was far more powerful than it had been when only known through Latin. But this must not make us forget how much the Latin literature had done for men like Dante and Chaucer, and we may even add Shakspere, to whom Greek was still unknown. Download or read book Second Latin Book Classic Reprint written by Frank Justus Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-18 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Latin Book The right of Caesar to occupy an important place in the early years of the Latin program of secondary schools has not been successfully challenged. His Commentaries will continue to enjoy the prestige which the traditions of centuries have assigned them. And rightly; for no Latin writer has sur passed this literary soldier in the composition of vigorous and luminous prose, which so admirably fits his work to be a medium for the presentation of the form and structure of the Latin language to the young student. But the right of Caesar to occupy not alone the centre of the stage but the whole stage as well, in the second year of Latin study, has been justly and successfully challenged. During the last few years a very general call has been heard for an easier, better graded, richer second year program in Latin than the study of Caesar alone affords. Not only have secondary teachers urged this change, but college professors and administrative officers have generally approved the plan, and accepted this more varied program in lieu of their long established requirements in Caesar.
