Book Sociology and Development

Download or read book Sociology and Development written by Emanuel de Kadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974 Sociology and Development are a selection papers from the British Sociological Association’s conference on development. The book combines both theoretical discussion and empirical material drawn from both urban and rural areas in Africa, Latin America, China, the USSR and Great Britain, as well as from specific studies on the mass media and the health services. Above all, the papers contribute to a greater understanding of reality in dependent, less developed societies, and so modify some of the over-simplifications introduced by the sweeping vision of the new theorists.

Book Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle

Download or read book Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle written by Diego Ayala and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and 1960s, Spain underwent one of the most rapid processes of economic development the world had ever seen. Most existing analyses of this process explain the “Spanish Miracle” as a product of the unleashing of market forces and of changes in economic policy made by the Franco regime in the 1950s. Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle provides an alternative explanation of Spanish economic development, analyzing the Miracle from an interdisciplinary political economy perspective that treats capitalist growth as a complex and dynamic interaction between capitalists, workers and the state. The Spanish Miracle is linked to changes in Spanish society produced by the Spanish Civil War, to the class structure of the regime brought to power by that Civil War and to the interaction between domestic social struggles under the Franco regime and Spain’s insertion into the international political economy of the Cold War capitalist world. Ambitious in scope, Political Economy of the Spanish Miracle both revises conventional understandings of Spanish economic growth and situates Spain within comparative discussions of development in the twentieth century. This book will be of great interest to readers in political economy, economic sociology, historical sociology and Spanish and European history more broadly.

Book Voices from the Wild Horse Desert

Download or read book Voices from the Wild Horse Desert written by Jane Clements Monday and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded before the Civil War, the King and Kenedy Ranches have become legendary for their size, their wealth, and their endless herds of cattle. A major factor in the longevity of these ranches has always been the loyal workforce of vaqueros (Mexican and Mexican American cowboys) and their families. Some of the vaquero families have worked on the ranches through five or six generations. In this book, Jane Clements Monday and Betty Bailey Colley bring together the voices of these men and women who make ranching possible in the Wild Horse Desert. From 1989 to 1995, the authors interviewed more than sixty members of vaquero families, ranging in age from 20 to 93. Their words provide a panoramic view of ranch work and life that spans most of the twentieth century. The vaqueros and their families describe all aspects of life on the ranches, from working cattle and doing many kinds of ranch maintenance to the home chores of raising children, cooking, and cleaning. The elders recall a life of endless manual labor that nonetheless afforded the satisfaction of jobs done with skill and pride. The younger people describe how modernization has affected the ranches and changed the lifeways of the people who work there.

Book Agrarian Reform in Theory and Practice

Download or read book Agrarian Reform in Theory and Practice written by Jane Benton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999. Despite the attempts of a number of Latin American republics to redistribute land resources and carry out agrarian reform programmes, ’the land question’ remains a vital political issue throughout the region. This book focuses on Bolivia, where government proposals to replace a radical agrarian reform law of 1953 with a neo-liberal Ley INRA provoked heated public debate and violent campesino clashes with the police (witnessed by the author) in September/October 1996. The first five chapters are largely concerned with theoretical aspects and a review of Bolivia’s agrarian reform legislation: the remaining six chapters are devoted to an analysis, from the viewpoints of participant campesinos and the researcher, of agricultural change in Aymara communities beside Lake Titicaca, where the author has conducted research over nearly 30 years. Currently lakeside farming is under severe threat as a result of land degradation, limited cash resources, rural-urban migration, tourism and commuterisation.

Download or read book Volkswagen in the Amazon written by Antoine Acker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1973 to 1987, Volkswagen's (VW) 140,000 hectare 'pioneer' cattle ranch on the Amazon frontier laid bare the limits of capitalist development. These limits were not only economic, with the core management of a multinational company engaged in the 'integration' of an extreme world periphery, but they were also legal and ethical, with the involvement of indentured labor and massive forest burning. Its physical limits were exposed by an unpredictable ecosystem refusing to submit to VW's technological arsenal. Antoine Acker reveals how the VW ranch, a major project supported by the Brazilian military dictatorship, was planned, negotiated, and eventually undone by the intervention of internationally connected actors and events.

