Book excerpt: This volume presents some of the critical founders to the founding of the Catholic Church and Christianity in general. Many different schools of thought existed during this time and some of them are presented within this text and refuted with the proper theological thinking that these fathers had learned from their predecessors. Thought some of the claims in this text has been updated by various church organizations in the present years, this represents the original thinking and it shows how it influences our thinking today.

Book The Ante Nicene Fathers Vol 5

Download or read book The Ante Nicene Fathers Vol 5 written by Alexander Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 5: Translations of the Writings of the Fathers Down to A. D. 325; Hippolytus, Cyprian, Caius, Novatian, Appendix Thus, Hippolytus, once torn to pieces as by horses, in his works, if not in his person, comes to life again in our times, to shed new light upon the history of Latin Christianity, and to show that Rome had no place nor hand in its creation. He appears as a. Greek Father in a church which was yet a Greek colony 2 and he shows to what an estate of feebleness and humiliation the Roman Church had been brought, probably by the neglect of preaching, which IS an anomaly in its history, and hardly less probably by its adherence to a Greek liturgy long after the Chris tians of Rome had ceased to understand Greek familiarly. At such a moment Hippolytus proves himself a reformer. His historical elucidations of the period, therefore, \form an admirable introduction to Cyprian, and will explain the entire independence of Roman dictation, with which he maintained his own opinions against that Church and its bishops. And lastly we have Novatian as a sequel to the works of Cyprian; and truly, the light upon his sad history is duplicated by what Hippolytus shows us of the times and circumstances which made his schism possible, and which somewhat relieve his character from its darker shades. • Author : Ralph Del Colle

Download or read book Christ and the Spirit written by Ralph Del Colle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of Spirit-Christology--a contemporary theological model of the relationship between Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Del Colle measures this christological model against trinitarian theology and tests its viability. He investigates in particular the development of a Roman Catholic Spirit-Christology, which has arisen from within the modern neo-scholastic theological tradition. Contrary to other interpreters, Del Colle argues that an incarnational christology and a Spirit-Christology are not conflicting but complementary and that this is recognized by the older and deeper tradition. In conclusion, he seeks to demonstrate the productivity of the Spirit-Christological model in reference to three major areas of concern for contemporary systematic theology: cultural pluralism and diversity, emancipation and social praxis, and inter-religious dialogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One naturally assumes that when they listen to their Pastor, Reverend, or Priest, that they speak the truth, and takes for granted that when the Pope speaks, he also speaks the truth. Yet few Christians are conscious, much less concerned to hear about the truth, or of how they have been deceived for centuries, and betrayed again by their sacrosanct religious institutions bent upon enriching themselves by their ignorance of the faiths history and gullibility. This book deals with the truth, the truth, which many Christian sects do not wish to convey to their followers. For almost two thousand years Christians have maintained that Jesus was God incarnate, a sinless man, a man born of a virgin mother, a man who was the embodiment of perfection on earth, which is unflinchingly stated in their Christian Bibles, the New Testament, [Jesus] Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. ~I Peter 2:22, King James Authorized Version. Cf. Luke 2:48, Joseph is Jesus father (?). We are dying today from the fact of not having anyone who knows how to lay down his life for the Truth. ~Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J., quoted in The Jesuits: The Society of Jesus and the Betrayal of the Roman Catholic Church by Malachi Martin, author of Vatican and The Final Conclave, pg. 286, 1987.

Book Turning Points in the Expansion of Christianity

Download or read book Turning Points in the Expansion of Christianity written by Alice T. Ott and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This readable survey on the history of missions tells the story of pivotal turning points in the expansion of Christianity, enabling readers to grasp the big picture of missional trends and critical developments. Alice Ott examines twelve key points in the growth of Christianity across the globe from the Jerusalem Council to Lausanne '74, an approach that draws on her many years of classroom teaching. Each chapter begins with a close-up view of a particularly compelling and paradigmatic episode in Christian history before panning out for a broader historical outlook. The book draws deeply on primary sources and covers some topics not addressed in similar volumes, such as the role of British abolitionism on mission to Africa and the relationship between imperialism and mission. It demonstrates that the expansion of Christianity was not just a Western-driven phenomenon; rather, the gospel spread worldwide through the efforts of both Western and non-Western missionaries and through the crucial ministry of indigenous lay Christians, evangelists, and preachers. This fascinating account of worldwide Christianity is suitable not only for the classroom but also for churches, workshops, and other seminars.

Book Retrieving Catholicity in American Protestantism

Download or read book Retrieving Catholicity in American Protestantism written by John Williamson Nevin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays on church history by John Williamson Nevin (1803-86), the theological creator of Mercersburg Theology. Nevin and his colleague Philip Schaff were attempting to reorient American ecclesial thought to be more historical. Most American theologians of the period posited a period of spiritual decline soon after the New Testament, lasting until the Protestant Reformation. They believed the ongoing task of the children of the Reformation was to remake the church in the mold of the apostolic faith. In these essays, Nevin was seeking to establish a more unified historical narrative that saw the Reformation as an essential outgrowth of the medieval Catholic church. Nevin's search for an answer to the church question--what is the church?--demanded a focus on history as an unfolding, teleological journey. Nevin's search for history is part of his larger search for catholicity in the American Protestant church. These writings are an important part of the larger theological project that is known as Mercersburg Theology, which is being explored in the volumes of this series.

Book excerpt: This one-volume reference work provides the first encyclopedic treatment of the life, thought, and influence of Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354-430), one of the greatest figures in the history of the Christian church. The product of more than 140 leading scholars throughout the world, this comprehensive encyclopedia contains over 400 articles that cover every aspect of Augustine's life and writings and trace his profound influence on the church and the development of Western thought through the past two millennia. Major articles examine in detail all of Augustine's nearly 120 extant writings, from his brief tractates to his prodigious theological works. For many readers, this volume is the only source for commentary on the numerous works by Augustine not available in English. Other articles discuss: Augustine's influence on other theologians, from contemporaries like Jerome and Ambrose to prominent figures throughout church history, such as Gregory the Great, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Harnack; Augustine's life, the chaotic political events of his world, and the church's struggles with such heresies as Arianism, Donatism, Manicheism, and Pelagianism; Augustine's thoughts about philosophical problems (time, the ascent of the soul, the nature of truth), theological questions (guilt, original sin, free will, the Trinity), and cultural issues (church-state relations, Roman society).

Book excerpt: The Virgin Mary is more than just a bit player in the Christmas Pageant. However, if you are indisposed towards the Virgin Mary, perhaps no amount of evidence will change your mind. After all, any number of people have used Sacred Scripture devise any number of different theological systems, each internally coherent and with great explanatory power. Despite this, one of the unique things about human consciousness is our ability to step outside ourselves, to see things from another perspective, and to change our minds. I ask you to examine the evidence and to examine the views of people you might normally discard out of hand. If you make the effort, even if you remain unconvinced, you will nonetheless find the process spiritually rewarding.
