Book The Motorcycle Diaries

Download or read book The Motorcycle Diaries written by Ernesto Che Guevara and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller With a new introduction by The Motorcyle Diaries filmmaker Walter Salles, and featuring 24 pages of photos taken by Che. The Motorcycle Diaries is Che Guevara's diary of his journey to discover the continent of Latin America while still a medical student, setting out in 1952 on a vintage Norton motorcycle together with his friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist. It captures, arguably as much as any book ever written, the exuberance and joy of one person's youthful belief in the possibilities of humankind tending towards justice, peace and happiness. After the release in 2004 of the exhilarating film of the same title, directed by Walter Salles, the book became a New York Times and international bestseller. This edition includes a new introduction by Walter Salles and an array of new material that was assembled for the 2004 edition coinciding with the release of the film, including 24 pages of previously unpublished photos taken by Che, notes and comments by his wife, Aleida Guevara March, and an extensive introduction by the distinguished Cuban author, Cintio Vitier. "A journey, a number of journeys. Ernesto Guevara in search of adventure, Ernesto Guevara in search of America, Ernesto Guevara in search of Che. On this journey, solitude found solidarity. 'I' turned into 'we.'"—Eduardo Galeano "As his journey progresses, Guevara's voice seems to deepen, to darken, colored by what he witnesses in his travels. He is still poetic, but now he comments on what he sees, though still poetically, with a new awareness of the social and political ramifications of what's going on around him."—January Magazine "Our film is about a young man, Che, falling in love with a continent and finding his place in it." —Walter Salles, director of the film version of The Motorcycle Diaries "All this wandering around 'Our America with a Capital A' has changed me more than I thought." —Ernesto Che Guevara, from The Motorcycle Diaries

Robert Pazmino's experiences in a South American base community and the barrios of Costa Rica are here translated into fresh and vital proposals for Christian education in North America. Showing the way between fundamentalism of both the right and left, the author brings into creative partnership an often polarized orthodoxy and 'orthopraxy'. A valuable resource for religious educators, pastors, and seminary students." - Gabriel Fackre Abbot Professor of Christian Theology Andover Newton Theological School Pazmino has shown significant creativity in bringing the insights of liberation theology to bear on the discipline of religious education. He has done this in a manner that is directly relevant to a North American audience, and not merely to those curious about Latin American liberation theology. He writes clearly and succinctly, and his book could be valuable in courses on religious education in seminars and colleges. It is a must for curriculum planners and writers, as well as for directors of Christian education in local churches." - Justo L. Gonzalez Director, Hispanic Summer Program The Fund for Theological Education, Inc.

Book For Better Relations With Our Latin American Neighbors

Download or read book For Better Relations With Our Latin American Neighbors written by Fellow in Development Economics Robert Bacon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Better Relations With Our Latin American Neighbors: A Journey to South America No small part of the work of the Division of Intercourse and Education of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is done through the medium of international visits by representative men. Experience has already confirmed the reasonable assumption that such visits are useful, and in high degree helpful, in building up a spirit of international friendship and in developing international understanding. A careful reading of Mr. Robert Bacon's Report of the details of his trip to South America in the summer and autumn of 1913 will show precisely how such visits as his contribute to the peace and good order of the world. National ideals and national policies are carefully and sympathetically explained, not only to leading personalities in the countries visited, but also to large and representative audiences of teachers, merchants and men of affairs. The newspaper press is almost uniformly interested and helpful on occasions of this kind, and the visitor of distinction and of public service at home is made cordially and warmly welcome. It is in high degree important to multiply such visits on the part of representative men in the various American republics. The barrier of language will be broken down, or surmounted, as a knowledge of English becomes more widespread in the South American countries, and as the ability to read, to speak and to write Spanish increases in the United States. Bonds of a common interest in finance and in commerce are already being forged between the peoples of the several American republics. These bonds will be followed and strengthened by others in due time. There will thus be developed a genuine American public opinion and a genuine American understanding and point of view, that will be common alike to the people of the United States and to those of the other republics to the south. In order that Mr. Bacon's Report may most effectively accomplish its purpose, it is now published in two editions, an English edition for circulation among English speaking people, and a Spanish and Portuguese edition for circulation in Latin America. Book excerpt: From 1799 to 1804, German naturalist and adventurer Alexander von Humboldt conducted the first extensive scientific exploration of Latin America. At the completion of his arduous 6,000-mile journey, he was feted by Thomas Jefferson, presented to Napoleon and, after the publication of his findings, hailed as the greatest scientific genius of his age. Humboldt’s Cosmos tells the story of this extraordinary man who was equal parts Einstein and Livingstone, and of the adventure that defined his life. Gerard Helferich vividly recounts Humboldt’s expedition through the Amazon, over the Andes, and across Mexico and Cuba, highlighting his paradigm-changing discoveries along the way. During the course of the expedition, Humboldt cataloged more than 60,000 plants, set an altitude record climbing the volcano Chimborazo, and introduced millions of Europeans and Americans to the great cultures of the Inca and the Aztecs. In the process, he also revolutionized geology and laid the groundwork for modern sciences such as climatology, oceanography, and geography. His contributions would profoundly influence future greats such as Charles Darwin and shape the course of science for centuries to come. Humboldt’s Cosmos is a dramatic tribute to one of history’s most audacious adventurers, who, as Stephen Jay Gould noted, "may well have been the world’s most famous and influential intellectual."

Book Contemporary Travel Writing of Latin America

Download or read book Contemporary Travel Writing of Latin America written by Claire Lindsay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a new approach to travel writing about Latin America by examining ‘domestic’ journey narratives that have been produced by travellers from the continent itself and largely in Spanish. Historically, travel writing about Latin America has been written primarily from the perspective of the foreign, often European, traveller. As such, and following the large influx of military, scientific, and leisure travellers in the region since its colonisation, much of this foreign travel writing has depicted the continent in predominantly exoticist and/or imperialist terms. Lindsay explores how Latin American travellers have conceived and constructed narratives about travel at home and considers how such texts (many of them available in English translation or with subtitles) function to counter or corroborate long-standing myths about the continent. Through a series of regionally- and thematically-oriented case studies that engage with key issues, themes and debates in both Latin American and travel studies, Lindsay provides the first sustained interdisciplinary study of contemporary domestic travel narratives about the region and will also comprise an important intervention into methodological debates about travel and travel writing.
