Book Latin and Greek Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Latin and Greek Verse Classic Reprint written by Thomas Saunders Evans and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin and Greek Verse This volume is published in compliance with a wish very warmly expressed by numerous friends and admirers of Professor Evans. Those who are more immediately responsible for its issue have been actuated, independently of this external appeal, by an affectionate desire to furnish a memorial of an original and highly gifted man, considered by many to have few rivals in his special department of scholarship. They venture also to hope that it may exercise some reinvigorating influence upon a branch of scholarship which has flourished in this country in the past, but is at present, in the opinion of some competent judges, exhibiting unmistakable symptoms of decay. The compositions now given to the public are only a portion of a much larger number found amongst Professor Evans's papers. Many of those that are withheld well merit publication. Eternal summer gilds them yet, But all, except their sun, is set. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tentamina: Essays in Translation Into Latin, and Greek Verse At a time when we hear much of the folly and futility of translating into Latin and Greek verse, it behoves every lover of the art to bear witness to the profit and pleasure he has derived from it. This can be done by the rank and file, as well as by the Kopvcaioi. And it is with some such thought as this that I venture to publish my collection. Many of the happiest hours of my life have been spent in writing Latin and Greek verse: and if to read these versions gives even a few scholars a tithe of the pleasure it has given me to make them, and stimulates two or three tyros to continue their efforts, I shall be more than content. I have called my renderings 'Tentamina' advisedly, for no one can be more fully conscious than myself that several of them are not, in the strict sense of the word, translations at all. It is conceivable that an adequate rendering of such pieces as, for instance, Tennyson's Revenge or Walt Whitman's Euthanasia is impossible. It may nevertheless be worth while to attempt (and even to read) a version; and 'The rapture of pursuing Is the prize the vanquished gain.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dublin Translations Into Greek and Latin Verse This is the first collection which has ever been made of Dublin Greek and Latin Verses. In 1867 some translations by myself and two friends were published under the title Hesperidum Susurri; and in 1869 I set on foot a terminal College magazine, called Kottabos, in which translations into Greek and Latin appeared, together with original English, Greek, and Latin verses, translations from ancient and modern languages, and a few light essays in prose. Most of the translations now brought together have already appeared in Hesperidum Susurri and Kottabos. They are all by Dublin men.