Book Promise Of Development

Download or read book Promise Of Development written by Peter F Klaren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years Latin Americanists have been among the most innovative and productive theorists of the uneven process of development. This collection of substantial selections from some of the most prominent theorists in the field represents a scholarly consolidation and reassessment of the controversies concerning the development of Latin America. Beginning with a historiographic overview, the editors emphasize the origins, evolution, and historical context of the development of each theoretical school (modernization, dependency and Marxism, corporatism, and bureaucratic authoritarianism) and then present key selections drawn from the writings of major theorists, organized by school. Each selection is prefaced with a short editorial introduction that highlights the central themes. A concluding section outlines the main debates surrounding each school and suggests new directions in theoretical development that might arise from criticism of the theories of authoritarianism and the search for democratic processes of development. The book’s usefulness as a text is further enhanced by selected bibliographies that contain additional readings on each development theory. Here is a single source for Latin Americanists who hope to interest and instruct their students in the rich theoretical traditions and debates in Latin American studies. This book can also be a strong core volume for courses on other developing areas.

Book The Pastoral Land Commission Participation of Fr John Mary Cauchi Paraiba Brazil

Download or read book The Pastoral Land Commission Participation of Fr John Mary Cauchi Paraiba Brazil written by Fr John Caruana and published by Julio Cesar Tocacelli Colella. This book was released on with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practically since my first days in Brazil, on the advice of my colleagues, I became involved in the work of the social movements, both in the city and in the interior. Those in the city worked in favour of the workers, victims of precarious jobs and unemployment; those in the interior tried to bring about land reform. As these movements were cropping up when the military regime was approaching its end, within the Church, as a result of the Latin American Church’s Evangelical Option For The Poor’, the Pastoral Operaria (PO), and the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) were created. The Pastoral Operaria supported the small and various trade unions, while the CPT supported the social movements struggling for land reform. Both pastoral activities were supported by my Archbishop Mgr Jaime Luis Coelho. As the years and the decades passed by, I admired more and more the work of the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) in Brazil. Its branches could be found in the South, in São Paulo and Paraná, where I lived. Gradually, it spread to other parts of this continental country, including the North East in Alagoas, Pernambuco and Paraíba, where Fr John Mary Cauchi works. Fr Cauchi’s involvement was backed by his bishop, Mgr José Maria Pires. As a Maltese priest, I admired Fr John Mary’s work because it was more aggressive and dangerous as this small contribution will demonstrate. The book has two parts: in the first part I tried to give a better idea on what the pastoral and social work of the Church consists of. The second part delves into the work of Fr John Mary Cauchi.

Book Latin American Civilization

Download or read book Latin American Civilization written by Benjamin Keen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of Latin American Civilization is a compact update of a classic book of readings that teachers and students of Latin American history have used and appreciated since its first appearance in 1955. Returning to the single-volume format, this edition combines the best of the old collection with new material on recent developments in Latin American politics and society. Particular care has been taken to bring the chapters on the twentieth century up to date. Among the new selections are pieces on the Church’s role in the Nicaraguan revolution, the Malvinas/Falklands war, the struggle for democracy in Argentina and Brazil, and women’s liberation in Cuba. The great majority of selections are primary materials. These personal narratives—many translated by Dr. Keen for this collection—convey the flavor and spirit of a period more vividly than official documents and are generally better written. Secondary works are used only when suitable contemporary material was not available. The brief introductions and headnotes, which provide students with background information on the authors and subject matter, have been updated to reflect the best recent scholarship. This lively, entertaining, and informative book is an excellent companion for all texts on Latin American history, although its organization and outlook conform most closely to that of Keen and Wasserman’s Short History of Latin America.
