Book Latin American School of Physics XXXI ELAF

Download or read book Latin American School of Physics XXXI ELAF written by Shahen Hacyan and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 1999-03-26 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the XXXI Latin-American School of Physics. The focus is on New Perspectives on Quantum Mechanics. During three weeks of the School, lectures from leading physicists aimed to present a general overview of the current state-of-the-art of quantum physics, both from a theoretical and an experimental perspective. The contributions of the first part deal with quantum optics, modern techniques for atom cooling by means of lasers, atomic and ion traps, the manipulation of atoms in microcavities, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The emphasis was on experimental techniques related to fundamental phenomena predicted by quantum mechanics. In the second part, we find new theoretical methods for the study of quantum mechanics, tomographic methods, and alternative interpretations of quantum mechanics. The final part is a collection of topics of quantum mechanics: mesoscopic systems, several mathematical techniques, and quantum chaos.

Book Latin American School of Physics XL ELAF Symmetries in Physics

Download or read book Latin American School of Physics XL ELAF Symmetries in Physics written by Roelof Bijker and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The XL Latin-American School of Physics was celebrated in memory of Marcos Moshinsky, who was one of the pioneers to use symmetries in several fields of physics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. It is well known that the Group Theory is the mathematical tool to discover the symmetries in nature, so the central theme of the School was symmetries in physics and its applications in molecular, nuclear, and particle physics. Marcos Moshinsky was also one of the first to study transient effects. He considered the transient behavior that follows after the sudden opening of a quantum shutter that changes the free evolution of a wavepacket. A revision of resonant states to get analytical expressions of decay quantum phenomena is included in the book. Finally, the concept of dynamical symmetries is used in a new probability representation of quantum mechanics together with the description of dissipation in classical and quantum systems.

Book Exact Solutions and Scalar Fields in Gravity

Download or read book Exact Solutions and Scalar Fields in Gravity written by Alfredo Macías and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided into four parts, this book covers recent developments in topics pertaining to gravity theories, including discussions on the presence of scalar fields. Part One is devoted to exact solutions in general relativity, and is mainly concerned with the results of rotating null dust beams and fluids. Also included is a panoramic vision of new research directions in this area, which would require revising certain theorems and their possible extensions within gravity theories, new aspects concerning the Ernst potentials, double Kerr spacetimes, and rotating configurations. In particular, there is a detailed discussion of totally symmetric and totally geodesic spaces, in which a method for generating (2+1)-dimensional solutions from (3+1)-dimensional solutions is given. Part Two deals with alternative theories of gravity, all of which include scalar fields and gauge fields. Here, quantum and cosmological effects, which arise from both gravity theories in four and higher dimensions and from metric-affine theories, are investigated. Part Three is devoted to cosmological and inflationary scenarios. Local effects, such as the influence of scalar fields in protogalactic interactions, numerical studies of the collapse of molecular cores, as well as the inverse inflationary problem and the blue eigenvalue spectrum of it, are considered. Moreover, the role of scalar fields as dark matter and quantum cosmology in the Bergman-Wagoner and Gowdy theories, together with the relation of the conformal symmetry and deflationary gas universe, are likewise presented. The last part of the book includes some mixed topics which are still in the experimental stage. Among them are the foundation of the Maxwell theory, a discussion on electromagnetic Thirring problems, a note on the staticity of black holes with non-minimally coupled scalar fields, and a study of the Lorentz force free charged fluids in general relativity. Thus, this book is the most up-to-date, comprehensive collection of papers on the subject of exact solutions and scalar fields in gravity and is a valuable tool for researchers in the area.

Book Selected Topics in Physics Astrophysics and Biophysics

Download or read book Selected Topics in Physics Astrophysics and Biophysics written by E. Abecassis de Laredo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lecture notes of ten courses given at the XIV Latin American School of Physics (XIV LASP) which took place in Caracas, Venezuela, from the 10th to the 28th of July 1972. The LASP is held each year in a different Latin American country. Its purpose is to bring together young Latin American physicists at the doctorate level to attend lectures given by well known scientists. The participants are also invited to give seminars on their research work. The topics of the courses given this year were chosen according to the existent fields of interest in Latin America. Two of these courses, namely those covering astrophysics and biophysics were given in such a way as to be accessible to all par ticipants independently of their main field of interest. The XIV LASP has received financial support from institutions in Venezuela and abroad, making possible a meeting of ninety-two Latin American physicists and ten distinguished lecturers. For this we are indebted to the following Institutions: Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnologicas de Venezuela, Organization of American States, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, and its physicists, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Consejo de Desarrollo Cientifico y Humanistico de la U.C.V., Universidad Simon Bolivar, Embassy of U.S.A. in Venezuela, Embassy of France in Venezuela, The British Council in Venezuela, Ministerio de Educacion de Venezuela and the Latin-American Center of Physics.

Book Nonlinear Phenomena in Physics

Download or read book Nonlinear Phenomena in Physics written by Francisco Claro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was almost four hundred years ago that Galileo wrote in Il Saggiatore that the "Book of Nature is written in mathema ti ca 1 characters". Thi s sentence, i nspi red at the dawn of physics has proved with the passage of time to contain a deep truth and also a warning: in order to understand Nature, first we must learn to read mathema tical characters. Indeed, writing physical law in such characters has proved not as hard as unraveling the content of the resulting equations. In particular, the lack of knowledge in the field of nonlinear mathematics has been a severe limita tion in the past. Thus the solution to equations such as the Navier-Stokes equation in fluid dynamics has remained elusive. The recent advent of fast computers and some important analytical and numerical results in the study of bifurcations and nonlinear waves have encouraged work both in theory and experiment involving non linear phenomena. An explosive growth in the specialized literature penetrating most research areas in physics in the last few years has ensued. This book contains the most recent advances in nonlinear physics in various fields including astrophysics, gravitation, particle physics, quantum optics, fluid dynamics and the mathematics underlying the phenomena of chaos and nonlinear waves. It presents a selection from the lectures delivered at the XXI '_atin American School of Physics held in Santiago, Chile in July-August 1984 (EtAF'84).

Book Dynamical Problems in Soliton Systems

Download or read book Dynamical Problems in Soliton Systems written by Shozo Takeno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers presented in the oral session of the 7th Kyoto Summer Institute (KSI) . on Dynamical Problems in Soliton Systems, held in Kyoto from August 27 to 31, 1984. Furthermore, it contains contributions of R.K. Bullough, H.H. Chen, A.S. Davydov, and N. Sanchez, who unfortunately could not attend. Thirty-six papers were presented in the oral session and 17 papers in the poster session. The meeting brought together 109 physicists and mathematicians, of which 22 were from abroad (see group photograph). The KSI is an international meeting organized by the Research Institute for Fundamental Physics (RIFP), Kyoto University to discuss various cur re nt problems of fundamental importance in theoretical physics. The 7th KSI was the first international meeting on solitons in Japan. Early in 1983, it was feit in the RIFP that the time was ripe for a conference dealing with problems concerning solitons. The RIFP asked us to organize the confer ence. The Organizing Committee consisted of: R. Hirota (Hiroshima) T. Taniuti (Nagoya) Y.H. Ichikawa (Nagoya) M. Toda (Tokyo) Z. Maki (Kyoto) M. Wadati (Tokyo) N. Yajima (Fukuoka) S. Takeno (Kyoto) Since its discovery, the study of the soliton as a stable particle-like state of nonlinear systems has caught the imagination of physicists and mathemati cians.

Book excerpt: Jayme Tiomno (1920-2011) was one of the most influential Brazilian physicists of the 20th century, interacting with many of the renowned physicists of his time, including John Wheeler and Richard Feynman, Eugene Wigner, Chen Ning Yang, David Bohm, Murray Gell-Mann, Remo Ruffini, Abdus Salam, and many others. This biography tells the sometimes romantic, often discouraging but finally optimistic story of a dedicated scientist and educator from a developing country who made important contributions to particle physics, gravitation, cosmology and field theory, and to the advancement of science and of scientific education, in many institutions in Brazil and elsewhere. Drawing on unpublished documents from archives in Brazil and the US as well as private sources, the book traces Tiomno's long life, following his role in the establishment of various research facilities and his tribulations during the Brazilian military dictatorship. It presents a story of progress and setbacks in advancing science in Brazil and beyond, and of the persistence and dedication of a talented physicist who spent his life in search of scientific truth.
